Exploring the 30-Meter Monument Amazone in Cotonou

The Monument Amazone stands 30 meters high on the Boulevard de la Marina in Cotonou, acting as a permanent visual tribute to the Agoodjie female warriors of the Dahomey Kingdom. Completed in 2022, this 150-ton bronze structure occupies a central position within the city's broader urban renewal project along the Atlantic coast. While many visitors view the statue from moving vehicles, its massive scale—roughly equivalent to a nine-story building—is only truly felt when standing at the base of the surrounding granite esplanade.

Historical Origins and Sculptural Design

President Patrice Talon inaugurated the site on July 30, 2022, a date chosen specifically to precede the country's 62nd Independence Day celebrations. The statue depicts a young warrior in traditional military dress, carrying a rifle and a machete, representing the "Mino" (our mothers) who defended the kingdom until the late 19th century. Chinese sculptor Li Xiangqun directed the artistic production, focusing on a battle-ready posture that conveys alertness and resilience.

Material Composition and Weight

The statue is a metal skeleton covered entirely in bronze plating, a combination that ensures durability against the salty air blowing from the nearby Gulf of Guinea. Engineers had to account for the immense 150-ton weight of the sculpture by installing deep reinforced concrete piles beneath the square. Looking closely at the feet of the warrior reveals the texture of the bronze, which has already begun to take on a slight patina from the coastal humidity.

Honoring the Agoodjie Legacy

This monument does not represent a specific historical figure like Queen Tassi Hangbe—a common misconception among first-time visitors—but rather an idealized archetype of the entire female military corps. These women transitioned from elephant hunters in the 1600s to elite infantry under King Gezo in the 1800s. Their influence remains a core part of Beninese identity, and the government intentionally placed the statue near the Presidency of the Republic to underscore their historical role as the ultimate protectors of the state.

Practical Visitor Information and Site Logistics

Access to the Esplanade des Amazones is free of charge, making it one of the most accessible major landmarks in West Africa. The site remains open 24 hours a day, though the presence of local families and security guards makes the environment feel most social between 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Visitors often combine a trip to the statue with a walk along the "Effet Graff" wall—a nearby stretch of graffiti art that currently holds the title for one of the longest murals in the world.

Best Times for Photography and Lighting

The statue faces roughly north-northeast, meaning the sun sets behind it from the perspective of the main boulevard. For the most detailed photographs without harsh shadows, visit before 9:00 AM or after 5:00 PM when the bronze takes on a warm, golden glow (the midday sun can make the metal appear quite dark and flat in digital images). If you visit at night, the site is illuminated by high-intensity spotlights that create a striking silhouette against the dark Cotonou sky.

Location and Accessibility

You will find the monument in the 12th arrondissement of Cotonou, situated between the Presidential Palace and the Atlantic Ocean. Taxis and "zemidjans" (motorcycle taxis) are the most efficient ways to reach the square, as the coastal road can be quite hot for walking. There is almost no natural shade on the paved esplanade—a detail most travel brochures fail to mention—so bringing an umbrella or wide-brimmed hat is a non-negotiable requirement for any visit lasting more than ten minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to enter the Monument Amazone area?

There is no entrance fee or ticket requirement to visit the monument or the surrounding esplanade. It is a public space open to everyone, though professional photography crews may occasionally need a permit for commercial shoots. Most casual visitors spend about 30 minutes at the site without spending any money.

Is the Monument Amazone the tallest statue in Africa?

No, it is currently the second tallest statue on the continent, standing at 30 meters. It is significantly shorter than the African Renaissance Monument in Dakar, Senegal, which reaches 52 meters. Despite this, it remains the most prominent modern bronze monument in the Gulf of Guinea region.

What is the best way to get to the monument from downtown Cotonou?

Taking a local motorcycle taxi is the fastest method, usually costing between 300 and 600 CFA francs depending on your starting point. You should tell the driver "Place de l'Amazone" or "Boulevard de la Marina" to ensure they take the scenic coastal route. If you are driving a car, there is ample street parking along the side roads adjacent to the Presidency.

Can I visit the monument at night?

The square remains open and well-lit until at least midnight, providing a much cooler environment than the daytime hours. Security personnel are always present on the esplanade, making it a safe spot for an evening stroll after dinner in the nearby Haie Vive neighborhood. The lighting setup is specifically designed to highlight the warrior's weapon and facial expression.

It’s a beautiful tourist attraction with a beehive of people and activities. The statue is HUGE!!! so much that taking a walk around it feels like exercise. Lol. It’s in the heart of the city, there’s a beach behind- Obama beach I think, and just central to everywhere. I love the significance of the statue which is giving credit to women for their contribution towards the building of modern day Benin.
