Santo Antão Logistics and High Altitude Trekking

Santo Antão sits at the northwestern edge of the Cape Verde archipelago, covering 779 square kilometers of volcanic terrain. Unlike its flatter neighbors, this island requires a ferry crossing from Mindelo as its only operational airport in Ponta do Sol closed years ago due to dangerous crosswinds. Visitors should expect a stark transition from the arid port of Porto Novo to the humid, green peaks of the north where the elevation reaches 1,979 meters at Topo de Coroa. This verticality defines the island economy and the daily rhythm of its 38,000 residents.

Maritime Transitions and Island Infrastructure

Ferry Logistics from São Vicente

Access to the island remains strictly maritime. Ferries depart from the Mindelo harbor on São Vicente twice daily, usually at 08:00 and 15:00, though schedules fluctuate based on the season and vessel maintenance. A one-way ticket costs approximately 800 CVE, which is roughly 8 US dollars. The crossing spans the Canal de São Vicente and takes about sixty minutes. Travelers frequently encounter heavy swells—the Atlantic current is unforgiving here—so taking motion sickness medication thirty minutes before boarding is a sensible move. Upon docking in Porto Novo, the heat is immediate and the terrain appears barren, a deceptive introduction to an island known for its tropical interior.

The Aluguer Public Transport System

Moving around the island relies on the aluguer, a network of shared Toyota Hiace vans or open-back pickup trucks. These vehicles do not follow a rigid clock; they depart when full. A collective ride from the Porto Novo ferry terminal to the northern hub of Ponta do Sol typically costs between 400 and 500 CVE. If you prefer not to wait for other passengers, you can hire the entire vehicle as a fret, which will cost upwards of 4,000 CVE. Drivers gather near the port exit, and while the scene looks chaotic, it is quite organized. It is standard practice to pay the driver at the end of the trip rather than the beginning.

High Altitude Geography and Agricultural Basins

The Cova de Paúl Descent

One of the most famous trekking routes begins at the Cova de Paúl, a volcanic crater situated at roughly 1,100 meters above sea level. The interior of the crater is flat and divided into neat agricultural plots where farmers grow corn and beans. The real challenge starts at the northern rim where the trail drops 1,000 meters into the Paúl Valley. This path consists of steep, zig-zagging stone cobbles built by hand. The descent takes roughly four to five hours and passes through coffee groves and banana plantations. Local farmers often sell fresh cheese or coffee from their doorsteps along the route. It is a punishing walk on the knees—trekking poles are highly recommended for anyone over the age of thirty.

Coastal Paths and Northern Fishing Villages

Moving toward the coast, the path from Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha represents one of the most technical segments of the island trail network. This route clings to the side of basalt cliffs and passes through the abandoned village of Aranhas. Unlike the lush interior valleys, this path is exposed to the salt spray and intense sun. The hike covers about 15 kilometers and takes seven hours of steady movement. Ponta do Sol itself serves as the best base for these excursions. It is a quiet town where the main activity is watching the local fishermen winch their wooden boats onto the ramp at sunset to protect them from the crashing surf.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to travel from Mindelo to Santo Antão?

A one-way ferry ticket costs 800 CVE for adults. You can purchase these at the maritime station in Mindelo or online through the CV Connect website. It is wise to buy tickets at least twenty-four hours in advance during the peak trekking season from November to March.

What is the highest point on the island and is it climbable?

Topo de Coroa is the highest peak at 1,979 meters above sea level. It is located in the more arid western part of the island and requires a guided trek due to the lack of clear trail markings and the extreme heat. The hike is significantly more demanding than the standard valley descents in the north.

Can I find ATMs and exchange currency in the mountain villages?

ATMs are widely available in Porto Novo, Ribeira Grande, and Ponta do Sol, but they are nonexistent in smaller mountain settlements like Cha de Igreja or Paúl. Most local shops and aluguer drivers only accept Cape Verdean Escudos in cash. You should withdraw enough currency at the port upon arrival to cover your entire stay in the interior.

Is the tap water safe for travelers to drink?

Tap water on the island is generally not recommended for direct consumption by visitors. While the spring water in the mountains is used by locals, travelers should stick to bottled water which is available in every village shop for about 100 CVE per 1.5-liter bottle. This prevents stomach upsets that could ruin a multi-day hiking itinerary.

We only had one week in Cabo Verde so we focused on San Vicente and Sao Antao, with a couple of hours in Praia awaiting a flight. We only spent two days in Sao Antao but it was definitely the highlight. Time only offered us two car tours around parts of the island but the vistas were spectacular. More time would beckon a full day hike from the upper peaks down to the ocean. If two or more days are available, consider driving in opposite directions each day, as the lighting offers very different perspectives to the landscape.
