Saqqara, located approximately 30 kilometers south of Cairo, served as the primary necropolis for Memphis, the ancient Egyptian capital. The site features the Pyramid of Djoser, constructed during the Third Dynasty, which is considered the earliest monumental stone building in history. Over the centuries, Saqqara expanded to include numerous pyramids, mastaba tombs, and temples, reflecting the evolution of Egyptian funerary architecture. The necropolis remained in use for over 3,000 years, with continuous additions and modifications, underscoring its enduring significance in ancient Egyptian culture. In 1979, UNESCO recognized Saqqara as part of the Pyramid Fields of Memphis World Heritage Site, acknowledging its historical and archaeological importance.

We are archeology buffs so seeing the original style of stepped pyramid was very interesting. It is in surprisingly good shape! Got there around 2pm and it was very hot, still worthwhile. Did it in combo with Pyramids at Giza and the Ramses Temple remains at Memphis. When in Egypt, every discovery is a revelation.

To see this first type of mega tomb built in Egypt was amazing, the shear size of it was unbelievable. The surrounding area with its temples and tombs was great. This area wasn't just dedicated to only the dead but was also a temple of worship.
