Climbing Mount Entoto: History and Adventure at 3200 Meters

Mount Entoto reaches a peak of 3,200 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in the immediate vicinity of Addis Ababa. This massive ridge serves as a geographical divide between the watersheds of the Blue Nile and the Awash River. Historically, the mountain functioned as the seat of the Ethiopian Empire before the capital moved to the lower plains in the late 1880s. Today, it combines spiritual heritage with the 1,300-hectare Entoto Natural Park, which opened in 2020 to provide a green lung for the city residents. Visitors should expect a significant temperature drop of roughly 8 to 10 degrees Celsius compared to the city center, necessitating a medium-weight jacket even on sunny afternoons.

The Historical Heartland of the Ethiopian Empire

Entoto Maryam Church and Royal Museum

In 1882, Emperor Menelik II commissioned the construction of Entoto Maryam, an octagonal church that remains a central pillar of Ethiopian Orthodox worship. The structure is built with chiseled stone and features vivid painted glass panels along its exterior walls. Inside the adjacent museum, travelers find a remarkably preserved collection of royal artifacts. These items include the ornate crowns worn by Menelik II and Empress Taitu, alongside ceremonial robes and the rifle used during the Battle of Adwa. One unusual piece is a large mirror gifted to the Empress by Queen Victoria. The museum charges a separate entry fee of 200 Birr for foreign visitors, which is handled at a small wooden booth near the church gates.

The First Palace of Addis Ababa

Before the founding of the modern city in the valley below, the imperial court resided in a modest palace complex on this high plateau. The buildings are constructed in a traditional style with thatched roofs and stone masonry, looking far more humble than the later grand structures of the city center. Walking through these ruins provides a grounded perspective on the early years of the Shewan kingdom. The stone floors remain cool even under the midday sun, and the thick walls were designed to trap heat against the mountain wind. Many visitors find the palace site less crowded than the church grounds, allowing for a quiet study of the 19th-century architecture.

Modern Recreation in Entoto Natural Park

High-Altitude Adventure and Sport

Since its inauguration in 2020, Entoto Natural Park has become the primary destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the capital. The park features a zipline that spans 300 meters, currently the longest in East Africa, and a dedicated go-karting track. Admission for foreign adults is approximately 1000 Birr, while children are charged 500 Birr. While the main entrance is grand, I suggest using Gate Dilber if your primary goal is the adventure sports area. This entrance puts you closer to the archery ranges and the stable where you can rent horses for 200 Birr per session. Professional athletes often use the 10 kilometers of paved trails for high-altitude training in the early morning hours.

Ecological Importance and the Eucalyptus Forest

Nearly 125 years ago, Menelik II imported eucalyptus trees from Australia to solve a chronic firewood shortage in the region. These trees now dominate the landscape and provide a distinct camphor-like scent that characterizes the mountain air. The forest acts as a massive carbon sink for the city, though it requires constant management to prevent soil erosion. Beyond the planted forest, indigenous juniper and olive trees still cling to the steeper slopes. Small coffee stalls are scattered throughout these wooded areas, serving traditional coffee brewed over charcoal. These stalls offer a much more authentic experience than the expensive floating restaurants found near the viewpoints.

Essential Logistics for a Smooth Visit

Transport and Navigation Strategies

Reaching the mountain from central Addis Ababa involves a 15-kilometer drive north. While ride-sharing apps like Ride and Feres work well within the city, drivers often decline requests for return trips from the mountain gates due to the fuel-intensive climb. A more reliable and cheaper method involves taking a blue-white minibus to Shiro Meda for 15 Birr, then transferring to a dedicated Entoto van for 35 Birr. If you prefer a private taxi, negotiate a round-trip rate of around 800 to 1000 Birr to ensure you have a ride back. The mountain roads are paved and in good condition, though the final 500 meters near the observatory can be rough after heavy rain.

Weather Preparation and Gear

The most stable weather occurs from October to February when the skies are clear and the trails remain dry. During the big rains from July to August, the mountain is often shrouded in thick mist, and thunderstorms can materialize within minutes. Sunscreen is essential at this altitude because the thin atmosphere offers less protection against UV rays even when the air feels chilly. Sturdy walking shoes are required if you plan to stray from the paved park paths onto the red-clay hiking trails. Keep a stash of small Birr notes for the various local guides and coffee vendors who rarely have change for large denominations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the current entrance fees for foreign visitors at Entoto Park?

Foreign adults are charged 1000 Birr for park entry, while the fee for foreign children is 500 Birr. These prices are significantly higher than resident rates and generally include access to the main viewpoints and walking trails but exclude specific activities like ziplining or the museum.

Can I visit the astronomical observatory at the summit?

The Entoto Observatory and Research Center is situated at the 3,200-meter peak and is managed by the Ethiopian Space Science Society. While it is primarily a research facility, pre-arranged tours are sometimes possible for groups, though general walk-in access is often restricted to the exterior grounds.

Is it safe to hike alone on the forest trails?

Solo hiking on the main paved paths of Entoto Natural Park is perfectly safe during daylight hours. However, those venturing onto the primitive dirt trails in the eucalyptus forest should return before 5 PM. Spotted hyenas are known to inhabit the deeper sections of the forest and become active as the sun sets.

Where is the best place to eat while visiting the mountain?

The upscale restaurants inside the park offer great views but high prices and average food quality. For a more local flavor, visit the stalls near Entoto Maryam Church for freshly roasted barley and jebena coffee, or stop at the Shiro Meda market at the base of the hill for traditional stews.

Really nice view of Addis Ababa and there are a few nice restaurants to visit at the lookout location/gate. Note that there are other locations/gates as well with different attractions but we did not visit them. Just a few pointers for anyone thinking of visiting 1. All responses to questions and other sources states that entrance is free when it is not. There is a 1000 Birr entrance fee per adult (Different lower price for locals) and they only accept Cash, no card facilities available. 2. There is no Wi-Fi at any of the restaurants or other shops so unless you have roaming which is charged at 2-5$ per MB make sure that your driver waits for you to take you down again. There is not a lot of taxi services waiting up there and you could be stuck for a while or forced to negotiate at a ridiculous rate. (Personal experience). 3. When arranging a taxi or any form of transport ensure that the vehicle is in proper condition as the road up and down the mountain is steep, you don’t want a brake failure when going down. (Personal experience). 4. Not all of the shops/restaurants have card facilities so I would ensure that I have some cash if you would like to keep your options open. Visiting the lookout location is still a worthwhile outing, but you are not going to spend hours there unless you are also planning on visiting one of the restaurants.

Awesome views of Addis Once you get over the hardship of the hike to the top, you can expect to see most of the city from the newly contracted view point. I was surprised to find a pedestrian and bicycle trails which are located about a hundred meters up hill from the view point

Place is awesome - a nice church and a very kind tour guide. We had a great time there but be aware - rather navigate to the church rather to the mountain top otherwise you will be stuck in the middle of nowhere.
