Hiking the Wli Agumatsa Waterfalls in Ghana

Wli Waterfalls, located approximately 20 kilometers from Hohoe in the Volta Region, stands as the tallest waterfall in West Africa with a combined vertical drop reaching 143 meters across its upper and lower tiers. International travelers typically pay between 60 and 90 GHS for entry—a rate that depends on whether you opt for the easy valley stroll or the strenuous mountain ascent. Unlike many seasonal cascades in the region, the Agumatsa River provides a perennial flow, ensuring the falls remain a spectacle even during the peak of the dry season from November to March.

Logistics and Wildlife in the Agumatsa Sanctuary

Entrance Fees and Practical Information

The visitor center in Wli village serves as the mandatory starting point for all excursions into the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary. As of early 2024, the entrance fee for non-Ghanaian adults is 60 GHS for the lower falls, while a guided trek to the upper falls increases the cost to roughly 90 GHS for the long route. These fees generally include the services of a local guide, who is essential for navigating the upper trails that lack clear markings. Most visitors find that carrying an extra 50 GHS in small denominations is useful for tipping or purchasing local crafts at the village entrance.

The Biodiversity of the Sanctuary

Walking through the sanctuary involves a flat, 45-minute trek that crosses the meandering Agumatsa stream nine times via a series of metal and concrete footbridges. This forest corridor supports an incredible density of life, including over 200 species of birds and 400 distinct species of butterflies—vibrant flashes of color that are most active in the humid mornings. Keep a sharp eye on the forest floor; columns of army ants frequently cross the path, and their bite is painful enough to warrant closed-toe shoes even on the easy trail. Along the sheer cliffs surrounding the lower falls, you will see thousands of straw-colored fruit bats clinging to the rock face, often taking flight in massive, swirling clouds if startled by loud noises.

Navigating the Upper and Lower Cascades

The Lower Falls Experience

The lower falls drop 80 meters into a shallow plunge pool surrounded by a cool, misty microclimate that provides instant relief from the Ghanaian heat. Because the path is predominantly flat and shaded by semi-deciduous forest, it is accessible to most fitness levels and takes about 90 minutes for a round trip. The base of the falls is a popular spot for swimming, though the water remains surprisingly chilly throughout the year. Most travelers linger here for about an hour—the mist is quite heavy, so keeping electronics in a dry bag is a practical necessity often overlooked by first-timers.

Conquering the Strenuous Upper Falls

For those seeking a more rugged challenge, the trail to the upper falls branches off the main path and involves a steep, three-hour scramble over roots and sharp rocks. This section of the hike requires a moderate to high level of fitness as the humidity clings heavily in the dense undergrowth, and the trail can become dangerously slick after a brief afternoon rain. Reaching the upper tier rewards you with a private, panoramic view of the Agumatsa mountain range and a second, more secluded plunge pool. The descent is often harder on the knees than the climb; I recommend using a walking stick, which your guide can usually fashion from a fallen branch near the trailhead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Wli Waterfalls?

May through October provides the most thunderous water volume due to the rainy season, though the trails become significantly muddier. If your priority is clear water for swimming and easier hiking conditions to the upper falls, visit during the dry months of November or December.

How much does it cost for a foreigner to visit?

Expect to pay 60 GHS for a basic ticket to the lower falls or up to 90 GHS if you choose the guided hike to the upper tier. Commercial photography or video filming requires a separate permit which currently costs approximately 300 GHS.

Can I reach the falls without a guide?

The tourism office requires all visitors to be accompanied by an authorized local guide to ensure safety and support the Wli community. These guides provide essential context on the Ewe culture and help identify rare bird species that are easily missed by the untrained eye.

How difficult is the hike to the Upper Wli Falls?

The trek is classified as strenuous because it involves steep elevation gains over a two-to-four-hour period in high humidity. Sturdy hiking boots are mandatory for this route to handle the slippery rocks and exposed tree roots that dominate the vertical sections.

Are there monkeys or other mammals in the sanctuary?

While the fruit bats are the most visible residents, the sanctuary also hosts small populations of Mona monkeys and baboons. These mammals are shy and usually remain deep in the forest canopy, making early morning visits the most likely time for a sighting.

Beautiful waterfall but the walk to get there is a bit treacherous. Extremely steep downgrade to navigate down the first level from parking area. It is paved with slate and stone which becomes slippery when wet. Getting to the waterfall is not for the faint of heart or anyone with severe mobility challenges. I enjoyed the experience seeing the waterfall but would only recommend for those who are in good shape.

Amazing waterfall. The lower water hike is more of a walk along a nice path that doesn't present any difficulties. It took us about 30 minutes to get to the water fall and another 30 minutes to go back. Because the walk is fairly easy you can actually take the time to look at the forest while walking and will see a lot of insects and bird. Site at the waterfall is very nice to spend some time and the falls are truly impressive. Youll need to pay a small fee to enter. Only downside is the littering... there is also the possibility to do the higher waterfall hike which takes about 5 or 6 hours. We didn't do it which allowed us to combine the lower waterfall hike and the Afadjato hike on the same day. If you don't have that much time in the area I would recommend doing that so that you can see a bit more of the region

Thee uncut GEM of Ghana! Our guide, James, took us to the upper and lower falls via the Togo loop. We would advise anyone going to ask for James. The views are surreal and the hike is difficult, but totally worth it. On the way up to the ridge, the path is well maintained and is quite steep. The ridge walk is good, but in a lot of places you’ll end up going through thick forest. The way down on the Togo path to upper falls, and the Ghana path to lower falls is really steep and narrow. Be prepared mentally and physically as it is very taxing. We are moderately good hikers. with stops at the falls, and lookout points it took us 7 hours. So my suggestion would be to start in the morning and go on a weekday - avoid weekends. Don’t rely on the estimates from the tourist office. Most of all enjoy the hike, but know that it’s not easy. Along the way you’ll get to taste some wild fruits, definitely ask your guide about them. Our recommendation is Wax Apple!
