Umbrella Rock sits on a high ridge within the Huhunya forest in Ghana's Eastern Region, offering a natural overhang that can shield up to 15 people from rain or sun. Located approximately 90 kilometers north of Accra, this geological formation is a primary highlight of the Boti Falls circuit and requires a moderate 30 to 45-minute uphill trek to reach. The rock consists of a massive slab of sandstone balanced on a significantly narrower base, creating a literal umbrella shape that has served as a landmark for local hunters and farmers for generations.
The rock formation is an erosion-carved sandstone structure that characterizes much of the Akwapim-Togo Range. Unlike smaller boulders in the area, the top ledge of Umbrella Rock extends several meters outward from its stem — providing enough surface area to cover a small tour group. While many guides claim the rock can cover 40 people, a more realistic estimate for comfortable standing room is between 12 and 15 adults. The underside of the overhang remains relatively cool even during the peak afternoon heat, making it a natural resting point for hikers before they attempt the final climb to the viewpoint.
Access to the rock usually begins at the Boti Falls visitor center, where the trail winds through cocoa farms and secondary forest. The path is often steep and can become quite slippery during the rainy season from May to August — a detail many visitors ignore until they are halfway up the ridge. Most of the trail is shaded by the forest canopy, but the humidity remains high throughout the year. You will find that the local guides move at a brisk pace, so do not hesitate to ask for a breather if the incline feels too taxing. The final stretch involves a slightly rocky scramble, but the reward is a clear vista over the surrounding Atewa Range and the dense greenery of the Yilo Krobo district.
Visiting Umbrella Rock is almost always bundled with the entrance fee for Boti Falls, which typically costs around 60 to 80 GHS for international tourists and 20 to 30 GHS for Ghanaian residents. These rates fluctuate based on regional tourism board updates, so carrying extra cash in small denominations is a practical necessity. A local guide is mandatory for the hike; they provide context on the local flora and ensure visitors do not stray into the surrounding agricultural lands. It is customary to tip your guide at the end of the circuit, especially if they assist with the climb up the wooden ladder to the top of the rock.
Just a short walk from the base of the Umbrella Rock trail lies a unique botanical anomaly known as the Three-Headed Palm Tree. This rare Phoenix reclinata specimen has three distinct trunks branching from a single base, which local legends suggest represents the unity of the surrounding villages. Most travelers visit this site, the rock, and the Twin Falls in a single three-hour loop. If you visit during the dry season, the falls may be reduced to a trickle, but the Umbrella Rock remains a consistent attraction regardless of the water level. I recommend arriving at the park gate by 9:00 AM to avoid the mid-day heat and the larger tour buses that usually arrive from Accra by noon.
The hike from the Boti Falls entrance to the rock takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on your fitness level. The trail covers about 1.5 kilometers of uphill terrain through forest and farm plots.
Yes, there is a sturdy wooden ladder placed against the side of the formation that allows visitors to stand on the flat upper surface. From this height, you have a panoramic view of the Eastern Region forest canopy.
The best time to visit is during the minor dry season from November to February when the trails are dry and easier to navigate. However, if you want to see the nearby Boti Falls at full capacity, the months of June to August are better despite the muddier hiking conditions.
Advance booking is not required as guides are stationed at the Boti Falls visitor center during daylight hours. You can simply arrive at the gate, pay the entrance fee, and a guide will be assigned to your group immediately.
There are no bathrooms or shops at the Umbrella Rock itself, so you must carry your own water and snacks from the main entrance. The visitor center at the bottom of the hill has basic amenities and a small canteen.
Duane Martin Somewhat difficult to find but worth the effort to find... Take the narrow dirt lane before the pin on Maps to the left of the main road when heading out of Koforidua. From the main road a couple hundred meters look for rocks on the hill to the left of the lane about 100 meters off the lane. There are some farmers fields in front of the rocks, you'll have to bushwhack a bit. The balanced rock may be hidden by foliage during rainy season. We had to search for it... But it is really something to see!
Abugri Isaac Richard and Kubas visit
Giuseppe Scigliano Once in your life, you have to visit it
Yaw Kuulboi A great piece of natural art with huge tourism potential. The place needs renovations as soon as possible
Nkansah Rexford Bigger and broader at the top than the Umbrella Rock at the Boti Falls. Enough space on top to even put up a 2 to 3 people camp tent. Now I'm curious if there are more of such umbrella rocks here in the Eastern Region.
