Navigating the 46-Meter Tower of Africa Monument in Bamako

The Tower of Africa serves as a major navigational beacon in Bamako, standing 46 meters tall at the center of the Place de l'Afrique. Situated in Commune VI, this structure is impossible to miss when traveling from the international airport toward the city center. It functions as both a geographic landmark and a symbolic representation of continental cooperation.

Architectural Identity and Regional History

The Vision of Alpha Oumar Konaré

Mali's former president, Alpha Oumar Konaré, commissioned the tower specifically for the 2001 OAU summit and the 2002 African Cup of Nations. As a historian and archaeologist, Konaré wanted a landmark that moved beyond colonial aesthetics to celebrate continental integration. He envisioned the monument as a physical representation of the African Union's birth. The construction finished just in time for the 2002 football tournament, a period when Bamako underwent significant infrastructure expansion.

Symbolism in the Concrete

The tower's design is heavily influenced by Sahelian motifs and specific West African historical symbols. At the base, which measures 22.10 meters in diameter, the structure evokes the shape of a baobab tree—often called the palaver tree where elders meet to solve community issues. You might notice the image of a pierced jar, a direct reference to King Guezo of Benin. This jar represents the idea that if every citizen puts a finger in the hole, the water of the nation will not leak out. The exterior walls are decorated with patterns reminiscent of Bogolan mud-cloth designs, grounding the modern concrete in traditional Malian art.

Planning Your Visit to the Monument

Navigation and Transport Practicalities

Getting to the tower usually involves a taxi ride from the city center, which costs between 2000 and 5000 CFA depending on your bargaining skills. The location is effectively an island in the middle of a high-traffic roundabout, so crossing on foot is a legitimate challenge. Local buses stop nearby for about 300 CFA, though they are often overcrowded. Once you reach the perimeter, look for a guide near the entrance gate; they typically facilitate access to the interior for a fee of 1000 CFA. The traffic here is notoriously thick in the evenings, so factor in extra time if you are heading back toward the northern bank of the river.

Views and Photography Advice

The top of the tower is 5.40 meters wide and offers an unobstructed view of the Niger River and the Bamako skyline. An elevator is available to reach the observation deck, but it is frequently out of service—be prepared to use the emergency staircase if you want the view. For photography, the late afternoon light around 5:00 PM provides the most clarity, as morning hours are often prone to dust-filled haze. Be discreet with professional camera gear because the proximity to government buildings means police presence is high. If you are lucky, you can see the International Modibo Keita Senou airport in the distance on a clear day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the official height and dimensions of the tower?

The Tower of Africa is 46 meters tall with a base diameter of 22.10 meters. The top section narrows to a diameter of 5.40 meters, giving it a tapered, conical appearance similar to traditional Sahelian architecture.

How much does it cost to enter the Tower of Africa?

The Tour of Africa made my day. It was the last edifice I visited that day but I do love it. The view is spectacular specially during the sunset. The guide was very professional. I take my time to get inside the Tour. I was able to appreciate history of African Union and Panafricanism, pictures of leaders and founders of the AU, presentation of African countries with their flag, arts. From the tour you will be able to appreciate a part of Bamako city. You can see the International Modibo Keita Senou airport, the second bridge, etc. There are many places you could visit when you are in Mali particularly in Bamako but I suggest you to visit the Tour of Africa once you have the chance. You will not regret it, don't miss it if you are interested about post-independance of African countries and the history of Africa Union.

One of the ancient towers of Bamako named La tour d'Afrique (The Africa's tower). it is a beautiful tower to look around at the middle of the round about but too busy in the evening time because of the traffic and local people selling different items along the road side. You need a ticket to enter the monument and it’s worth visiting while your trip to Bamako.

This is the most ancient tower of bamako named La tour d'Afrique (The Africa's tower). It is a blend of African-type elements in general and Malian in particular. This compilation is made by: - a baobab - a reservoir covered with ideograms (emblematic palaver tree under which the major decisions and resolutions of the city were taken) - two necklaces (to signify the party) - joined arms (for the uniqueness of the objective) - a pierced jar (that of King Guezo of Benin) - a sign bearing the image of Africa. (to signify the emergence of a strong and united Africa) The interior spaces of the Tower are accessible by an elevator and an emergency staircase. La Tour, véritable Tour de révolution est tronconique, haute de 46 m, de diamètre 22,10 m à la base et 5,40 m au sommet. It is the most busiest tower full of traffic in Evening time when people leave their work for home.
