Exploring the Granite Heights and History of Shere Hills

Shere Hills represents the highest point of the Jos Plateau, with its most prominent peak reaching approximately 1,829 meters above sea level. Located roughly 10 kilometers east of the Jos metropolitan area in Plateau State, this range of granite formations provides some of the most rigorous hiking terrain in north-central Nigeria. The area remains a primary training ground for the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre, an institution that has utilized these specific slopes for physical endurance programs since the late 1960s.

Navigation and Natural Features of the Jos Plateau

The Ascent to the Gog and Magog Twin Peaks

The most recognizable landmarks within the range are the twin peaks locally known as Gog and Magog. Reaching these summits requires navigating a series of narrow rock slits and massive boulders that demand physical agility. While the path starts with relatively gentle inclines over grassy plains, the final third of the climb involves crawling through tight granite passages and sliding across smooth stone faces. The north entrance near the Lamingo Dam tends to be significantly less crowded on weekends, providing a quieter start for those who prefer to avoid the large social hiking groups that gather near the main training center. Many visitors underestimate the thinness of the air at 6,000 feet, which often leads to exhaustion faster than expected for those traveling from coastal cities like Lagos.

Geology and Biological Diversity in the Granite Formations

These hills are part of the Younger Granite suite of the Jos-Bukuru ring complex, formed approximately 164 million years ago during the Jurassic period. The terrain is characterized by massive inselbergs and deep caves that historically provided refuge for the Afizere people during regional conflicts. Birdwatchers frequently visit the higher ridges to spot specialized species like the Rock-loving cisticola and the Gosling's bunting, which thrive in the rocky crevices. The high-altitude environment creates a distinct microclimate where morning temperatures frequently hover around 18 degrees Celsius, contrasting sharply with the tropical heat found in the surrounding lowlands. I have found that the morning visibility from the summits is best before 8:00 AM, as the harmattan haze often settles in later in the day during the dry months.

Practical Planning and Historical Significance

Legacy of the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre

The Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre, often referred to as the Mountain School, moved its operations to Shere Hills in 1968 after relocating from Kura Falls. This institution was modeled after the Outward Bound system and has trained over seven million Nigerians in leadership and survival skills. The base of the hills still contains training facilities established in 1965, and the presence of the Man O' War organization ensures a level of security and order that is often lacking at other remote Nigerian landmarks. Walking through the camp provides a look at the mid-century architecture that served as the first site for the National Youth Service Corps orientation programs in 1973. Visitors should plan to pay a nominal maintenance or entrance fee of approximately 500 to 1,000 NGN if they intend to use the facilities or park within the training center grounds.

Seasonal Weather Realities for Hikers

The dry season between November and March represents the most reliable window for a successful trek. During these months, the granite surfaces are dry and provide much better traction for boots than during the slippery rainy season from May to September. Early mornings in January are particularly cold, with temperatures sometimes dipping to 15 degrees Celsius on the plateau. It is essential to hire a local guide from the nearby Shere village, as the lack of marked trails and the complexity of the rock formations make it easy to become disoriented. Guides typically do not have a fixed rate, but offering 2,000 to 3,000 NGN is considered a fair and respectful gesture for a half-day excursion. Most official travel brochures omit the fact that the harmattan wind can be quite fierce on the exposed ridges, making a windproof jacket just as vital as sturdy footwear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the highest elevation at Shere Hills?

The peak reaches 1,829 meters (6,001 feet) above sea level, making it the tallest feature on the Jos Plateau. This elevation significantly moderates the local climate compared to Nigeria's lower regions.

How much does it cost to enter Shere Hills?

There is no official standardized ticket for the general hills, but the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre often collects a nominal maintenance fee of 500 to 1,000 NGN. Some hikers choose to pay local guides a similar amount for route navigation.

When is the best time for mountain climbing?

The dry season between November and March offers the most stable conditions with minimal rainfall and clearer skies. Early morning temperatures during the harmattan can drop to 15 degrees Celsius, so layered clothing is necessary.

Are there dangerous animals in the hills?

While baboons were historically common in the granite caves, human activity and quarrying have driven most large mammals away. Visitors are more likely to encounter specialized bird species like the Rock-loving cisticola or domestic livestock from nearby villages.
