Guide to Visiting Sanda Kyarimi Park in Maiduguri

Sanda Kyarimi Park occupies approximately 42 acres of land in the heart of Maiduguri, Borno State, serving as the primary wildlife sanctuary in northeastern Nigeria since its establishment in 1970. The facility functions as both a botanical garden and a zoo, hosting species like lions, elephants, and crocodiles within its perimeter. While regional security concerns have fluctuated over the last decade, the park remains a central recreational hub for local residents and researchers interested in Sahelian fauna.

Wildlife Diversity and Conservation Efforts

Mammal Exhibits and Predator Enclosures

The lion enclosure remains the most popular destination within the 17-hectare grounds. These big cats are often visible during the early morning hours before the intense Maiduguri sun prompts them to retreat into shaded shelters. Visitors should observe the spotted hyenas and striped hyenas, which are native to the surrounding Savanna regions and rarely seen in the wild by casual travelers. The park also maintains a small population of elephants, though their enclosure requires significant maintenance to ensure proper habitat standards. Many visitors overlook the primate section, but the monkeys provide quite a bit of entertainment if you catch them during their morning activity.

Reptiles and Avian Species

A dedicated section of the park houses Nile crocodiles, some of which have resided in the facility for decades. The reptile pits are constructed with concrete walls and viewing platforms that allow for a clear view of the animals basking in the sun.

Bird enthusiasts will find a variety of local species, including the common ostrich and several types of vultures. These birds are particularly vocal during the harmattan season between November and January when the air is cooler and drier. Observation is best done from the shaded walkways to avoid the direct glare of the sun reflecting off the sandy enclosures.

Logistics and Visitor Experience

Timing and Climate Considerations

Planning a visit requires careful attention to the local climateโ€”as temperatures in Maiduguri frequently exceed 40 degrees Celsius during the peak of the dry season in April and May. The best window for exploration is between 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM when animals are most active and the heat is manageable. If you arrive later in the day, the thick canopy of older neem trees provides some relief, though many animals will be sleeping in hidden areas. Afternoon visits are generally more crowded with local families, making the morning hours preferable for those seeking a quieter experience.

Entry Fees and Accessibility

Access to the park is generally affordable, with ticket prices for adults currently set around 200 Naira, though rates for children and students are lower. These fees are subject to change based on state government regulations, so verifying the current price at the gate is advisable. The entrance is located along Shehu Laminu Way, a major artery in the city that makes the park accessible by local taxis or tricycles. Visitors should note that there are limited food vendors inside, so carrying bottled water is essential for staying hydrated during the trek across the grounds. There is a small parking area near the gate, but it fills up quickly on Sunday afternoons. Security personnel are usually present at the entrance to manage the flow of people and ensure safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the official opening hours for the park?

The park is typically open to the public from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily, including weekends and public holidays. Visitors should arrive at least two hours before closing to ensure enough time to walk the circular path through the main animal exhibits.

Which animals are the primary attraction at Sanda Kyarimi Park?

Lions and elephants are the major draws, alongside a diverse collection of crocodiles and hyenas. The park serves as a rare opportunity to see these species within the Borno State region without traveling to more distant national parks.

Is photography allowed inside the zoo grounds?

General photography for personal use is permitted, though professional filming often requires a separate permit from the Borno State Ministry of Home Affairs and Information. It is often easier to capture clear photos of the ostriches and primates than the big cats due to the cage configurations.

Awesome park, it was a thrill to see the many animals โ€”some, my firstโ€” the zoo keeps. I'm not a medic or vet though, but I think the baboons need some medical attention. Also, that elephant needs the company of other elephants, please! Even if just one other.๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ Thumbs up though, you should definitely visit. PS: Under the shade of the trees, don't look up! ๐Ÿฆ‡

A beautiful place with a serene environment located in one of the most popular areas in the heart of Maiduguri the Borno state capital. There are a lot of planted trees there which cool the area in hot weather conditions. It's a place to take your family for a picnic and spend some time together. There are various species of wild and domestic animals which include: Ostrich; red monkeys; Baboo; tortoises; Lions; Elephant; Crocodiles; Hyenas; Pythons; Muturu cattle; Hedhogs; Cape Eland; Geese; Sheep; Goats; Horse's; and Camel among others. There is also a mini Childrenโ€™s amusement park for playing kids. There are also canteens for food and drinks. In conclusion, I recommend this place for any visitors to Maiduguri to visit before leaving.๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ˜
