Panoramic Views and Wildlife at Naval Hill Bloemfontein

Naval Hill sits at an elevation of approximately 1,480 meters, providing a 360-degree view over Bloemfontein and the surrounding Free State plains. This hilltop destination serves as a rare urban nature reserve, spanning roughly 250 hectares and housing free-roaming wildlife like springbuck and giraffes. Visitors often arrive for the sunsets, but the park offers much more than just a photography spot. Access is generally straightforward via Union Avenue, though the winding road requires caution during the early morning mist common in this part of South Africa.

Exploring the Franklin Game Reserve and Wildlife

Occupying the plateau of the hill, Franklin Game Reserve acts as a sanctuary for diverse African fauna within the city limits. You will find roughly 200 animals within these fences, including eland, blesbok, and zebras. Unlike the massive national parks located hours away, the compact nature of this 250-hectare space makes animal sightings almost guaranteed within a short drive. I suggest driving slowly along the loop road rather than rushing directly to the monument plaza, as giraffes often graze surprisingly close to the asphalt near the southern thickets.

Local joggers and walkers often favor the hill for its steep incline and high-altitude training environment. While the main roads are paved, several dirt paths crisscross the plateau for those who prefer a more rugged experience. If you decide to explore on foot, stay on the marked tracks to avoid disturbing the shy springbuck herds that congregate near the center of the reserve. The wind can pick up suddenly at this height, so carrying a light windbreaker is a smart move even if the city streets below feel warm and still.

Historical Landmarks and Cultural Icons

Standing tall on the northern edge of the hill is the eight meter bronze statue of Nelson Mandela, which was unveiled in late 2012. It depicts Madiba with an outstretched hand, overlooking the city where the African National Congress was founded in 1912. The scale of the monument is impressive, and the surrounding paved plaza provides one of the best vantage points for observing the city grid. Most tourists crowd this area during the golden hour, so arriving before 09:00 allows for cleaner photos without the constant presence of large tour groups.

On the eastern slopes, a massive white horse made of painted stones marks a historical footnote from the Anglo-Boer War. British soldiers from the Wiltshire Regiment created the figure in the early 1900s as a landmark for returning scouts and a reminder of their home. It remains a stark white contrast against the green and brown vegetation of the hillside. Many visitors miss this feature if they only focus on the Mandela statue, but it is easily visible from the plains below or the eastern perimeter fence near the reservoir. Don't expect a manicured monument; it is a rustic arrangement of rocks that requires regular repainting by local volunteers to remain visible.

Modern Science at the Naval Hill Planetarium

The Lamont-Hussey Observatory was established on the hill in 1928 for double-star research, but today the building houses the Naval Hill Planetarium. This facility is the first digital planetarium in sub-Saharan Africa, utilizing advanced projection technology to display the southern hemisphere sky on a 12-meter dome. The transition from a 1920s research station to a modern educational hub adds a layer of intellectual depth to an otherwise nature-focused outing.

Public shows are not held every hour, so you must check the University of the Free State website or their social media pages for the current weekend schedule. Tickets usually need to be booked in advance or purchased at the door if space allows, though morning shows often fill up with school groups. If you visit during a public screening, try to sit toward the back of the dome for the best viewing angle of the celestial projections. The interior temperature is climate-controlled, making it a perfect escape during the peak afternoon heat of a Free State summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a fee to enter Naval Hill or Franklin Game Reserve?

Entry to the hill and the game reserve is free for all visitors and vehicles. However, the Naval Hill Planetarium charges separate admission fees for its scheduled shows, which usually range from 30 to 50 Rand depending on the age of the visitor.

What are the opening and closing hours for the reserve?

The gates generally open at 07:00 and close at 18:00 daily throughout the year. It is wise to start heading toward the exit by 17:45 because the security staff is quite strict about clearing the plateau before the sun goes down completely.

Can I see giraffes at Naval Hill?

Yes, a small population of giraffes lives permanently within the 250-hectare Franklin Game Reserve. They are most active during the early morning or late afternoon when they move toward the acacia trees near the perimeter fences to feed.

Is it safe to walk alone on the hill?

While the hill is popular with local runners, it is always safer to walk in pairs or groups, especially on the less-traveled dirt paths. Stick to the main paved loop if you are visiting for the first time or if the weather looks unpredictable.

Always enjoy coming here for a sunset drive. The reserve was previously very well maintained but recently it has been looking like it needs some cleaning up. Overall, it’s a great place to come and observe animals (zebras, giraffes and wildebeest). It’s also very popular with runners!
