Practical Guide to South Africa’s Lion and Safari Park

Lion and Safari Park occupies 600 hectares of prime bushveld near the Cradle of Humankind, positioned exactly 13 kilometers from Lanseria International Airport. The facility houses over 80 lions, including rare white lions, alongside cheetahs, hyenas, and African wild dogs within secured enclosures. Most visitors spend three to four hours here, though a full day is easily filled if you include the various guided specialized tours. Entry for a standard self-drive safari costs approximately R250 per adult, while guided options vary based on the duration and vehicle type.

Planning Your Wildlife Experience in Broederstroom

Choosing Between Self-Drive and Guided Safari Tours

Adults paying the R250 self-drive fee enter the park in their own vehicles, following a set route through various carnivore camps. While this provides autonomy, the guided tours — priced at R550 for a 1.5-hour experience — utilize open-top safari vehicles that offer better height for photography. Drivers must keep windows closed at all times in the predator zones; failing to do so results in immediate removal by park rangers (safety patrols monitor these areas constantly). If you choose the guided option, the rangers provide live commentary on animal behavior and social hierarchies that you would otherwise miss while focusing on the road. The morning slots at 9:00 AM often yield the best sightings before the midday heat prompts the lions to sleep under heavy cover.

Timing Your Visit for Lion Feeding Sessions

Sunday afternoons at 12:00 PM represent the busiest period because of the public lion feeding sessions. If you prefer a quieter environment, arrive on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning when the park opens at 8:00 AM. Predator activity typically peaks during the cooler morning hours or late afternoon before the gates close at 6:00 PM. A detail most visitors overlook is that the park remains open on all public holidays, which can significantly increase crowd sizes and wait times at the main gates. Arriving right at opening allows you to complete the predator camps before the tourist buses from Johannesburg arrive around 10:30 AM.

Species Conservation and Animal Encounters

Identifying the Rare White Lions and Wild Dogs

The park is one of the few places in Gauteng where visitors can observe the genetic mutation of white lions in a semi-wild setting. These are not albinos but a rare color morph of the Southern African lion. In a separate enclosure, the African wild dog — one of the continent's most endangered carnivores — can be seen. These pack hunters are exceptionally active during the winter months from June to August. Seeing them in a 600-hectare reserve is a practical alternative to the vast Kruger National Park where spotting a pack is largely a matter of luck. The hyena camps also offer a look at both spotted and brown hyenas, species that are frequently misunderstood in popular culture.

Cheetah Walks and Giraffe Feeding Logistics

Beyond the big cats, the herbivore area allows for a different pace where you can purchase a bucket of feed for R50 to interact with giraffes. This section is accessible without a guide and provides a tactile experience that contrasts with the strict vehicle-only rules of the predator camps. For those seeking more engagement, the park offers cheetah walks for visitors over 1.5 meters tall. These sessions are limited to small groups and require advance booking through the official website. Unlike the now-discontinued lion cub petting, these walks emphasize the animal’s natural movement across the veld while maintaining strict safety protocols. Additionally, the on-site Bull 'n Bush restaurant provides a viewing deck where you can watch zebras and antelopes grazing while you eat, a view that is particularly striking at sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the closest airport to the park?

Lanseria International Airport is the primary hub for the park, located just 13 kilometers or a 15-minute drive away. This makes the park a viable destination for travelers with a four-hour layover in Johannesburg.

Does the park still allow lion cub petting?

Lion and Safari Park discontinued cub petting several years ago to align with modern ethical wildlife tourism standards. Visitors can instead participate in guided walks with cheetahs or feed giraffes in the herbivore section.

Is a 4x4 vehicle required for the self-drive safari?

A standard sedan is perfectly sufficient for the 600-hectare property because the internal roads are well-maintained gravel. You do not need high clearance, though you must stay on the designated paths at all times.

What are the feeding times for the lions?

Public lion feeding usually takes place on Sundays and public holidays at 12:00 PM. Arriving at least 45 minutes early is recommended to secure a good viewing spot near the enclosure fences.

Are there any age restrictions for the activities?

While the self-drive and guided safaris are open to all ages, the cheetah walk requires participants to be at least 1.5 meters tall for safety reasons. Children under the age of 12 often receive discounted rates on the standard tour packages.

Beautiful day spent here. The guided tour was amazing. Got some beautiful videos and photos. Would highly recommend. Even better if you go in a group. Waiting time was really minimal. Got in free for a 1hr safari for my birthday (has to be on the exact date) 😁

I recently went horse riding at the Lion and Safari Park, and it was an unforgettable experience! The park's picturesque landscape, with its rolling hills and stunning views, provided the perfect backdrop for a serene and enjoyable ride. The horses were well-trained and gentle, making the ride comfortable even for beginners. Our guide, Lawrence, was absolutely phenomenal. His enthusiasm and passion for nature were evident in every story he shared. Lawrence taught us things we never knew about the park's ecosystem and its inhabitants, making the ride not only enjoyable but also highly educational. His knowledge and love for the animals were truly inspiring, and his engaging manner made the entire experience even more special. Riding through the park allowed for a unique perspective on the animals in their natural habitat, adding an adventurous twist to the typical safari experience. I especially loved the feeling of being so close to nature, with the chance to see some incredible wildlife up close. Overall, the horse riding experience at the Lion and Safari Park was well-organized, safe, and immensely enjoyable. Thanks to Lawrence, it was also educational and deeply enriching. We would definitely book to go there again, and we highly recommend this activity to anyone looking to explore the park in a more intimate and adventurous way. Highly recommended!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We checked in online and found the place easily. We loved the fact that we could drive around the enclosures as many times as we liked. We opted for a self drive which gave us an opportunity to really get up close to the lions. We also stayed to watch a feeding in one of the enclosures. We went all the way to the wild dogs enclosures but did not see much because they were napping. We took a walk around the reception area and had ice cream from the curing shop. We exited through the 5 domes and did a bit of shopping. I recommend this place for family outings, it's exciting

Absolutely amazing experience, coming as a tourist - this was such a great tour. You can self-drive through the park with different lion species 🦁 and you get to see other animals too, like giraffes 🦒 and wild dogs. You can also look at how they feed the lions - it was so interesting to see how the males choose which piece of meat they want to eat. At the end of the tour you can also buy souvenirs. Couldn't recommend more. 🦁
