Bloukrans Bridge Bungy: Navigating Africa's Highest Jump

The Bloukrans Bridge Bungy provides a 216-meter freefall from the highest commercial bridge bungy site in the world. Located on the N2 highway along South Africa's Garden Route, the operation utilizes a specialized pendulum-swing system to ensure a smooth transition from vertical drop to recovery. Drivers reaching the border of the Western and Eastern Cape provinces will find the bridge approximately 40 kilometers east of Plettenberg Bay. While the concrete arch structure was completed in 1983 to streamline travel across the deep river gorge, it gained global fame in 1997 when commercial jumping operations officially began.

Most visitors overestimate the difficulty of the physical jump while underestimating the psychological impact of the walk out to the platform. The suspended metal walkway (or Skywalk) is bolted to the underside of the road deck, featuring a mesh floor that allows a direct view of the valley floor 700 feet below. This transition period often serves as the ultimate test of nerves before reaching the central jumping pod.

Bridge Architecture and Historical Records

The Bloukrans Bridge is an architectural marvel of the late 20th century, standing as the largest single-span concrete arch bridge in Africa. It stretches 451 meters in total length with a central arch spanning 272 meters across the gorge. When construction finished in June 1983, the bridge was recognized as the highest concrete arch bridge in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, it remains a critical link in the N2 national road (a route that also includes the high-altitude Storms River and Van Stadens bridges) significantly reducing travel time through the Tsitsikamma region. The sheer scale of the concrete supports is best appreciated from the viewing decks at the Khoisan Village nearby, where the bridge appears to hang almost weightlessly between the rocky cliffs.

Pendulum Technology and Safety Protocols

Unlike traditional bungy jumps that rely on a purely vertical rebound, the Bloukrans operation uses a pendulum system to manage the forces of the 216-meter drop. This technical setup involves a long cord that creates a wide, sweeping arc at the bottom of the fall, which significantly reduces the jarring snap commonly associated with shorter jumps. Face Adrenalin, the primary operator, maintains a safety record spanning over 25 years and over a million recorded jumps. Each cord is retired after a specific number of uses (often around 100 jumps) to maintain elasticity and structural integrity. After the initial bounce and swing, a recovery operator winches the jumper back up to the bridge deck in an upright position — a relief for many who find hanging upside down for extended periods uncomfortable.

Practical Logistics for Visitors

Age and Weight Requirements for Jumpers

Safety regulations at the bridge are strictly enforced through several mandatory weight and age checks. Potential jumpers must be at least 14 years old to participate in the full bungy experience, though younger children can sometimes participate in the Skywalk tours depending on current safety briefings. Weight limits are equally rigid, requiring a minimum of 35 kilograms and a maximum of 150 kilograms. It is standard practice for staff to weigh participants twice (once at the booking office and once at the bridge entry) to ensure the equipment is calibrated correctly for the individual's mass. Dress codes are largely informal, though closed-toed shoes are highly recommended and skirts are prohibited due to the requirements of the full-body harness systems.

Non-Jumping Options: Skywalk and the Hangout Zone

For those who prefer to keep their feet on the structure, the Skywalk Tour offers a way to experience the height of the gorge without the freefall. These tours typically cost around 500 ZAR, a substantial saving compared to the approximately 1,690 ZAR required for the full jump and winch package. The Skywalk includes a guided history of the bridge's construction and access to the Hangout Zone. In this specific area, participants are tethered to safety lines, allowing them to lean over the edge of the bridge to watch friends or family members leap into the abyss. The view from the center of the arch is arguably the best in the Tsitsikamma area, offering a perspective of the Bloukrans River mouth as it meets the Indian Ocean that is impossible to see from the road level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Bloukrans Bridge bungy jump cost?

As of 2024 and 2025, the standard price for a single bungy jump is approximately 1,600 to 1,690 ZAR per person. This fee usually includes the zipline out to the bridge, the jump itself, a winch recovery back to the arch, and a commemorative certificate. Digital photos and high-definition video footage of the jump are sold separately at the onsite media center.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my jump?

Operations at Bloukrans continue in most weather conditions, including moderate rain and fog, which can actually add a unique atmosphere to the experience. However, the site will temporarily close or postpone jumps during electrical thunderstorms or periods of gale-force winds exceeding safe operational limits. If a jump is canceled due to these safety concerns, the operators typically offer a voucher for a future date or a refund.

Can I go as a spectator without paying the full jump fee?

Spectators who wish to walk out onto the bridge with their jumping friends must purchase a Skywalk or spectator pass, which usually costs around 500 ZAR. If you prefer to stay on solid ground, the Cliffhanger Restaurant provides a free viewing area where you can watch live video feeds of the jumping platform on large screens while eating. This restaurant is located at the Khoisan Village side of the gorge and offers the best terrestrial view of the arch.

How long should I plan to spend at the bridge site?

You should allow at least two to three hours for the entire process from check-in to completion. While the jump itself lasts only minutes, the safety briefing, harnessing, and the queue for the zipline access can take considerable time, especially during the peak December to January holiday season. Arriving at least 60 minutes before your scheduled booking time is a mandatory requirement to ensure all weight checks and indemnity forms are processed.

The most exhilarating activity. The staff was helpful, very active and made the environment lively with their energetic spirit. Jumping was made more doable because they hype you up. The jump itself is scary but worth it when at the bottom. You will thank yourself for actually going through with it. If you can do this you can do anything. Post jump drinks are a plus too 😉
