Spier Wine Farm Travel Guide: Stellenbosch Art and Heritage

Spier Wine Farm began its history in 1692, making it one of the foundational agricultural estates in the Stellenbosch region. Located approximately 45 minutes from Cape Town by car, this 620-hectare property operates as a multi-faceted destination combining organic viticulture, wildlife conservation, and contemporary art. Unlike many traditional wine estates that focus solely on the cellar door experience, the grounds here serve as a public space where visitors interact with large-scale outdoor sculptures and restored Cape Dutch architecture without necessarily booking a formal tour.

Historic Architecture and the Contemporary Art Trail

Exploring the 21 Gables and 1692 Legacy

Walking through the central werf (farmyard) reveals 21 historic Cape Dutch gables, the highest concentration found on any single farm in South Africa. These architectural features date primarily between 1767 and 1822, adorning the manor house, the old cellar, and various outbuildings. The oldest dated wine cellar in the country remains a focal point of the estate, serving as a physical link to the early days of the Dutch East India Company’s influence in the Cape. Most visitors stick to the main paths, but walking toward the rear of the manor house offers a better perspective of the original layout and the massive oak trees, some of which were planted as far back as 1682.

Interacting with the Spier Contemporary Art Collection

The farm functions as a living gallery, housing over 1,000 pieces of contemporary South African art from the Spier Art Collection. One of the more interactive installations is the Singing Stones, created by artist Jenna Burchell. These 12 sculptures use sensors to emit sounds when people approach or touch them, creating a sensory experience that contrasts with the silent, stationary nature of traditional statues. The Mosaic Kraal is another permanent feature, showcasing intricate work from 16 different artists. I suggest starting at the Mosaic Kraal near the parking area to set the tone for the rest of the walk, as it highlights the scale of the estate's investment in local craftsmanship.

Sustainable Viticulture and Wine Tasting Experiences

The Tasting Room and Bottle Chandelier

Inside the tasting room, a massive chandelier designed by Heath Nash hangs above the main counter. It weighs 370kg and consists of 334 recycled Spier wine bottles, serving as a reminder of the farm’s focus on circular waste management. Standard wine tastings generally start at R50 per person, while specialized pairings like the chocolate and wine flight cost approximately R70. The room tends to fill up with tour groups between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Arriving before 11:00 AM allows for a more focused conversation with the wine educators, who can explain the nuances of the 21 Gables Chenin Blanc or the Creative Block blends.

Eco-Friendly Farming and the Eco-Circle

Sustainability at this estate goes beyond marketing, as evidenced by the Eco-Circle wastewater treatment plant. This system recycles 100% of the farm’s black and grey water through a series of natural processes involving anaerobic and aerobic reactors followed by a reed bed. This recycled water is then used to irrigate the sprawling gardens and lawns. On the agricultural side, Farmer Angus leads the regenerative farming efforts, managing free-roaming chickens that move across the pastures in mobile houses. These birds contribute to soil health by providing natural fertilization, a detail you can observe firsthand while walking the 5km or 10km trail routes that wind through the vineyards.

Wildlife Conservation and Family Activities

Eagle Encounters Rehabilitation Center

Located on land donated by the farm, Eagle Encounters has operated as a non-profit bird of prey rehabilitation and conservation center since 2001. The facility focuses on rescuing injured or orphaned raptors and releasing them back into the wild whenever possible. Entry fees are roughly R110 for adults and R75 for children, though these prices are subject to change and should be verified on their official site. The interactive flying shows, held daily at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, are the most informative part of the visit. Seeing a Secretarybird or a Black Eagle in flight at close range provides a practical understanding of their role in the local ecosystem that a museum display cannot replicate.

Vineyard Segway Tours and Farm Picnics

Segway tours offer a faster way to navigate the 620 hectares of terrain, with options for 1-hour or 2-hour glides through the vineyards. These tours provide views of the Helderberg mountains that are often missed if you remain near the tasting room. For those who prefer a slower pace, the picnic experience is a staple of the estate. You can collect a pre-ordered basket from the farm cafe and find a spot along the Eerste River. It is a local secret that the area near the old Slave Bell is much quieter for a picnic than the main lawns near the hotel. If you are dining at Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery instead, be sure to grab their sourdough or pasteis de nata early, as the bakery items frequently sell out by mid-afternoon on weekends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the entrance fee for Spier Wine Farm?

There is no general entrance fee to enter the farm grounds, walk the art trails, or explore the historic buildings. You only pay for specific activities like wine tasting (starting from R50), Segway tours, or entry to the Eagle Encounters rehabilitation center, which is approximately R110 for adults.

Are dogs allowed at Spier Wine Farm?

Leashed dogs are permitted on the farm's outdoor walking trails and in specific open areas of the werf. However, pets are generally restricted from entering the tasting room, the hotel, and the Eagle Encounters area for the safety of the wildlife and other guests.

When is the best time of year to visit the estate?

February and March are the peak harvest months when you can see the vineyards in full production and experience the heat of the Cape summer. Alternatively, the winter months from June to August are known as the secret season, offering a quieter atmosphere with fireside wine tastings and lower accommodation rates at the 80-room hotel.

How far is Spier Wine Farm from Cape Town?

The drive from Cape Town city center takes approximately 45 minutes via the N2 highway, depending on traffic. It is situated on the R310 (Baden Powell Drive), making it one of the most accessible wine estates in Stellenbosch for those traveling from the city or the airport.

What makes Spier's wine farming unique?

The estate is one of the few in the region to implement 100% wastewater recycling and high-density grazing through regenerative farming practices. Their chickens produce roughly 4,000 eggs a day while naturally fertilizing the pastures, reducing the need for synthetic chemicals across their 620 hectares of land.

So myself and a friend went to the light show. The art itself was beautiful, but we definitely felt there was a bit of a disconnect between the art pieces. We did get a little lost trying to find our way to the main point of where to start.

A beautiful wine estate! We had a great wine tasting experience and thoroughly enjoyed the ambience that has been created. It is a high-quality venue that offers lots of options aside from the wine tasting. Very attentive and friendly staff! We did the Spier Tasting, which had a good variety of wines to personalise the tasting. For our particular taste, some of the whites were a bit too soft and easy drinking, but it's all about experiencing and learning! The charcuterie board was also high quailty and delicious!

Spier is so much more than a wine farm. It is definitely one of the most special places to visit around Stellenbosch. The gardens are truly magnificent, with great old oak trees, wine tasting, restaurants and many beautiful picnic spots. They are also great supporters of art, and a wide range of contemporary art is on display. The free entry annual Light Art Festival is currently on until the 21st of April, and such a wonderful experience for the whole family.

We tried Spier because of the tons of negative reviews on the “famous” wineries and was an amazing experience! Thanks we found them. We had great time here and you can spend your full day with family and kids. You will find friendly and receptive staff, entrance control and parking, amazing food and good price. Good wine and bakery. Toilets are very clean and the property has also many art pieces and exhibitions.
