Welgevonden Game Reserve, nestled in South Africa's Limpopo Province, embodies the raw beauty of the African wilderness. Covering 38,200 hectares and part of the UNESCO-recognized Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, this sanctuary offers a stunning array of landscapes, from rugged mountains and deep valleys to flat-topped plateaus. The reserve's varied altitudes, ranging from 1,080 to 1,800 meters, create a diverse mosaic of ecosystems, enhancing its natural allure.
Home to over 50 mammal species, Welgevonden is renowned for its thriving populations of the Big Five—lion, elephant, white rhino, buffalo, and leopard. Notably, it boasts one of Africa's largest populations of white rhinos, highlighting its pivotal role in their conservation. The reserve also supports a rich variety of antelope, from the majestic eland to the elusive duiker, and predators like cheetahs that roam its plains. Night safaris reveal the park's nocturnal inhabitants, including the rare brown hyena and pangolin. Bird enthusiasts will find a haven in Welgevonden, with over 300 recorded species and notable breeding grounds for the rare blue crane.
What a privilege to visit this remarkable and magical place! The information and personal stories that learnt about every single animal living here not only enhanced my knowledge, but it was also a privilege to share the love and incredible respect for these animals that the collaborators hold. The amount of passion for the work they do here, is rare to find. Thank you for hosting me for two hours. They have enriched my life.
