About Bel Ombre Nature Reserve
Located in the heart of the Domaine de Bel Ombre, a 2,500 hectare natural estate in the south of Mauritius, Bel Ombre Nature Reserve is a place shaped by nature. Covering 1,300 hectares of preserved landscapes, the reserve is home to a rich biodiversity, offering outdoor experiences and guided activities designed to connect you with nature.
Our history
In the preserved south west of Mauritius, Bel Ombre Nature Reserve stands on land shaped by both nature and history. The reserve takes its name from the former Bel Ombre sugar estate founded in the 19th century, whose chimney still rises above the landscape as a reminder of its past. The center itself once served as the summer residence of British and French Governors during the colonial period.
Over time, this estate has evolved into a protected sanctuary where rivers, forests and waterfalls coexist with traces of earlier human presence. Each reserve is defined by its own ecology, with distinctive endemic fauna and flora.
