The Natural History Museum is the only national institution exclusively dedicated to the study of the taxonomy and systematics of Mozambique's fauna. The Museum preserves specimens of fauna in scientific reference collections. The Museum compiles information on the distribution and use of Mozambique's faunal resources, conducts studies to determine the conservation status of faunal species, and investigates aspects of the natural history of faunal species. In its outreach activities, it provides public services supporting education, informal citizen education, dissemination of faunal and cultural (ethnographic) heritage, and advisory services to public and private institutions in the areas of fauna and biodiversity. The Museum is also a landmark tourist institution for Mozambique and the city of Maputo, serving as a place for disseminating faunal and cultural heritage and biodiversity to national and foreign citizens.
