Exploring the Baines' Baobabs of Nxai Pan National Park

Baines' Baobabs sit on a small rocky island overlooking the white crust of Kudiakam Pan in the southern section of Nxai Pan National Park. International visitors pay a daily entry fee of P190 per person, along with a P50 charge for foreign-registered vehicles. Reaching this remote cluster of trees requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle capable of navigating 37 kilometers of thick Kalahari sand tracks starting from the main park gate. Most travelers reach the gate after a 140-kilometer drive from Maun, the primary hub for tourism in northern Botswana.

The Historical Legacy of the Seven Sisters

Thomas Baines and the 1862 Expedition

Thomas Baines immortalized this specific grove on May 22, 1862, while traveling alongside explorer James Chapman. The group was heading toward Victoria Falls when they stopped to rest under these massive trees, which Baines subsequently captured in a famous watercolor painting. His artwork serves as a remarkably accurate record of the site, showing seven distinct baobabs that have remained largely unchanged for over 160 years. While the painting is now a historical artifact, the physical trees continue to dominate the horizon, standing as living markers of the colonial exploration era in Southern Africa.

Ecological Resilience of the Sleeping Sisters

Often called the Seven Sisters, these specimens of Adansonia digitata are estimated to be between 800 and 1,000 years old. One of the largest trees in the cluster fell decades ago, yet its massive trunk remains in place on the pan edge. This fallen giant has not perished; it continues to sprout green leaves and sustain a complex ecosystem of insects and small reptiles within its hollowed bark. The trees survive in a particularly hostile environment where the salty, alluvial soil of the surrounding pan prevents almost all other vegetation from taking root.

Navigation and Logistics for Kudiakam Pan

Essential 4WD Access and Road Conditions

Getting to the site involves some of the deepest sand found in any Botswana national park. The southern approach to Kudiakam Pan is particularly notorious for its soft sand pockets where tires can easily lose traction in the midday heat. I have found that dropping tire pressure to 1.5 bar or lower is essential before tackling the middle section of the track—a detail many self-drive tourists overlook until they are already bogged down. During the wet season from December to March, the pans turn into slippery mud, making the tracks virtually impassable for solo vehicles without recovery gear.

Fees and Entry Permits for 2024

Park entry fees are managed by the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) and are strictly payable at the entrance gate. While the gate staff occasionally accept credit cards, the satellite connection is frequently down, making cash in Botswana Pula the only reliable payment method. Beyond the entry and vehicle fees, anyone planning to stay past sunset must possess a valid camping permit. These permits are not sold at the gate and must be secured in advance from the official reservation offices in Maun or Gaborone to avoid being turned away at the entrance.

Camping and Photography at the Pans

Primitive Camping with Xomae Group

Camping at Baines' Baobabs is managed by the Xomae Group and consists of three designated wilderness sites. These spots offer extreme seclusion but are entirely primitive, featuring only basic pit latrines and no running water or electricity. International travelers can expect to pay around P561 per night for the privilege of staying at these sites. Total self-sufficiency is mandatory; you must carry at least 20 liters of water per person and enough fuel for a 300-kilometer round trip from Maun, as the nearest fuel station in Gweta is often out of stock.

Best Lighting and Seasonal Variations

Photographers usually prefer the winter months from May to September when the air is clear of dust and the pans are bone-dry. The white surface of Kudiakam Pan acts as a natural reflector, creating intense glare during the day but producing soft, pastel tones just before sunset. The north entrance tends to be less crowded than the main track—a detail most guides overlook—offering better opportunities for clean landscape shots without other vehicles in the frame. In contrast, the rainy season brings the arrival of the zebra migration, providing a rare chance to see thousands of animals moving across the plains near the trees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Baines Baobabs with a 2WD vehicle?

A 4WD vehicle with high clearance is strictly required due to the 37 kilometers of heavy, deep sand between the park gate and the trees. Standard cars or crossovers will almost certainly get stuck within the first 10 kilometers of the track.

What is the best time of day for photography at the trees?

Sunrise and sunset provide the most dramatic lighting as the low sun emphasizes the gnarled textures of the baobab bark against the flat white pan. The hour before dusk is particularly effective for capturing the trees silhouetted against the vast Botswana sky.

Where can I buy food or water near the site?

There are no shops, water sources, or facilities of any kind within 100 kilometers of the baobabs. Travelers must pack all supplies, including drinking water and firewood, before leaving Maun or Nata to ensure they are fully self-sufficient.

Do I need to book the campsite in advance?

Yes, campsites at Baines' Baobabs must be pre-booked through the Xomae Group office in Maun. The park gate does not handle camping reservations and will only allow entry for day trips unless you have a printed booking confirmation.

Are there wild animals around the baobab trees?

Elephants are frequently seen near the trees during the dry season, and lions occasionally use the baobab island for shade. Always check the immediate area for predators before exiting your vehicle, especially if you are camping at one of the wilderness sites.

It is an amazing place with a magical feeling. One of the best experience we had in Botswana. Very far away from everything and you are out in the wild. You have to like it but definitely worth to have a night there. The way to go there is quite sandy but part of the experience. We stayed at Nxai south camp afterwards so a good combo for two or more nights. Book in advance if you would like to stay there and ask about the way at the gate. Otherwise just enjoy this amazing and beautiful place.
