The Planetarium Science Center (PSC) functions as a specialized educational wing of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt, offering immersive astronomical shows and interactive exhibits. Travelers can access the facility between 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM from Sunday to Thursday, with adult entry fees for international visitors typically priced at 100 Egyptian Pounds for a single show.
The Great Dome serves as the focal point of the center, housed in the distinctive spherical building that appears to float in a pool of water on the library plaza. This theater utilizes a digital projection system that replaced older mechanical hardware to create a seamless 360-degree visual environment. Most visitors fail to realize that the center offers wireless headphones providing English and French translations for their Arabic-language documentaries. These shows cover topics ranging from the evolution of the universe to the biological secrets of the human body. Because the theater has a specific seating capacity, the 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM slots frequently reach capacity during the Egyptian school term.
Located in the basement level beneath the main plaza, the History of Science Museum focuses on the scientific achievements of three specific eras: the Pharaonic age, the Hellenistic period, and the Arab-Islamic Golden Age. The museum avoids the dry, text-heavy approach of traditional galleries by highlighting physical inventions and engineering feats like ancient water clocks and early surgical tools. It provides a necessary perspective on how Alexandria served as the world's intellectual capital for centuries. The lighting in this section is purposefully dim to protect artifacts, creating a quiet atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the energetic hallways of the neighboring library. I suggest visiting this section immediately after a planetarium show while waiting for the crowds in the main library to dissipate.
The ALEXploratorium functions as a hands-on discovery zone where visitors interact with physics, chemistry, and biology models. Unlike the more formal reading rooms of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, this area encourages tactile engagement with scientific principles. The facility is split into two main sections: the Discovery Zone for younger children and the Exhibition Hall for teenagers and adults. Many of the exhibits demonstrate the mechanics of light, sound, and electricity through movable parts. While the equipment sometimes shows signs of heavy use, the staff is usually available to demonstrate the more complex experiments that might seem confusing at first glance.
Tickets for the PSC are not included in the standard Library of Alexandria general admission and must be purchased separately at the ticket booth near the spherical building. Foreign adult tickets are generally 100 EGP, while students with a valid International Student Identity Card (ISIC) often receive a fifty percent discount. It is wise to carry small denominations of Egyptian Pounds as the ticket office occasionally struggles with change for large bills. Note that the center remains closed on Fridays, which is a common point of confusion for tourists accustomed to weekend openings elsewhere. On Saturdays, the operating window is significantly narrower, typically running from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM only.
The physical layout of the planetarium can be difficult to navigate if you arrive exactly at the showtime. I recommend arriving at the plaza at least thirty minutes before your scheduled screening to clear the security checkpoints and locate the correct entrance ramp. The north entrance near the Mediterranean waterfront is often less congested than the main city-side gates. If you are visiting during the summer months, the internal air conditioning of the Great Dome provides a welcome relief from the Alexandria humidity, but the museum levels can remain quite cool, so a light sweater is surprisingly useful. (Personal observation: the Tuesday morning sessions are usually the quietest, as large school excursions are less frequent during the middle of the work week).
While the primary audio is in Arabic, the center provides wireless headphones for most screenings that offer English and French translations. You should request these at the entrance of the Great Dome before the lights go down to ensure the frequency is correctly set.
Online booking through the Bibliotheca Alexandrina website is occasionally available but can be inconsistent for international credit cards. The most reliable method is purchasing physical tickets at the dedicated PSC ticket window on the morning of your visit, ideally before 10:00 AM to secure a seat for the midday shows.
Children under the age of four are generally not permitted inside the Great Dome shows to maintain a quiet environment for other viewers. However, the ALEXploratorium has a dedicated Discovery Zone specifically designed for toddlers and young children to explore science through play.
A standard visit including one planetarium show, a walk through the History of Science Museum, and time in the ALEXploratorium requires approximately three hours. If you also intend to tour the main Library of Alexandria reading rooms and the Manuscript Museum, you should plan for a full six-hour itinerary.
Dragomir Mitev We waited 45 minutes doing nothing as there isn't anything to do there, to see a movie in Arabic... Nobody warned us it was in Arabic despite us talking to the ticket selling guys in English and to a few other people from the staff and if you think it was common sense, there is an information board at the front where it is written that Egyptians need a hearing set to view the movie.

Fadi Chehimi The worst 800 pounds I spent in my trip to Alexandria with the family. Very weak story and scenario. Extremely poor 3D graphics, effect and production, not leveraging at all the full 360 dome, but rather being treated as flat screen. We watched the mission, not sure of other shows. And by the way, it is only in Arabic, you are never told about it when you book. Don't waste your tine

Morgana A This was the first place I visited when I came to Egypt. I decided to attend one of the events at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina - the Planetarium and was shocked by how rude the workers in this section of the library are. This place is not just a library; it's supposed to be a cultural center. I'm not sure what kind of culture we are promoting with such a rude attitude from the workers who are supposed to be professional. The show itself was okay, but I found myself constantly apologizing to the guest I invited to join me. They, too, were disappointed by the rudeness of the workers.
