Navigating Marina Hurghada: Dining, Yachting, and Local Tips

Marina Hurghada operates as a modern maritime hub with a capacity for 100 yachts ranging from 10 to 50 meters in length. Since its official opening in June 2008, this 150,000-square-meter development has become the primary upscale pedestrian zone for tourists staying in the Red Sea governorate. Unlike the traditional souks found in the older Dahar district, the marina offers a Mediterranean-style atmosphere with wide, paved walkways that are strictly off-limits to vehicle traffic. This separation from the city noise makes it a rare spot in Egypt where one can walk for nearly a kilometer without dodging scooters or cars.

While many visitors arrive by taxi at the main southern gate, the entrance near the local Fish Market at the northern end provides a more authentic transition from the gritty local street life to the polished harbor front. Security guards perform a quick bag check at the metal detectors—a standard procedure across the city—but entry remains free for the general public as of early 2024. Most shops and restaurants stay active until midnight, though the atmosphere shifts significantly from a family-friendly lunch spot to a high-energy nightlife hub after 20:00.

Waterfront Dining and evening Culture

The culinary scene at the marina skews heavily toward international tastes, providing a necessary break for those who have grown tired of repetitive hotel buffets. The Lodge stands out for its heavy wooden decor and consistent steak quality, while others like Papas Bar cater to those seeking a livelier British-pub environment with outdoor screens for sports. Most restaurants begin to fill up after 19:00, especially during the peak months of October and November when the evening air stays around 22 degrees Celsius. If you prefer a quiet experience, visiting around 16:00 allows you to watch the sky change colors behind the masts without the noise of evening crowds.

Photographers should head to the eastern edge of the promenade to capture the Al Mina Mosque in the background. The mosque, with its soaring 40-meter minarets, creates a dramatic silhouette against the turquoise water—a perspective you cannot easily find from the main city roads. I find that the golden hour here lasts about 20 minutes shorter than expected because the sun disappears behind the inland mountains rather than the sea, so time your arrival for at least an hour before the official sunset.

Marine Activities and Practical Logistics

Beyond dining, the marina serves as a departure point for specialized marine excursions that often surpass the quality of those sold inside all-inclusive resorts. While most large-scale glass-bottom boat tours operate from private hotel piers, the private yacht charters docked here offer tailored itineraries to Giftun Island or the Orange Bay sandbars. Prices for a private six-hour charter usually start at approximately 150 USD, depending on the vessel size and seasonal demand. It is often more effective to speak directly with boat captains on the dock during the morning hours—around 09:00—rather than booking through hotel intermediaries who add a significant markup to the commission.

Walking to the marina from Sheraton Road takes about 15 minutes, though the heat can make this uncomfortable during the summer months when midday temperatures frequently exceed 35 degrees Celsius. If taking a taxi from the nearby El Mamsha area, expect to pay between 50 and 80 Egyptian Pounds, though drivers will often ask for more from tourists. Always confirm the price before the car moves or use a ride-hailing app like Uber or Careem to avoid the inevitable haggling that occurs at the marina gates. For those driving themselves, a small parking lot exists near the northern entrance, but it fills up by 19:30 on weekends, leaving latecomers to park in the narrow side streets of Sakala.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an entrance fee to enter Hurghada Marina?

Entry to the marina is free for all visitors, though you must pass through a security gate with a metal detector. Some specific events or holiday celebrations might occasionally implement a minimum charge for certain seating areas, but the promenade itself remains accessible without a ticket.

How far is the marina from Hurghada International Airport?

The marina is located approximately 7 to 10 kilometers from the airport, depending on the specific terminal. A taxi ride typically takes 15 to 20 minutes under normal traffic conditions and should cost around 100 to 150 Egyptian Pounds if using a pre-booked service.

Can you go swimming at the Hurghada Marina?

Swimming is strictly prohibited within the marina basin due to the high volume of boat traffic and potential water contamination from yacht engines. For swimming and snorkeling, you should book a boat trip departing from the pier to the nearby islands or visit a dedicated beach club in the Sekalla area.

Does the marina have a dress code for visitors?

There is no formal dress code, but visitors usually wear smart-casual attire in the evenings. While swimwear is acceptable on the boats, it is respectful to cover up with a t-shirt or wrap when walking through the restaurant and shopping areas of the promenade.

Good place for some food and drinks, a bit quirky in places. Disappointed in some of the shops that all prices were in usd. To much hassle trying to work out. Would be better in egp but hey ho we just didn't buy anything from those shops. No hassle from shop staff which was a nice change. The obligatory camel sitting on the pavement of course. You can also book trips, submarine trip etc and if you come out and walk along to the right you come to the mosque and fish market

Cool place for mostly cafes. However for me some restaurants are extremely expensive while the others are cafés that are not my type. But there are many restaurants and shops. The parking is 30 LE in the weekdays and 50LE in the weekends which is kinda on the expensive side.
