Exploring the Grapevine Ceiling of the Tomb of Sennefer TT96

The Tomb of Sennefer, designated as TT96, is located in the upper enclosure of Sheikh Abd el-Qurna and contains some of the most vibrant 18th-century BC wall paintings in the Theban Necropolis. Unlike the royal tombs in the nearby Valley of the Kings, this burial site for the Mayor of Thebes during Amenhotep II's reign offers a rare glimpse into high-ranking civil life through its iconic ceiling decorated with sprawling grapevines. Visitors must descend a steep staircase of 44 steps to reach the burial chamber, which sits at a higher elevation on the hillside than the adjacent tomb of Rekhmire.

The Artistic Marvel of the Mayor's Burial

Decoding the Vineyard Ceiling Decoration

The most distinctive feature of TT96 is the irregular, rocky ceiling of the burial chamber, which the ancient artists transformed into a lush canopy of grapes. Instead of smoothing the stone to a flat surface, they applied a thick layer of mud plaster over the natural undulations of the rock, painting dark purple clusters and green leaves that follow the uneven contours. This creates a tactile, three-dimensional effect that mimics an actual outdoor arbor (a design choice rarely seen in the more formal royal tombs of the New Kingdom). The deep pigments remain remarkably fresh after 3,400 years because the chamber was sealed and protected from the heavy sun and humidity of the Luxor West Bank for millennia.

Rare Scenes of 18th Dynasty Life

Beyond the ceiling, the walls of the burial chamber and its antechamber depict Sennefer alongside his wife, Meryt, who held the title of Royal Wetnurse. You will notice scenes of the couple receiving offerings of necklaces, amulets, and linen, which provide specific details about the jewelry and fashion of the mid-18th Dynasty. One particularly striking sequence on the west wall illustrates the ritual journey to Abydos, showing the deceased couple seated in a cabin on a boat. These paintings emphasize personal identity and family connections—details that feel much more intimate than the rigid, god-focused iconography found in the tombs of the pharaohs.

Navigating the Heights of Sheikh Abd el-Qurna

Physical Demands and Access Tips

Reaching the entrance of the Tomb of Sennefer requires a moderately strenuous climb up the winding paths of the Sheikh Abd el-Qurna hillside. The interior space is significantly more cramped than the Valley of the Kings, and the air can become quite heavy and humid due to the lack of modern ventilation systems. You should be prepared to crouch in certain sections where the ceiling height drops below five feet, especially near the four central pillars of the burial chamber. The northern entrance is usually less congested during the midday hours, as most large tour groups prioritize the lower plains—this is the ideal window for photographers wanting to capture the ceiling without interference.

Ticketing and Combined Itineraries

Access to TT96 is typically sold as a combined ticket with the Tomb of Rekhmire (TT100), located just a short walk down the slope. For foreign visitors, this combo ticket is priced at approximately 200 EGP as of early 2024, but you must purchase it at the central West Bank ticket office before heading up the hill. There is no ticket booth at the tomb entrance itself, and the site guards will only scan pre-purchased physical or digital passes. Most travelers overlook this cluster of tombs in favor of the more famous sites, but combining Sennefer with the nearby Tomb of Ramose provides a much broader understanding of the artistic evolution between the reigns of Amenhotep II and Akhenaten.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many steps are in the Tomb of Sennefer?

Visitors must navigate a narrow and steep staircase consisting of 44 steps to reach the underground burial chamber. The descent is quite vertical and may be difficult for those with mobility issues or claustrophobia.

What is the ticket price for TT96?

The entry fee is usually bundled with the Tomb of Rekhmire and costs 200 Egyptian Pounds for foreign adults as of 2024. You must buy this ticket at the main antiquities office near the Colossi of Memnon before arriving at the hillside.

Is photography allowed inside the tomb?

Standard mobile phone photography is generally permitted for free, though professional cameras and tripods require a separate photography permit purchased in advance. Flash is strictly prohibited to prevent the degradation of the ancient pigments on the plaster walls.

When is the best time to visit the Tomb of the Vineyards?

Arriving at the site between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM is recommended to avoid the peak heat and the occasional small tour group. The tomb remains relatively quiet compared to the Valley of the Kings, often allowing for a more private experience of the artwork.

Who was Sennefer buried with?

Sennefer was buried alongside his wife Meryt, and the tomb paintings frequently depict her offering him lotus flowers and myrrh. Their daughter Mut-tuy is also represented in the antechamber, where she is shown leading a procession of offering bearers.

Best tomb to see in Luxor imho. Located in the Valley of the Nobles. No queue very quiet compared to the Valley of the Kings and hardly any people around in the morning and stunning preserved colours. Steep steps and low ceiling.

Tickets are sold for a combination of Sennefer and Rekhmire. Both are interesting but not spectacular. If you have the time, go and check them out. But if you don’t, you haven’t missed much.

Absolutely the most beautiful tomb in all the Luxor Valley. This was in Tombs of the Nobles. Usually all go to Valley of the Kings & Queens. But this is a must see.

This is the real location of the tomb on the map. My favourite tomb in the valley of the nobles. I came just to see this one. The level of detail is incredible, the ceiling and columns all i great state. Worth the visit 100%, small tomb compare to the ones in Valley of the kings.
