Konongo, also known as Konongo-Odumase, is a mining town located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, known for its gold bar and manganese mining industries. It serves as the capital of the Asante Akim Central Municipality and had a population of 41,238 as of 2012. Located approximately 53 kilometers from Kumasi, the capital of Ashanti, Konongo has a rich history tied to the British-owned gold mines that attracted people from various West African nations. The town was once the commercial capital of the Kumasi East Council, which later became the Asante-Akyem District. Konongo is also home to Konongo-Odumase Senior High School, established in 1953. The Konongo Gold Mine, an open-pit operation, continues to be a key economic contributor to the region.
