Hiking to Tagbo Falls in the Liati Wote Village of Ghana

Tagbo Falls sits at the base of the mountain range near Liati Wote in the Volta Region of Ghana. Travelers typically reach the site after a 45-minute trek that begins at the community tourism office where visitors pay a fee of approximately 40 GHS. Unlike the higher-profile Wli Falls nearby, this site offers a more secluded experience characterized by dense rainforest and active agricultural plots that line the valley floor.

Logistics and Trail Navigation from Liati Wote

Entrance Fees and Community Tourism

The Liati Wote community manages Tagbo Falls through a structured eco-tourism model that directly benefits the local population of fewer than 600 residents. According to the most recent financial reports from the Afadzato South District, the community generated GHS 181,603 from tourism in 2023, demonstrating a sharp rise from previous years. International travelers typically pay a fee of 40 GHS at the visitor center, though this price often increases to 80 GHS if combined with a permit for the nearby Mount Afadjato. All excursions require a local guide as part of the community-based biodiversity conservation project, a detail that ensures funds are distributed fairly among the village families.

The Trek Through Cacao and Coffee Plantations

The journey to the water follows a relatively flat path spanning approximately 3 kilometers from the village center. This trail provides an up-close look at the agricultural backbone of the Volta Region, winding specifically through active cocoa and coffee plantations. Unlike the more rugged ascent of Afadjato, this walk is manageable for those with average fitness levels and usually takes 45 to 60 minutes to complete. The canopy remains dense enough to offer relief from the tropical sun, though the humidity levels in the forest often make the trek feel more strenuous than the elevation profile suggests.

The Hydrology and Ecology of the Falls

Seasonal Water Volume and Swimming Conditions

The falls descend in multiple stages from the Akwapim-Togo mountain range, with the final drop reaching approximately 60 meters in height. The water pools in a shallow basin at the base where the depth is generally safe for swimming, though the temperature remains notably colder than the surrounding air. During the peak of the rainy season between May and October, the volume of the Tagbo River increases significantly, creating a forceful spray that cools the entire canyon area. In contrast, visiting during the dry months from November to March results in a more delicate trickle, making the hike more about the forest environment than the water volume itself.

Biodiversity and Butterfly Species

This specific corridor of the Volta highlands is recognized for its extraordinary entomological diversity, with records showing over 300 different species of butterflies in the Liati Wote area. The semi-deciduous forest environment supports a variety of avian life and unique flora that thrives in the moisture-rich microclimate of the falls. The best way to observe these species is to begin the hike before 9:00 AM when the light filters through the trees and the insects are most active. This timing also allows you to finish the hike before the midday heat peaks, which is a practical consideration most travelers overlook when planning their itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to visit Tagbo Falls?

International visitors are charged 40 GHS for an individual ticket to the falls, while the price for Ghanaians is typically 10 GHS. You can purchase a combined ticket for both the waterfall and Mount Afadjato for 80 GHS at the community tourism office.

Can you swim in the pool at Tagbo Falls?

Yes, swimming is allowed in the natural plunge pool located at the base of the final 60-meter drop. The water is quite cold but refreshing after the 45-minute hike through the humid forest.

Is a guide required for the hike?

Liati Wote community policy mandates that all visitors be accompanied by a local guide to ensure safety and support the community tourism initiative. These guides are knowledgeable about the local cacao farms and the butterfly species found along the trail.

What is the best month to visit the waterfall?

The most impressive water volume occurs during the rainy season from May to October when the 60-meter drop is most powerful. If you prefer dry and easy walking conditions, the months between November and April are more suitable despite the reduced water flow.

From the base of the mountain, you would have to hike at least 40 minutes to get to the falls. There are three bridges to cross to get you to the falls. The falls is enveloped by the mountains and the water is very cold. The water from the falls sprinkles beyond the pond so you might get a little bit wet even when you don't swim. There are wild animals on the way to the falls. There are harmless though and you might be lucky to spot few. There is also a couple of fish in the pond. It's advisable you don't swim, and even swim farthest if you are not a swimmer. The experience was great though.

One of the most beautiful falls in the whole of the world. Visiting this place made me fall in love with the Volta Region of Ghana in a passionate way. What's exciting about visiting this falls is that, it's a part of the Afadjato mountain climb package. Best to visit very early in the morning

Tagbo falls is the tenth waterfall I’ve been to in Ghana. If you have the famous Wli falls and Mount Afadzato in your travel plans you should see this too as they are within the same municipality. The footpath to Tagbo falls isn’t smooth but adventurous though. Make sure you’re wearing comfortable clothes and sneakers.
