Tema, located 25 kilometers east of Accra along the Atlantic coast, serves as Ghana's largest seaport and is often referred to as the "Harbour City." Originally a small fishing village, Tema was transformed into a modern urban center under the leadership of Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, following the construction of its deepwater harbor in 1961. Designed by urban planner Theodore S. Clerk, the city is now a major industrial hub, housing an oil refinery, factories, and extensive trade operations. Tema is well-connected to Accra via highway and railway and comprises 25 numbered communities, each equipped with essential amenities, while the Greenwich Meridian runs directly through the city.
