Visiting the Baobab Amoureux in Morondava

The Baobab Amoureux stands approximately 7 kilometers north of the famous Avenue of the Baobabs in western Madagascar. This natural formation consists of two Adansonia za trees that have grown spirally around each other over several centuries. Most visitors reach this site via a 40-minute drive from the coastal town of Morondava, navigating a bumpy laterite road that requires high clearance. While the main avenue is often crowded with photography groups, this specific site offers a quieter atmosphere and a deeper look into the local Sakalava folklore.

Natural History and Folklore of the Lovers' Baobab

Identifying the Adansonia Za Species

While the massive, cylindrical trees on the primary Allée des Baobabs belong to the Adansonia grandidieri species, the Baobab Amoureux is actually a pair of Adansonia za. This species typically exhibits more tapered trunks and a brownish-grey bark that appears slightly more wrinkled than its giant cousins. Many travelers confuse the two, but the twisted growth pattern of the lovers is a specific biological trait of the za variety which allows for more flexible trunk development. These trees reach heights of roughly 20 meters, drawing water from the deep subterranean layers of the Menabe region to survive the harsh dry seasons.

The Oral Tradition of the Sakalava People

Local legend suggests these trees were once two young lovers from the nearby village of Mangily. According to the Sakalava people, the pair belonged to rival families that forbade their union. Desperate to remain together, they prayed to the supreme deity, Zanahary, to grant them an eternal bond. The resulting intertwining trunks serve as a physical representation of that answered prayer. Today, it is common to see local children selling small hand-carved wooden replicas of the entwined trees for a few thousand Ariary. Some visitors still follow the tradition of circling the trees three times to bring good fortune to their own relationships.

Practical Planning for the Menabe Region

Logistics of the Kirindy Dirt Road

Reaching the site involves turning off the main Morondava-Kirindy road at a signposted junction near the Kivalo village area. The track is predominantly deep sand and loose red clay. Using a 4x4 vehicle is mandatory, particularly between November and April when heavy tropical rains turn the path into a series of impassable mud pits. During the dry season from May to October, the road is manageable but extremely dusty. You should expect to pay a small community fee of 2,000 to 5,000 MGA for parking or site maintenance, though no formal national park ticket is required for this specific detour.

Timing Your Visit for Photography

Most travelers stop here in the mid-afternoon before heading back to the main avenue for the sunset. I have found that arriving around 3:00 PM provides the best light, as the shadows from nearby scrub vegetation are less obstructive then. The bark of the Adansonia za takes on a warm, ochre hue under the direct sun which contrasts sharply against the deep blue Malagasy sky. If you stay too late, you might find yourself driving back to Morondava in total darkness on roads shared with slow-moving zebu carts. Carrying a headlamp and mosquito repellent is necessary because the insects become aggressive as soon as the sun dips below the horizon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an entrance fee for the Baobab Amoureux?

There is no formal government-mandated entrance fee for this specific site, unlike the managed parks in the north. However, local community members usually collect a parking or maintenance fee of approximately 2,000 Ariary per vehicle. It is helpful to have small denominations of local currency ready for this contribution.

Can I visit the trees with a standard rental car?

A standard sedan or two-wheel-drive car will likely get stuck in the deep sand traps that characterize the 7-kilometer track from the main road. Renting a 4x4 with an experienced driver is the safest way to navigate the terrain. Most drivers from Morondava include this stop as a standard part of a full-day tour to Kirindy Forest.

How far is the Baobab Amoureux from Morondava?

The site is located about 25 kilometers from the center of Morondava. Given the poor road conditions, the drive typically takes between 45 and 60 minutes one way. This time can increase significantly during the wet season if the laterite sections are flooded.

What is the best time of year to visit?

The ideal window is the dry season, specifically from June to September, when temperatures are moderate and the roads are dry. During these months, the trees are usually leafless, which highlights the dramatic silhouette of the entwined trunks against the sky. Visits during the peak rainy season in January or February are often impossible due to road closures.

Mostly all of the tours would avoid to take you to this spot as it it far away from the main road (Avenue of Baobabs - Kirindy Forest) as it is a 24 kilometers round-trip from the junction on this unpaved road... So they will probably take you to another Baobab in Love located about 50 meters in the Akiva Lodge, I think that it was the name...

Amoureux on the map looks like a nice location in the middle of nowhere... Well... The locals in the area have changed it into a tourist trap... Long shelves of carved wooden whatevers in the bushes next to the tree. Parking fees are mandatory though there is...of course...no parking lot in the bushes. The local kids are nice as long as they are handed out sweets, money or whatever... But it can get rough if you don't give what they demand... The way to Amoureux is better than the location and tree itself...

A beautiful and sexy pair of Baobabs intertwined make a romantic backdrop for a photo. The drive is a bit bumpy, but the trees are pretty to see. There are a few vendors nearby selling baobab statues and carvings.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure how you would give this place anything less than 5-stars. Mother nature at its finest, and the local people in the area who were selling were not pushy or rude. It was really cool being here and well worth the visit.
