Monkey Bay, located in the Mangochi District of southern Malawi, is a town situated on the shore of Lake Malawi, serving as one of the main ports on the lake. With a population of 14,955 as of the 2018 census, it is 206 kilometers from Lilongwe and 253 kilometers from Blantyre. Historically, the area was ruled by the Yao chief Mponda in the 1880s. Today, it is a popular tourist resort, often used as a stopover on the way to Cape Maclear. The town is known for its sandy beaches, tropical fish, and diving opportunities. Despite its tourist appeal, Monkey Bay faces challenges, including limited infrastructure and high levels of poverty. The town is connected by bus to major cities and has regular ferry services across the lake.
