Comprehensive Visit Guide for Casela Nature Parks Mauritius

Casela Nature Parks occupies 350 hectares of land on the west coast of Mauritius, offering a mix of safari adventures and adrenaline-pumping activities. Visitors should expect to pay approximately 1,100 Mauritian Rupees for standard adult entry, though prices for specific interactions like walking with lions or quad biking are billed as add-ons to the base ticket. The park has evolved significantly since its founding in 1979 when it served primarily as a bird sanctuary, now housing over 1,500 birds and dozens of mammalian species within its dry-forest terrain.

Core Safari Experiences and Predator Encounters

Walking with Lions and Interaction Safety

The predator kingdom remains the most debated and popular segment of the park, specifically the lion walk experience. Safety protocols are rigorous; participants must be at least 1.5 meters tall and 15 years of age to enter the enclosure with the big cats. These sessions typically last 45 minutes to an hour and require a separate booking well in advance of your arrival date. The guides carry wooden sticks (a standard deterrent in lion handling) and maintain a strict formation that visitors must follow without exception. It is a common misconception that the lions are sedated—they are highly active animals, and the park maintains they are socialized from birth to tolerate human presence. If you prefer a less intense experience, the observation platform allows for viewing the lions and caracals from a secure distance for no additional fee beyond the entry ticket.

The African Safari Bus and Giraffe Feeding

The safari section utilizes open-sided trucks to transport visitors through the savannah-like enclosures where zebras, ostriches, and white rhinos roam freely. This shuttle departs from the central hub every 20 to 30 minutes, and the circuit takes roughly 45 minutes to complete. The rhinos are particularly noteworthy as they are part of a conservation program aimed at protecting the species from poaching. Adjacent to the safari track is the giraffe feeding platform, which I consider a superior value compared to the big cat walks. For a small fee, you receive a handful of pellets or leaves to feed the giraffes directly. The platform is elevated to put you at eye level with the animals—a detail that makes for excellent photography without the safety stress of the predator zones.

Bird Life and the Walk-through Aviary

Retaining its roots as a bird park, the walk-through aviary is one of the largest in the Indian Ocean and houses the endemic pink pigeon. This species was once on the brink of extinction with only nine birds left in the wild, but conservation efforts at Casela and nearby Ile aux Aigrettes have helped the population recover. The aviary also features colorful species from Asia and South America, including macaws and various parakeets that fly freely around visitors. Unlike the thrill-seeking sections of the park, the aviary offers a quiet, shaded environment that provides a necessary break from the intense afternoon sun. Most visitors rush through this area to reach the quad biking, but spending 20 minutes here allows for spotting the more elusive species hidden in the upper canopy.

Adventure Activities and Thrill Mountain Logistics

Quad Biking and Terrain Navigation

Quad biking at Casela is not a simple flat-track ride; it involves navigating 1-hour or 2-hour trails through the rugged Yemen reserve. The 1,100-hectare reserve bordering the park is home to thousands of Java deer and wild boars which often cross the path during the tour. Drivers must be 16 years old, while passengers can be as young as 12, provided they meet the height requirements. The terrain is notoriously dusty (the red volcanic soil of the west coast stains light-colored clothing permanently) so wearing dark, disposable athletic gear is a practical necessity. The double quads are often the first to sell out on weekends—booking these at least three days in advance is essential during the peak tourist season between July and December.

Ziplining and the Canyon Swing

Thrill Mountain overlooks the Rempart Mountain range and features a series of ziplines including a 400-meter line that crosses the canyon. The canyon swing is the most extreme option, involving a free-fall before the cable tension kicks in to swing the participant across the ravine. These activities are managed by a specialized team of instructors who use a double-carabiner safety system. While the views from the zip lines are spectacular, the wind speeds on the west coast can occasionally lead to temporary closures of the higher lines for safety reasons. If you are prone to motion sickness, the 4D cinema near the entrance is a better alternative, though it lacks the genuine adrenaline of the outdoor mountain activities.

Planning Your Visit and Essential Tips

Ticket Pricing and Booking Strategies

Entrance fees for non-residents are tiered, with discounts often available for children under 12 and seniors over 65. As of 2024, the standard adult ticket sits around 1,100 MUR, but this only covers the safari bus, aviary, and petting farm. Every other activity—from the Tulawaka Gold Coaster to the camel rides—carries a separate price tag ranging from 300 to 3,500 MUR. Buying a bundle package online via the official website is typically 10% cheaper than purchasing individual tickets at the gate. The park operates a cashless system for most food outlets, so ensuring your credit card is active for international transactions or pre-loading a park card at the entrance will save time at the lunch counters.

Transportation and Site Layout

Getting to the park is most efficient via a private taxi or a rental car as the public bus system to the west coast can be slow and involves multiple transfers from the north. The park provides ample free parking near the main gate. Once inside, the internal shuttle bus is your primary tool for navigation—the distance between the entrance and the Safari Kingdom is nearly two kilometers and involves significant uphill walking. I suggest arriving exactly at 9:00 AM to catch the first safari bus before the heat peaks at noon. The onsite restaurant, Blue Bird, offers a panoramic view of the coastline, but it becomes incredibly crowded between 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM; eating an early or late lunch will help you avoid long wait times for a table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I walk with lions if I am under 1.5 meters tall?

No, the safety protocols at Casela strictly prohibit anyone under 150 centimeters or 15 years of age from participating in the lion walk. This rule is non-negotiable and is enforced to ensure that the animals do not perceive smaller individuals as prey or playthings.

How much time should I allocate for a full visit?

Plan for a minimum of six to seven hours if you intend to experience both the safari and at least one adventure activity like quad biking. The park is vast and the transit time between different zones via the internal shuttle can consume up to an hour of your day.

What should I wear for the quad biking and safari?

Wear closed-toe shoes and dark clothing that you do not mind getting dirty because the red volcanic dust is extremely difficult to wash out. Sunglasses and a hat are also vital as the west coast of Mauritius is significantly hotter and drier than the central plateau or the eastern beaches.

Is the park open on public holidays?

Casela is open 364 days a year from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, closing only on December 25th for Christmas Day. It remains fully operational on all other public holidays, though these days tend to see a significant increase in local visitor numbers and longer queues for popular rides.

My husband and I had a wonderful day here. We arrived here later than originally planned which unfortunately meant many of the activities we wanted to do were booked for the day. We also queued for over an hour and a half which was quite frustrating. I strongly recommend pre booking activities before arrival and arriving early. Despite this, we had a really great day. Because most the activities had sold out, they included a safari on the tour which was the highlight for me. They also included the toboggan but we decided not to do this activity as the queue was always extremely long and we didn’t want to spend time queuing again. It was incredible being able to get so close to animals, walking through the giant tortoise park and seeing zebras and ostriches so close we could have stroked them. It was quite sad walking around the big cats areas as many of the enclosures were quite small, I hope they get time to roam around larger areas when the park is not open to visitors. Some of the animals such as the hyenas were noticeably frustrated, pacing back and forth which was hard to see. All in all, I would recommend this attraction to people. We would love to do the high ropes and bridge if we visit again in the future.

Casela Nature Park was a pleasant experience overall. The safari was enjoyable, and the staff were friendly. Tulawaka was thrilling, although the long queue was a bit of a downside. I noticed that the cages could use better maintenance, and the park itself felt like it used to be nicer. However, it was still a fun visit, and I had a great time.

**Note:** If you've booked any activities, arrive 1 to 1.5 hours early to avoid missing them, as I did. Don't make the same mistake. I highly recommend the roller coaster ride—there's no need to be scared since you control the speed. The views from up there are breathtaking.

We absolutely loved our experience here from the coaster to walking with lionesses and the ATV safari! The staff truly went above and beyond! The lionesses are not sedated and were very active and have free will to roam as they please during the walks. A special shout out to Robert who made our experience even better!
