Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park: Cozumel's Reef-Side Day Pass
Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park sits inside Cozumel's National Reef Marine Park at Km 9 on the south coast road, about a 10-minute taxi ride from the cruise piers and 15 minutes from downtown San Miguel. Entry costs $31 USD for adults and $22 USD for children ages 4 to 12 — plus a separate $11 marine conservation fee collected at the gate. The park opens Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is normally closed on Sundays, so build your day around that schedule.

What's Inside the Park
A Lagoon, a Reef, and a Botanical Garden
The name Chankanaab means "little sea" in Mayan, and it refers to the saltwater lagoon just inland from the shore — a natural aquarium holding more than 60 species of tropical fish, crustaceans, and corals. The park covers roughly 35 acres, with a botanical garden, a crocodile exhibit, and life-size replicas of Maya architecture scattered along shaded paths. Snorkeling happens off the main beach, where the reef sits close enough to shore that you can wade in and start floating over coral within a minute or two. Underwater statues — including a bronze Christ figure — are placed in 15 to 25 feet of water, so they're visible to snorkelers as well as divers.
Sea Lion Shows and Dolphin Programs
The sea lion show runs several times a day, typically at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and it's included with general admission. Dolphin swims, manatee encounters, and Sea Trek helmet dives cost extra — dolphin packages start around $129 per person, and the park's Discovery Scuba lesson runs $90. These activities sell out first on busy cruise days, so book them before you arrive if you have your heart set on one.
Planning Your Visit
Hours, Tickets, and the Marine Fee
General admission is $31 for adults and $22 for kids 4-12; children under 3 enter free. The $11 marine fee is not included and must be paid on arrival — bring cash or a card, and don't be surprised when the total comes to about $42 per adult. Online day passes sold through third parties bundle snorkel gear, a locker, and lunch for $39 to $65, but the gate price is usually the cheapest option if you're paying your own way. The park is government-run through Cozumel Parks (cozumelparks.com), and fees change periodically — check the official site before you go.
Getting There and Avoiding the Crowds
Taxis from Puerta Maya and the International Pier take about 5 minutes and cost $10 to $15 each way for up to four people; from Punta Langosta downtown, expect 15 minutes. The water at the main beach is rocky at the entry, so water shoes help. Arrive at 8 a.m. if you want first pick of palapas and loungers — by 10:30 on a three-ship day, the beach fills up and the dolphin check-in line stretches. Walk to the far east end of the beach for quieter sunbathing and easier snorkel access. Plan on four to six hours to snorkel, catch the sea lion show, and walk the garden loop.
Facilities and Practical Details
The park has restaurants and snack bars, lockers, showers, restrooms, and lifeguards on duty. Beach wheelchairs are available, and life vests are provided with admission. Sunscreen is restricted in the water — even reef-safe brands are banned during dolphin and sea lion programs — so apply before you arrive and use biodegradable products elsewhere. Cameras are not allowed in the water during animal programs. The park is wheelchair accessible, but the sand and rocky shore entry make it a partial-access experience at best.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to get into Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park?
Admission is $31 USD for adults and $22 for children ages 4 to 12, with under-3s free. A separate $11 marine conservation fee is collected at the gate, bringing the adult total to about $42. Fees change — confirm current rates on the official Cozumel Parks site.
What is the best way to get to Chankanaab from the cruise port?
Take a taxi from Puerta Maya or the International Pier — the ride is about 5 minutes and costs $10 to $15 each way for up to four passengers. From Punta Langosta, allow 15 minutes. Taxis wait at the park entrance for the return trip.
Is the park open on Sundays?
No, Chankanaab is normally closed on Sundays and operates Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The park occasionally opens on Sundays during peak holiday periods, such as spring break, but those dates are announced separately — don't count on it without checking.
Can I visit Chankanaab without doing a dolphin swim?
Yes. General admission includes the beach, botanical garden, sea lion show, and snorkeling access. Dolphin, manatee, and Sea Trek programs are add-ons that cost extra. Many visitors spend a full day snorkeling and relaxing without booking any animal encounter.
How long should I plan to stay at Chankanaab?
Most visitors stay four to six hours. That's enough time for a snorkel session, the 11 a.m. sea lion show, a garden walk, and lunch. If you're on a cruise with a 7 a.m. docking, arriving at 8 a.m. gives you a comfortable buffer before all-aboard.

Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park |Reviews

Prices high, and wifi was substandard— not fast enough for a video call. The area’s cell network is sufficient, so take your call from anywhere along Cozumel’s west coast. A large park, we caught it in the offseason. That does not mean lower prices, but higher— locals need to extract as much as they can before the hibernation period. Dolphin experience here was excellent despite the price. Some negotiation room, but not much. They kept our bikes secure, so we are appreciative.

A fantastic, family-friendly place to relax, enjoy delicious local food, and make the most of the unlimited drinks from the bar. Our guide, José Pepe, was outstanding—funny, engaging, and refreshingly concise, which our family especially appreciated while travelling with a toddler. The manatee encounter was unforgettable. We were able to gently touch and interact with several manatees, and even spotted dolphins swimming into the manatee enclosures despite not being part of our tour. Every visitor also receives a complimentary dolphin charm—a lovely little souvenir. The hospitality was warm, the service was excellent, and the staff greeted us with genuine smiles throughout our visit. There is also a man-made sandy beach where you can relax and swim, which is a real bonus since much of the surrounding shoreline is rocky. A memorable experience for the whole family. We would definitely return!

This was a great way to spend a port day without cruise excursion prices. We had a covered lounge chair on a beautiful beach with good snorkeling. Drinks and food available. There was a nice walking path around a lagoon and through a mini myan replica area as well as a dolphin area. Priced great!

We booked "meet a Manatee" via Royal Caribbean. I was amazed by this place. Taxi ride - good, buffet - very good, tour guide (Sylvia - might have the spelling wrong) - was awesome, Manatees friendly, Dolphin was an added bonus. Prices for photo packages was reasonable ($40 for Manatee and $40 for Dolphin). Free drinks - always nice. Everyone was friendly. Place was clean. This was one of my best experiences. I'm typically disappointed with excursions like this and it is mostly based on how unorganized the whole process is. This place was organized and gave clear instructions. So happy we chose this for our visit. I already told my wife I would like to go back the next time we are Cozumel. My only negative is I wish we could have spent more time there. We didn't get to see the whole park.
