Costa Maya Port: A Cruise Port Guide

The Costa Maya cruise port is a purpose-built terminal complex at Mahahual, on Mexico's southern Quintana Roo coast, roughly 60 miles north of the Belize border. Ships dock directly at the pier — up to four at once — and passengers walk or ride a free trolley 10 to 15 minutes to a gated village of pools, shops, bars, and a small saltwater inlet. Mahahual town sits about 3 km away, a 5 to 10 minute taxi ride.

This is not a city. It is a facility, built in 2001 by the cruise industry on a stretch of coast that previously held little more than a fishing hamlet. Understanding that distinction is the single most useful thing you can know before your port day, because it determines whether you spend six hours at a manufactured plaza or a real Mexican beach town with $3 beers.

Most itineraries give you six to eight hours ashore. That is enough for exactly one substantial activity — the Chacchoben ruins, a beach club on the malecón, or a lazy loop of the port complex itself. Trying to combine two usually means a rushed, sweaty afternoon.

Getting Oriented at Costa Maya Port

The pier and terminal layout

The pier is longer than it looks from the ship. Allow 10 to 15 minutes on foot each way, or wait for the complimentary shuttle that runs whenever ships are in port. The walk is flat and paved, which makes it manageable for most mobility levels, but there is almost no shade over the water section.

Once through the duty-free corridor — everyone funnels through it, no exceptions — you arrive at a central plaza with a stage, a pool area, restaurants, and rows of shops. The whole compound is walled and controlled. Taxis and tour vans wait outside the gate, not inside.

Where Mahahual fits in

Mahahual is the actual town: a sandy malecón lined with palapa-roofed seafood restaurants, beach clubs, and golf-cart rentals. It survived Hurricane Dean in 2007 and rebuilt as a low-key, one-story beach village with no chain hotels. A taxi costs around $8 one way, or roughly $5 per person in a shared shuttle. Some visitors walk it in 30 to 40 minutes, which I would not recommend in July heat with a return trip still ahead of you.

One recurring frustration: several beach clubs and restaurants in Mahahual operate only when ships are in port. On a two-ship day the malecón hums. On a rare empty day it can look deserted.

What to Do Inside the Port Complex

Pools, loungers, and the spend question

The port has two saltwater pools with swim-up bars, and they are free to enter. The loungers are a different matter. Expect a server to ask for a minimum purchase — reports range from $10 to $20 per person in food and drink — before you settle into a chair. Policies shift year to year and by pool, so ask before you sit down rather than after the margarita arrives.

Drinks inside the compound run $8 to $15, close to ship prices. That is the trade-off for convenience.

The Dolphin Discovery area and the small aviary called Aviarius sit near the entrance. Aviarius charges about $14 for adults and $12 for children, and it is included in the multi-attraction Port Pass sold aboard some ships. Feeding the birds has not been permitted since early 2025. The Kakaw chocolate shop next door hands out free samples — a genuine no-cost stop.

Shopping and the artisan market

The artisan market sells hammocks, vanilla, chocolate, hot sauce, and Maya-themed textiles. Vendors are persistent. Prices near the ship run higher than in Mahahual for comparable goods, and some items are mass-produced. If you want a real souvenir and a conversation, buy in town.

Who the port suits best

Families with young children and anyone with limited mobility get the most from staying put. No transport, no sun exposure between stops, and the ship is five minutes away if a meltdown hits. Couples and repeat cruisers usually do better in Mahahual or on a ruins excursion — the port complex feels engineered, because it is.

Beyond the Gates: Excursions Worth Your Hours

Chacchoben ruins

Chacchoben sits about 50 to 60 minutes inland by road, and a half-day trip runs roughly four to five hours round trip including guided time on site. Admission is around 155 pesos for foreign visitors, cash only. Ship excursions run $110 to $140; independent operators charge $55 to $90 in small air-conditioned vans with longer site time. The ruins are less excavated than Chichén Itzá and considerably quieter.

Bacalar lagoon

The Seven Colors Lagoon is 75 to 85 minutes each way. Do not attempt it on a port call under eight hours — that is 150 minutes of driving that does not compress, and a delayed van on the highway is not a risk worth taking on a cruise day.

Mahahual beach clubs

Day passes range from free with food and drink purchase up to $89 and beyond for all-inclusive packages with transport. The southern end of the malecón is quieter and cheaper than the stretch nearest the taxi drop-off. Sargassum can close beaches in some seasons — check before you commit to a beach day, since seaweed has shut down swim areas in consecutive years according to visitor reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pay an entrance fee for Costa Maya port?

No. The port complex itself is free to walk into, and the pools cost nothing to use. Mexico does levy a cruise passenger fee that has risen in stages to $10 per person as of August 2026, scheduled to reach $15 in July 2027 and $21 in August 2028; cruise lines typically fold this into your fare or onboard account rather than collecting it at the gate.

How do I get from the port to Mahahual?

Taxis wait outside the port gate and charge about $8 one way for the 3 km trip, or roughly $5 per person in a shared shuttle; the ride takes under 10 minutes. A free trolley serves the pier only, not the town. Agree on the fare before you get in.

Is Costa Maya worth getting off the ship for?

Yes, if you leave the compound. The port village alone is a clean, air-conditioned shopping plaza with a pool, and plenty of cruisers spend the whole day there happily. But Mahahual's malecón, with beachfront tables, fresh seafood, and reef snorkeling a short swim offshore, is what makes the stop memorable. Budget $25 to $40 per person for a taxi-and-tacos day in town.

When is the best time to visit Costa Maya?

December through April brings the driest weather, calmest seas, and lowest sargassum, with daytime highs of 28 to 32°C. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the greatest risk from August to October. March and April offer near-peak conditions with slightly thinner crowds than the Christmas period.
