Chipinque Ecological Park: Monterrey's Mountain Escape

Chipinque Ecological Park sits just 15 minutes from downtown Monterrey, yet its 1,600 hectares of pine-oak forest feel worlds away. Entry costs 85 pesos per person (less per head if you arrive in a group), and the park opens daily from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., with last vehicle access at 7 p.m. and last pedestrian access at 8 p.m.

The reserve climbs from roughly 730 meters to 2,200 meters above sea level, which explains the 21°C average temperature that makes it a popular retreat from the city's summer heat. You can drive, take a taxi or rideshare, or use the free weekend shuttle from San Pedro Garza García.

Getting There and Getting In

By car from Monterrey

From the city center, head southwest toward San Pedro Garza García and follow Avenida Gómez Morín south until you reach the entrance known as "Los Tubos." From there, the winding road climbs about 2.5 kilometers to the main gate. The drive takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. Parking is available on-site, but arrive before 11 a.m. on weekends—the lot fills quickly, and rangers sometimes close access once capacity is reached.

Public transportation and shuttles

Several bus routes pass near the park entrance, including routes 206, 405, and 308 (the Chipinque–Centro–Colorines route, which runs 24 hours). The 308 takes about 50 minutes from downtown. A more convenient option on weekends is the free Circuito San Pedro shuttle, which runs Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. between Palacio de Hierro and the park's ticket booth. It's a small bus, so go early; I've seen it full by 9 a.m.

Tickets and reservations

Buy your ticket online at chipinque.org.mx before you go—especially on weekends and holidays. The park limits daily visitors. Prices are 85 pesos for one person, 75 pesos each for two, and 60 pesos each for groups of three or more. A 10-visit pass costs 690 pesos. Note that these fees are subject to change; check the official site for current rates. Access to the summits (La M, Copete de las Águilas) requires a separate permit, so plan ahead if you intend to climb.

Trails, Views, and What to Do

Easy walks and family activities

The Meseta trail is the most accessible option: a wide, mostly flat path that leads to the historic General Almazán House and several lookout points with panoramic views of Monterrey. It takes about an hour round-trip at a stroll. Near the main visitor area, you'll find a butterfly house, a children's playground, and picnic tables—useful if you're traveling with kids or want a low-effort nature fix.

Hiking to the viewpoints

For something more substantial, the Mirador El Pinal trail climbs 8.2 kilometers round-trip with about 500 meters of elevation gain; most hikers take three to four hours. The route starts at the main parking lot and shares a section with mountain bikers, so stay alert. Another favorite is the La M summit hike—a steep, roughly 6-hour round-trip climb that rewards you with 360-degree views of the city and the Sierra Madre. You'll need a permit for La M, and the park recommends a guide if you're unfamiliar with the terrain.

Mountain biking

Chipinque has nearly 80 kilometers of trails, and many are open to mountain bikers. The Brecha el Empalme is a popular climb, but it's shared with hikers—yield to pedestrians and keep your speed in check on blind corners. Helmets are mandatory, and if you ride at dusk, bring a headlamp. Bike rentals aren't available inside the park, so bring your own or arrange one in San Pedro.

Practical Tips and Best Times to Visit

Weather and seasons

Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) offer the most comfortable temperatures, typically between 15°C and 25°C. Summer afternoons can be hot and humid, so start early. Winter mornings are cool—sometimes near freezing at the higher elevations—but the skies are often clearest for photography. Regardless of season, the UV index is high at this altitude; sunscreen and a hat are not optional. I learned that the hard way on a seemingly mild January day.

Rules and safety

Stay on marked trails, do not feed or approach wildlife (black bears live here—keep your distance and store food properly), and carry out all trash. Fines for violating park rules, including staying past closing time, can reach 1,500 pesos. Bring cash for snacks and drinks from the small vendors near the entrance; cell signal is spotty once you're on the trails, so download your map in advance. Wear closed-toe shoes with good traction; the trails are rocky and uneven.

Combining with nearby sights

Chipinque is a 20-minute drive from the upscale shopping and dining of San Pedro Garza García, and about 30 minutes from the Macroplaza and Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO) in central Monterrey. If you have a full day, pair a morning hike with an afternoon visit to the Museo del Obispado, a colonial-era bishop's palace with its own city views.

Beautiful park. Some easy tráils and others very technical. Bring the right gear and a lot of water!

I would describe my experience at this park as therapeutic. I took on the challenge to walk up the mountain to La Meseta from the Visitor Information Center which was a good mix of adventurous and rewarding. I was fascinated by the trail and the occasional wildlife that I came across. Information provided on the terrain difficulty at various stages of the trail was useful in helping me plan my route up. I must commend how well maintained the park is as well.

Great place to visit, hike, bike and workout. You are only 20-30 minutes outside of Monterrey up in the clouds. Wonderful animal sightings, friendly staff, and visitors. Great little workout stands along the many hiking trails.

Absolutely beautiful, especially when the skies are clear, without smog or such. The diversity of flora and fauna here is wonderful. Have hiked a couple times from the bottom to the level with the hotel / restaurant and playground, and also hiked around the level 3 & 4 trails by themselves too on other occasions after we have driven partially up and parked. My goal is to hike to one of the paths to the very top areas, but need some extra time (and of course the extra fee permit). This is a special gem for the cities and the people. I would be hiking here so often if I lived in the area. Lol but I’m not sure if I’d have the stamina and energy to ride my bike up nor even down. Nevertheless, a gorgeous mountain park with spectacular views.
