Plaza Mijares: San José del Cabo's Central Square

Plaza Mijares is the free, open-air main square of San José del Cabo, sitting on Boulevard Antonio Mijares in the Centro district, roughly 15 km south of Los Cabos International Airport. It is open around the clock and needs no ticket, no reservation, and no planning beyond showing up — most people spend 20 to 45 minutes here before drifting into the surrounding streets. Locals call it Plaza Antonio Mijares; the name honors Lieutenant José Antonio Mijares, who died defending the town against an American garrison in the 1847 Battle of San José del Cabo.

What You'll Actually Find Around the Square

The Mission Church and Civic Buildings

The plaza is framed on one side by the Misión San José del Cabo, a church that anchors the spot where the original mission stood. The building you see today is a modern reconstruction, not the 1730 colonial structure — a detail that surprises visitors who expect aged stone. Mass times and interior access change, so check the doors when you arrive rather than trusting a posted schedule. Across the square sit City Hall and the Casa de la Cultura, which together give the plaza its working-town feel rather than a staged tourist set. Modest dress is expected if you step inside the church.

The Art District on the Side Streets

Walk off the plaza onto Obregón, Morelos, or Calle Benito Juárez and you're in the Gallery District, where old houses have been converted into galleries, courtyard restaurants, and small hotels. This is the strongest reason to linger. The galleries cluster within a few walkable blocks, so you can browse seriously in under an hour without a map. Many stay open into the evening, which is when the neighborhood looks its best.

The Thursday Art Walk

From November through June, the plaza hosts a weekly Art Walk every Thursday evening, typically starting around 5 pm and running to 9 or 10 pm. Artists set up around the square, galleries stay open late, and a local band often plays for an hour or two. It's free to attend and draws both visitors and residents. If your trip dates are flexible, build a Thursday into them — the difference between a quiet afternoon plaza and a Thursday night here is enormous.

Planning Your Visit

Getting There From the Airport and Cabo San Lucas

From SJD airport, the plaza is about 15 km — the shortest transfer in Los Cabos. A taxi or rideshare runs roughly $35 to $50 USD depending on your starting point; from the cruise port in Cabo San Lucas, expect 32 km and about 40 minutes of driving. Public buses are far cheaper, around $3, with tickets bought directly from the driver. Bring small change: drivers prefer a 20-peso coin and keep things moving. Uber works reliably here too, though availability thins late at night.

Best Time of Day and Season

Late afternoon is the smart choice. The trees throw shade across the benches, the light softens for photos, and the vendors and galleries come to life without the midday glare. Mexican sun here is genuinely fierce — reviewers note intense heat even in late December, with summer highs averaging around 90°F and records topping 110°F. The plaza has been upgraded in recent years with shade structures and seating for exactly this reason. Sundays can feel like a ghost town; Thursdays are the opposite.

Parking and Practical Details

Street parking near the plaza fills up on weekend evenings, so arrive early or take a taxi. US dollars are widely accepted in San José del Cabo, and English is common in shops and galleries. Public restrooms exist but are inconsistent — one visitor reported no toilet paper and an unclear attendant situation, so carry tissue as a backup. The square and historic center are partially wheelchair accessible, though uneven pavement in the surrounding streets makes some blocks harder than others.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Plaza Mijares free to enter?

Yes. There is no admission fee, no gate, and no reservation system — the square is public space open 24 hours a day. You only spend money at the surrounding shops, galleries, and food stands.

What is the best day to visit Plaza Mijares?

Thursday, if you're traveling between November and June. The Art Walk fills the square with artists, vendors, and live music from roughly 5 pm to 10 pm. Any other day, aim for late afternoon when the heat drops and the galleries reopen.

How long should I spend at Plaza Mijares?

Plan 20 to 45 minutes for the square itself, or two hours if you include the gallery streets and a meal. Most travelers treat it as the starting point for a half-day in the historic center rather than a standalone stop.

How do I get to Plaza Mijares without a car?

Take an Uber or taxi from your resort, or ride the local bus for about $3 and pay the driver directly. From Cabo San Lucas it's roughly 32 km and 40 minutes; from the airport, about 15 km.

Great artwork in the area. Some shops priced higher for items that were cheaper in nearby stores. Some shops closed for lunch time.

This plaza is situated in the centre is San José surrounded by colonial architecture. Much quieter here compared to Cabo San Lucas. Lots of options for dining and shopping for local crafts and jewelry. A great place to explore and experience the local culture.

Great spot to come and visit. Thursday evenings Art Walk is best, and there are plenty of interesting painters and other artists showing their Art. If you aren't into that there are plenty of shops in the surrounding plaza and streets.still not interested - well then who's not interested in good food and drinks. Lots of those places mixed in as well. Baja Brewing is a delight. Good food and craft beer! 5 stars.
