Hotel California in Todos Santos: What to Expect
Hotel California sits on Calle Benito Juárez in the center of Todos Santos, about 75 km (47 miles) north of Cabo San Lucas and roughly 80 km southwest of La Paz — an hour's drive from either city on Highway 19. Entry is free, and most visitors spend 30 to 60 minutes inside. The Eagles have publicly said the 1976 song was not written about this building, a point the hotel itself acknowledges. That contradiction is exactly what makes a stop here interesting rather than disappointing: you are visiting a 1948 adobe property that inherited a myth and learned to live with it.

The Building, the Legend, and the Room to Ask For
A 1948 property with a Chinese-Mexican origin story
The hotel began in 1948 under Mr. Wong, a Chinese immigrant who ran several businesses on this corner. Where a gas station once stood, there is now a gift shop. The current owners have kept the pink colonial facade and the courtyard layout close to the original — a choice that keeps the place feeling like a working hotel rather than a themed attraction. Twelve rooms wrap around an outdoor pool and a small courtyard bar. If you plan to stay overnight, ask for room number 5; guests consistently point to it as the one with the best view.
What the Eagles actually said
The band has described "Hotel California" as a metaphor about American excess, not a travelogue about Baja. Employees will tell you the same thing if you ask directly. This honesty is worth appreciating. Treat the song connection as a piece of local folklore, not a factual claim, and the visit becomes more enjoyable — you are looking at how a small-town hotel absorbed a global rumor and stayed standing.
The courtyard, gallery, and shop
Inside, the property functions as a small plaza. There is a restaurant, a bar, a gallery space, and a shop selling souvenirs and jewelry. Reviews from recent visitors describe a heavier retail footprint than in earlier years — one guest counted seven jewelry stores on site — and a 30-peso charge to use the washroom. Set expectations accordingly: this is a commercial space with historical bones, not a museum.
Getting There and Timing Your Visit
Driving from Cabo San Lucas or La Paz
Highway 19 connects both cities to Todos Santos, and the drive takes about one hour each way. Rental cars give you the most flexibility; the highway is paved and well marked. Guided day tours from Los Cabos run roughly 5 to 6 hours total, with pickup between 8:00 and 9:15 a.m. depending on your zone, and typically allow only 45 minutes in town — enough for a quick look at the hotel and a walk down Calle Juárez, not enough for a proper meal and gallery browse. If the hotel is your main reason for coming, self-drive or a private transfer is the better call.
Best months and best hours
November through April brings daily highs of 26–30°C (78–87°F) and almost no rain. May and June are still comfortable with fewer crowds. July through September is hot and humid, with highs above 36°C and real hurricane risk in August and September. Within the day, arrive in the late morning before the tour buses — a detail most guides skip. By noon the courtyard fills, and the narrow sidewalks along Calle Juárez get tight.
How long to allow
Budget 30 to 45 minutes for the hotel itself: walk the courtyard, look at the facade, order a drink at the bar, and take photos. Add two hours if you want lunch at La Coronela, the on-site restaurant, where Belgian chef Dany Lamote builds a menu around organic and locally sourced ingredients — the eggs Benedict with smoked marlin and cilantro hollandaise is the dish people mention. The lamb burger with caramelized onions is the other reliable order.
Pairing the Hotel With the Rest of Todos Santos
What sits within a two-minute walk
The Iglesia Mision Todos Santos is about 100 meters away. The Árbol de los deseos — the wish tree — is roughly 60 meters from the hotel door. Both are quick stops that fit naturally before or after the courtyard. The town's main plaza and theater are within a few blocks, and the art galleries along Calle Juárez and Calle Topete are the reason many visitors end up staying longer than planned.
Beaches nearby, and a safety warning
Playa Cerritos is the closest swimmable beach and the one with surf schools and a sand-bottom break. Punta Lobos, a few kilometers south, is for walking and photographs, not swimming. The Pacific surf here produces consistent rip currents and a fast drop-off — the water often looks calmer in photos than it is. Watch the flags and listen to lifeguards. If you want to swim on a day trip from Cabo, do it at the resort pool on your return.
Practical notes before you go
Check-in at the hotel is after 14:00 and check-out is before 12:00. Pets are not allowed. Room rates shift with season and demand, so confirm current pricing directly with the property. Todos Santos was designated a Pueblo Mágico by the Mexican government, and the town's economy now leans heavily on galleries, farm-to-table restaurants, and surf tourism — which means prices in the historic center run higher than elsewhere in Baja California Sur. Carry pesos for small purchases; the 30-peso washroom fee is cash-only in most accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a reservation to visit Hotel California?
No. Walk-in visitors are welcome, and there is no entry fee. You only need a booking if you want to stay overnight or reserve a table at La Coronela during peak season (December through March), when the town fills up.
Is the hotel actually the one from the Eagles song?
The Eagles have stated the song is a metaphor and was not written about this property. The hotel acknowledges this too. The association is a coincidence of naming that became a local legend — worth knowing before you arrive so the visit doesn't feel like a letdown.
Can I visit on a day tour from Cabo San Lucas?
Yes, and tours run about 5 to 6 hours with hotel pickup starting around 8:00 a.m. Be aware that most group tours allow only 45 minutes in Todos Santos, which covers the hotel and a short walk but not a full meal or gallery circuit.
What is the best time of day to avoid crowds?
Late morning, before the tour buses arrive around midday. November through April offers the most reliable weather, with highs of 26–30°C (78–87°F) and minimal rain.

It’s going through renovation but they let us go in the back area to see it more. The original check in desk was there and the history is amazing. It’s so cool historically. Great bucket list item if you like the Hotel California song. The good part is we were able to leave lol. Cool experience.

Loved visiting Todos Santos, but do not be fooled by false advertising. This hotel has no relation to The Eagles or their hit song. When visiting Todos Santos, go to Santo Pecado for lunch. Absolutely worth it!

Very nice. Lots to do in this small town. Very artistic and a lot of local vendors with amazing local food and products that you won't find anywhere else.

Hotel California, it's not really a hotel... it's a bucket list location. My husband had a Hotel California visit on his bucket list, so we thought why not, it was just another 15 minutes from our ATV excursion. so, we rented a car and took the trip. Hotel California is not a hotel, it is a little bar with years of history and patina all over it. We walked in and the bartender greeted us kindly and offered up icy cold cervezas, he told us purchase of the cervezas would allow us to use the restrooms without paying a $25 usage fee. after our drinks, we walked the rest of the site. Souvenir shop with tons of options, an art gallery with some fine jewelry and not much else. We have a wonderful memory and got to see a legend of a location. Todo Santos is a vibrant, bustling, beautiful little town. I would recommend the trip from Cabo.

Really cool place to visit. They have a good gift shop and great T shirt selection. Hotel California is the toast of the town of Todos Santos. Its a must vist while in the area of Cabo San Lucas. If your a fan of the Eagles and the song "Hotel California" you will totally get it after visiting Todos Santos.
