Monte Xanic Winery: A Complete Guide to Valle de Guadalupe
Monte Xanic Winery sits on a 300-acre estate in the heart of Valle de Guadalupe, about 30 kilometers northeast of Ensenada. It was founded in 1987 by five partners and is widely credited with launching Mexico's modern fine-wine movement. The winery produces 260+ international medals' worth of wine, including the flagship Gran Ricardo blend, and welcomes visitors daily from 11:00 to 17:00 by reservation only. Tastings start at 1,350 MXN per person and include a vineyard walk, a four-wine flight, and a cheese board.

Getting There and First Impressions
The drive from Ensenada takes roughly 30 minutes via Highway 3 toward Tecate. From the U.S. border, the Tecate crossing is usually faster than Tijuana — about 90 minutes total to the winery gate. The final approach is on dirt roads, so an SUV is preferable. A guard checks reservations at the entrance; without one, you'll be turned away.
Most visitors base themselves in Ensenada or Valle de Guadalupe. Hiring a driver for the day costs 3,500–7,000 MXN per vehicle (split among 6–8 people), which is often cheaper than per-person tours and lets you set your own pace. Ride-hailing apps are unreliable here, and police enforce drink-driving limits strictly.
The Tasting Experiences
Monte Xanic offers three main experiences, all requiring advance booking online. The classic tour includes a walk through the vineyard, a visit to the cellar and production area, and a guided tasting of four wines. The Aromas & Flavors experience adds a sensory game with 12 aroma vessels — one deliberately misleading — to challenge your nose. The Gran Ricardo Tasting focuses on the ultra-premium flagship wine and is the most intimate option.
Groups are capped at 10 for the sensory experience, and weekend slots fill up fast. Book at least a week ahead in high season (August–October). The terrace overlooking the valley is a highlight — arrive early to enjoy it before your tour.
What to Expect on the Tour
The tour lasts about 90 minutes to two hours, depending on the group's pace. You'll see the night-harvest operation (grapes are picked at night to preserve freshness), the sorting tables, and the barrel room. Guides are knowledgeable and often bilingual; several reviewers praise specific staff members by name. The cheese board includes local products and is substantial enough to share.
The tasting pours are generous — roughly 2 ounces each. You'll sample Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Gran Ricardo blend. The Chenin Colombard is a standout for many first-timers, and the Gran Ricardo 2021 shows why it's the flagship.
Booking and Cancellation Policies
Reservations require a credit card. The booking fee is not charged upfront; you pay at the winery. Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours in advance to avoid a penalty. The winery is closed on major holidays. Check the official website for current rates — fees are subject to change.
Practical Details for Your Visit
Wear comfortable shoes — the vineyard walk covers uneven dirt paths. The estate is not wheelchair-accessible in all areas. Children are welcome but must be supervised; the cellar tour may not be suitable for very young kids. Pets are not allowed. Outside food and drink are prohibited. The on-site restaurant, Artio, serves Baja-inspired live-fire cuisine by the lake and requires a separate reservation. A wine shop sells bottles to take home, and they'll provide glassware for souvenirs if you ask.
Best Time to Visit
Harvest season (late August through October) is the most exciting time — you'll see crush activities and the valley at its liveliest. Spring offers mild weather and fewer crowds. Weekdays are quieter than weekends. Summer afternoons can be hot (mid-80s°F), so morning tours are more comfortable.

Vibe, knowledge, experience, and customer service is outstanding. Would highly recommend this wine tasting experience. The view of their land is beautiful as well. Jorge was my guide and if you can, ask for him!

Beautiful winery with a delicious selection of wines. The lakeside seating was great as we got to enjoy our wine while doing some bird watching. I recommend wearing close toe shoes if visiting the lakeside area otherwise I highly recommend drinks, food and vibes here.

We did a complete wine tasting including a cave/cellar tour. The wine was excellent which helps. They offered a couple of unique options. We chose to do a card game with 9 cards corresponding to elements picked up by your nose or taste. For each wine, you pick 5 cards. The person that gets the most correct wins that round. It made the experience that much more fun. The winery itself is gated and very well done using a more modern architecture. The views and the people that helped out were fantastic.

We did the wine tasting and the tour. The wine is very good the cheese board was ok, nothing extraordinary but overall it was a great experience. The atmosphere is really cool, clean modern. I highly recommend to visit this winery. We also did the tour. It was short but it nice to see the inside.

Visited Thursday, July 24 – Monte Xanic is a must for wine lovers! We did the Aromas and Flavors experience, which included a beautiful tour of the winery, a fun tasting game where we guessed ingredients by taste and smell, and a delicious cheese board to pair with the wines. The experience was playful, relaxing, and set against the backdrop of stunning vineyard views. Sip local. Support local.
