Mina El Edén: Zacatecas' Underground Silver Mine

Mina El Edén opened in 1586 and closed as a working mine in 1960, and since January 1, 1975 visitors have entered it by mine train through a 600-meter tunnel in Cerro del Grillo. It sits on the western edge of Zacatecas' historic center, which means you can walk to the entrance from the cathedral in about 15 minutes and be underground ten minutes after buying a ticket. The tour runs through lit galleries roughly 2 kilometers long, passes flooded shafts and a chasm bridge, and ends at a rock and mineral museum holding 400-plus specimens.

Expect the inside temperature to sit near 15°C (about 59°F) year-round. That is roughly 10 degrees cooler than a Zacatecas afternoon in May. Bring a light jacket even if the surface is baking.

Getting to Mina El Edén and Touring the Mine

Two entrances, two different experiences

The mine has an east and a west entrance, and which one you pick changes the first five minutes of your visit. From the Cerro del Grillo cable car station, walk about 100 meters southwest to the upper east entrance, where the descent begins with an elevator drop. From the town center, head west along Avenida Juárez, keep going as it becomes Avenida Torreón at the Alameda, and turn right just past the IMSS hospital for the lower west entrance — this is where the mine train loads.

I'd take the train side if it's your first visit. The little rail car covers roughly 300 to 600 meters into the mountain depending on which source you read, and the slow roll through a dark bore is the part kids remember. The elevator entrance tends to be quieter in the morning, a detail most guides skip.

What the walk actually looks like

Guides lead groups on foot through levels 3 and 4, past timbered shafts, exposed ore veins, and pools of groundwater lit for safe passage. Tours last 45 to 60 minutes at the standard pace, or up to two hours if you linger at the museum. Groups run continuously in small batches rather than on fixed clock times.

Children age 6 and up usually handle it well. The passages are narrow but stable, and hard hats are required. Anyone strongly uncomfortable in enclosed spaces should think twice — the route doesn't offer an early exit once you're inside.

The museum and the odd nightclub

The Museo de Rocas y Minerales claims the largest collection of its kind in Latin America, and it's the only one housed entirely underground. Gold, silver, and native minerals sit alongside fossils pulled from around the world. A separate fossil and mineral exhibit has also been staged at the Mercado González Ortega with free entry, 10:00 to 18:00 daily.

And yes, there's a nightclub. La Mina Club operates Thursday through Saturday evenings in a separate section of the mine, with a cover charge and standard bar service. It's an adults-only affair kept completely apart from the daytime family tour.

Tickets, Hours, and Practical Details

Prices and opening times

The mine is open Monday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00. Adult admission runs about 100 to 150 MXN depending on the season and whether the train ride is bundled in; students with ID pay around 80 to 120 MXN, and children and seniors with credentials pay roughly 50 to 80 MXN. Fresh figures from April 2026 put adults at 150 MXN, students and children at 120 MXN, and seniors at 80 MXN. Fees are subject to change — check the official site or call +52 492 922 3002 for current rates.

Budget one to one and a half hours for the standard visit. Cash is still the smoother option at the window, and carrying official ID gets you the student or senior rate without an argument.

When to go and how to dress

Zacatecas is one of Mexico's chilliest cities thanks to its altitude, and the mine holds a steady 10–18°C regardless of the season outside. October through March brings the most comfortable surface weather for walking the center before or after your tour. Midweek mornings give you smaller groups and shorter queues; Holy Week and the August fair pack the tunnels.

Wear shoes with grip. Floors stay damp from seepage, and the walkways over the subterranean pools are slick in spots. A light jacket plus non-slip soles covers nearly everything.

Pairing it with the rest of the hill

The cable car, built by a French firm and running since 2018, lifts you 85 meters from Cerro de la Bufa to the Cerro del Grillo station in a few minutes — a natural way to combine the Bufa viewpoint, the mine, and the city panorama in one loop. Half-day tours departing at 09:45 and 15:45 cover the mine, the cable car, and the Bufa together if you'd rather not stitch the pieces yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Mina El Edén cost?

Adults pay roughly 100 to 150 MXN, students with ID about 80 to 120 MXN, and children and seniors with credentials around 50 to 80 MXN. Rates shift with the season, so confirm at the window or by phone before you arrive.

How long does the mine tour take?

Plan on 45 to 60 minutes for the guided route, or up to two hours if you spend time in the underground mineral museum. Groups depart continuously between 10:00 and 18:00 rather than on a fixed schedule.

Is the mine suitable for young children?

The train ride and lit walkways work well for kids around age 6 and older who are comfortable in tight, enclosed spaces. Hard hats are mandatory, and the route has no shortcut out once the tour begins.

What should I wear inside?

A light jacket and shoes with decent grip. Underground temperatures hold near 15°C all year, and water seepage keeps sections of the walkway damp.

This was one of my favorite attractions in Zacatecas. The mine tour was super interesting and our guide was funny and knowledgeable. The geode museum within the mine was super cool too. We enjoyed being able to walk around the mine after the tour and being able to exit closer to the teleférico.

We really enjoyed our visit to Mina El Eden. Our guide had lots of interesting facts to share about the mine and kindly translated it all into English for us. The mine is spectacular to see, it's huge, and the train ride in was fun. Make sure you don't miss the incredible mineral and rock collection after the tour. A must-do in Zacatecas!

The tour was interesting and informative. I was lucky enough to be the only one on the tour when i went late afternoon. The tour guide (i think her name was alicia) spoke really good English and was charismatic. Went for a few drinks in la mina bar after my tour but the atmosphere was dead as the place was empty.
