Exploring Crocoparc Agadir: Moroccos Nile Crocodile Sanctuary

Crocoparc Agadir houses 325 Nile crocodiles within a specialized 4-hectare conservation area located in Drarga at the entrance of the city. The park opened on May 31, 2015, marking the return of a species that had been absent from the Moroccan wild since the 1970s. Visitors enter through a landmark building shaped like a massive crocodile head, leading into a 600-meter circuit of botanical gardens and reptile habitats. Standard adult entry costs 95 MAD while children aged three to twelve pay 65 MAD.

Wildlife Conservation and Reptile Habitats

The Nile Crocodile Population

The primary inhabitants of the park are the Nile crocodiles, known scientifically as Crocodylus niloticus. These reptiles live in large lagoons designed to mimic their natural environments with sandy banks for egg-laying and thermal burrows that maintain a steady temperature of 15 degrees Celsius. While these creatures often appear sedentary during the heat of the day, their speed becomes apparent during the scheduled feeding sessions. You should head toward the Monster Tunnel — a glass-fronted viewing port near the restaurant — to see the crocodiles lunging for meat with significant force. Most travelers stick to the surface railings, but this underground view offers a perspective of their aquatic movement that most people miss.

Nursery and Laboratory Research

Beyond the adult enclosures, the park operates a dedicated nursery and laboratory. This facility allows researchers to monitor the growth of hatchlings and educate the public on the biology of crocodilians. You can observe the smaller, beady-eyed juveniles in controlled environments before they are transitioned to the larger ponds. The park also hosts other species including giant sulcata tortoises, green iguanas, and various snakes like pythons and anacondas. Watching the marmoset monkeys in their separate enclosure provides a lighter contrast to the heavy presence of the reptiles.

The Five Botanical Zones

Rare Succulents and Aquatic Flora

The botanical collection at Crocoparc features over 300 different plant species divided into themed spaces. The Blue Garden is particularly noteworthy for its collection of blue-tinted succulents, including the critically endangered Aloe suzannae. In the Aquatic Garden, the giant Victoria cruziana water lilies dominate the surface of the ponds. These leaves can grow large enough to support significant weight, though they are purely for display here. The contrast between the arid Moroccan climate outside and the humid microclimate generated by the dense papyrus and tropical plants inside is striking.

The Cactus Garden and Monkey Bridge

The most recent expansion of the park is the Cactus Garden, which showcases various African and American desert plants. A suspended wooden bridge — often called the Monkey Bridge — allows you to walk above the cacti for an elevated view of the terrain. I find this area tends to be quieter than the main crocodile ponds, making it a better spot for photography if you want to capture the Atlas Mountains in the background. The path also includes centuries-old ficus trees with massive aerial roots that have been carefully integrated into the masonry of the park.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

Timing and Feeding Sessions

Timing your arrival is critical if you want to see the crocodiles active. Feeding times generally occur around 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, though these are subject to change based on the external temperature and seasonal needs of the animals. In the winter months, the crocodiles eat significantly less due to their metabolic rates. If you visit during the summer, the park stays open until 7:00 PM or 8:00 PM, allowing for a cooler evening walk. Morning visits starting at 10:00 AM are usually the best for avoiding the peak heat of the afternoon sun.

Transportation and Facilities

Reaching the park from central Agadir takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes by car via the N8 highway. A dedicated shuttle bus departs from the Uniprix in Agadir twice daily at 9:30 AM and 2:45 PM for those without private transport. The on-site restaurant, La Table du Croco, overlooks one of the main ponds, so you can have lunch while watching the reptiles. There is also a small laboratory and a cinema that broadcasts documentaries about crocodile evolution throughout the day. I recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes as the 600-meter path consists of varied textures including stone and wood.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to enter Crocoparc Agadir?

Adult tickets are 95 MAD and children between the ages of 3 and 12 are charged 65 MAD. Infants under three years old enter the park for free, and there are annual VIP passes available for residents starting at 199 MAD.

What are the opening hours for the park?

The park is open daily from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM depending on the season. During the month of Ramadan, the hours typically shift to 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM, so check the official website before traveling.

When is the best time to see the crocodiles being fed?

Feeding sessions usually take place twice a day at 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. These times can vary based on the weather because crocodiles do not eat if the temperature is too low.

How many crocodiles live at the park?

I came here whilst on holiday with my partner and out four children aged between 7-9. We all enjoyed coming here. It was great to see so many crocodiles and they all seemed happy and healthy too. We also got to see a baby crocodile, just a few weeks old. There were also other animals there such as snakes and monkeys. There are two park play areas for the kids to let off some steam. There is a pond where you can stand on a lillypad and have a picture take. You do have to pay for this. There is an escape room here too, but we didn't have time to go into there as our taxi driver was waiting for us and only gave us two hours to enjoy the park. You definitely need more than two hours here. Our visit unfortunately felt very rushed and obviously that's not the parks fault. This trip was the highlight of our holiday for the kids.. They enjoyed coming here more than rising a camel!!! 100% recommend going!

Highly recommended attraction in Agadir. There are so many to see. Hundreds of crocodiles, snakes, monkeys, iguanas, etc... Very nice gardens with lots of plants, trees, cactus... Also there are a few nice playgrounds for the kids. Must be seen to be fully appreciated. If you don't mind travel with local buses then check for the bus L5. We travelled with young kids and everything went fine and doesn't cost us much, only 16MAD per person one way.

A wonderful place with so much thought and love to details alongside beautiful animals and plants! There’s nice entertainment for children, truly beautiful design and architecture, stunning nature. The park has around 300 hundred crocodiles, many free roaming iguanas, some snakes, turtles and monkeys. There are many plants and trees to see and learn more about. We could also get free henna tattoos and many interesting facts from stuff members. The little cafe is not only cute but has actually tasty food. The souvenir shop is cute, and they also have a little candy shop. All in all, it was a breathtaking experience.
