Exploring the E.T. Head Rock in Morocco’s Dades Valley

The E.T. head rock formation stands on the R704 road approximately 15 kilometers north of Boumalne Dades in the Tamlalt region. This natural sculpture, shaped from sedimentary conglomerate over millions of years, requires no entrance fee and is easily accessible from the roadside for any traveler heading toward the Dades Gorges. At an elevation of roughly 1,500 meters, the air is thinner and clearer than in Marrakech, which makes the shadows defining the rock much sharper.

Finding the rock requires a bit of an eye for pareidolia. It sits directly across from the famous Monkey Fingers formations. While most people stop for the massive cliff faces, the E.T. head is a smaller, distinct profile located on the right side as you drive uphill. I found that if you park near the small cafe at the bend, you can walk about 50 meters back down the road to get the angle where the eye and long neck align perfectly.

Geological Context and Finding the Formation

The rock itself is made of conglomerate—a mixture of rounded pebbles and sand naturally cemented together. This specific geology is what gives the Dades Valley its reddish, bumpy appearance, often compared to melted wax or animal appendages. Because of the way these layers erode at different speeds, specific shapes like the alien profile emerge.

The Best Vantage Points

Most travelers miss the formation because they are looking at the larger Monkey Fingers on the opposite side of the valley. To see the E.T. likeness, look toward the lower outcrops on the eastern side of the road. There is a specific pull-off roughly 200 meters before the steep hairpin turns begin where the profile is most obvious. If you go too far uphill toward the Gorges du Dades hotels, the angle shifts and the rock looks like a standard boulder.

Impact of Lighting on Visibility

Timing is everything for this specific landmark. Because the features of the E.T. head are defined by erosion-carved shadows, visiting at noon usually results in a flat, unrecognizable stone. The best light hits the formation around 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM during the spring months. During this window, the deep recesses create the sunken eye sockets that make the likeness so uncanny. In the morning, the face is entirely in shadow, which hides the depth of the features.

Practical Logistics for Visitors

The drive from Ouarzazate to the formation takes about two hours, covering 115 kilometers of well-maintained pavement. You do not need a 4x4 vehicle to reach this spot as the R704 is a standard two-lane road. However, parking can be tight during the peak months of April and October. It is better to park at one of the designated cafe lots and buy a small tea rather than leaving a car on the narrow shoulder of the road.

Avoiding Tourist Scams

Local men often linger near the roadside pull-offs offering to show you the E.T. rock for a fee. The formation is clearly visible from the public highway and requires no guide. I suggest politely declining these offers and finding the rock yourself—it is part of the fun. If you decide to hike into the nearby canyons, a guide might be useful for safety, but for a simple roadside photo, it is entirely unnecessary.

Nearby Hiking and Safety

If you plan to hike the nearby Monkey Fingers trail after seeing the E.T. head, wear shoes with significant grip. The conglomerate terrain can be surprisingly slippery when dry because of loose surface pebbles. Most hikers spend about 2 to 3 hours in the narrow canyons. Always check the weather forecast before entering the gorges; flash floods are a real risk in this part of the Atlas Mountains even if it is not raining directly at your location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an entrance fee for the E.T. head rock?

There is no ticket price or official gate for this attraction as it is a natural formation located on public land along the R704. You can view it directly from the shoulder of the road without paying anything to the locals who might approach you. The site is open 24 hours a day, though it is invisible after dark.

How far is the rock from the nearest town?

The formation is situated about 115 kilometers from Ouarzazate and exactly 15 kilometers from the center of Boumalne Dades. The drive from Boumalne Dades takes roughly 20 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions. Most travelers visit the rock as a quick stop while traveling between Skoura and the Merzouga desert.

Can you see the rock in the winter?

Yes, the formation is visible year-round, though snow occasionally dusts the Dades Valley in January and February. Winter temperatures at this 1,500-meter altitude frequently drop below 5 degrees Celsius, so bring layers if you plan to get out of the car. The low winter sun actually creates excellent long shadows for photography throughout the afternoon.

Is a 4x4 vehicle required to reach the site?

The R704 road leading to the E.T. head and the Dades Gorges is fully paved and accessible by standard 2WD sedans. You only need a 4x4 if you intend to continue past the Gorges toward M'Semrir or take off-road mountain passes into the High Atlas. For the main tourist route, a small rental car is perfectly sufficient.

Drove there from Marrakech and didn't regret it at all.. We all heard the rumours and saw the TV reports and after looking deep into the eyes of the ET stone I felt an undescribable feeling and I thought that was it! How wrong I was... The next day my life changed forever and I developed a 6th sense of being capable of reading into the future. The next week I saved my neighbour from an otherwise lethal car crash. Highly recommend!

Incredible sight. 10/10 I went after dark, and after staring at the ET head for 17mins, my finger started to glow and I could hear my mother’s thoughts through telekinesis who lives on the other side of the world. If you squint your eyes it kinda looks like a small kitten.

My doctors had already given up on me. They amputated my left ear. After 48 hours on ETs head with my left foot grounded to earth I now can hear again. Arrive early to be the first, afternoons can be very busy.

E.T. head is a magical place. I came here in the dark and by the time I left, there was light: E.T. head cured me from my blindness.
