Kigali City Tower, located in the Nyarugenge District of Rwanda's capital, is the tallest building in the country, rising 20 stories above the city skyline. Completed in 2011, the mixed-use complex was developed by Rwandan entrepreneur Hatari Sekoko and built by China Civil Engineering Construction. The development reflects Rwanda's broader post-2000 economic transformation strategy, which emphasized private-sector growth, urban development, and modernization of infrastructure. Occupying the former site of Kigali's central bus station, the tower includes over 10,000 square meters of retail space and 7,000 square meters of office space, with additional amenities such as a food court, fitness center, and rooftop bar.
The structure comprises three main sections: the elliptical high-rise tower primarily used for offices, a four-story commercial center, and a multi-level parking facility. While some early retail tenants like Nakumatt and Century Cinema have closed, the complex remains a central hub for business and commerce in Kigali's fast-developing urban core. The building also briefly housed Rwanda's first 5D cinema screen, highlighting its initial role in introducing new forms of urban leisure. Kigali City Tower symbolizes the country's architectural ambition and the evolving landscape of its capital's Central Business District.
