Botanical Exploration at Jardim Botânico do Bom Sucesso

Jardim Botânico do Bom Sucesso sits at an elevation of 1,153 meters on the edge of the Obo National Park, serving as the primary research hub for Sao Tome and Principe high-altitude flora. This botanical reserve contains more than 1,000 plant specimens, including a specialized orchid house that protects nearly 100 species found only on these islands. Visitors typically arrive here after a winding drive through the coffee plantations of Monte Cafe, marking the transition from agricultural land to the dense, primary cloud forest that covers the island interior. The site acts as the formal gateway for those attempting the ascent of Pico de Sao Tome or the shorter trek to the Lagoa Amelia crater lake.

The Core Collection of the Obo National Park Gateway

The National Orchid Sanctuary

The garden preserves a massive collection of epiphytic and terrestrial orchids within a dedicated structure known locally as the Canidró. Researchers have documented over 120 orchid species across the archipelago, and a significant percentage of these are maintained in this high-altitude nursery to ensure their survival against illegal poaching and habitat loss. I found that the best time to visit the orchid house is during the peak flowering months between October and January, though several species bloom intermittently throughout the year. The delicate Angraecum species are particularly noteworthy for their star-shaped white flowers which stand out against the deep green mosses of the display beds.

Rare Flora and Endemic Specimens

Beyond the orchids, the garden serves as a living museum for the Begonia baccata, a giant begonia that can grow up to three meters in height and is endemic to Sao Tome. This species thrives in the cool, damp environment of the 1,153-meter peak where sunlight is often filtered through a persistent layer of mist. The grounds also feature impressive examples of giant tree ferns and local medicinal plants that have been used by islanders for generations to treat tropical ailments. Walking through the herbarium offers a chance to see these specimens in a controlled setting before encountering them in the wilder, more chaotic environment of the national park trails.

Logistics for Hiking and High Altitude Excursions

Reaching the Lagoa Amelia Crater

The most popular excursion starting from the botanical garden is the trek to Lagoa Amelia, a former volcanic crater now filled with a thick layer of vegetation and silt. This hike generally takes about two to three hours for a round trip, depending on the thickness of the mud which can be substantial even outside the rainy season. Unlike many tropical hikes, this trail requires steady footing on slippery red clay, so a sturdy pair of hiking boots is non-negotiable. Reaching the crater rim provides a view of a literal carpet of green, as the water is covered by a dense mat of plants that creates the illusion of solid ground.

Access and Transport from Monte Cafe

Getting to Bom Sucesso requires a vehicle with high clearance, as the final stretch of road past the Monte Cafe plantation is unpaved and frequently washed out by mountain rains. Most travelers hire a 4x4 taxi from the capital for the 15-kilometer journey, which takes roughly 45 minutes due to the steep gradients and sharp turns. While the garden itself can be explored in under an hour, hiring a local guide at the park headquarters is the only legal way to venture onto the trails leading deeper into Obo. These guides provide essential context on the birdlife, including the rare Sao Tome fiscal and the giant sunbird, which are often heard but rarely seen by the untrained eye.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the entrance fee for the botanical garden?

Entrance to the garden grounds typically costs around 50 to 100 Dobras per person, though prices are subject to change by the Ministry of Agriculture. If you intend to hike the trails into Obo National Park, expect to pay an additional fee for a certified guide which starts at approximately 15 Euros for a half-day excursion.

Do I need to book a guide in advance for the Lagoa Amelia trek?

You do not necessarily need to book weeks ahead, as there are usually guides stationed at the Bom Sucesso park office during daylight hours. However, arriving before 9:00 AM ensures you can secure a guide and complete the hike before the heavy afternoon clouds settle over the mountain peaks.

What should I wear for a visit to the high altitude gardens?

Because the elevation is over 1,100 meters, temperatures are significantly cooler than the coast, often hovering around 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. You should wear a waterproof jacket and long trousers to protect against both the damp mist and the biting insects that inhabit the dense undergrowth near the forest floor.

Can I drive a standard rental car to the garden entrance?

A standard sedan is not recommended for the final five kilometers of the ascent from Monte Cafe to Bom Sucesso. The terrain features deep ruts and loose volcanic rock that require the traction and clearance of a four-wheel-drive vehicle to navigate safely without damaging the undercarriage.

Small, but fantastic site for plants and for birdwatching. Friendly staff offer guided tour. Majority of trees has labels with names. There is a parking site. Do not forget to leave your signature in guest book.

A place of pure nature that stopped at the beginning of the 20th century. There is so much natural beauty, but there is so much to do in order to promote biodiversity and effective preservation of endemic species and many others. In the country and abroad. Very much pleasant people, very aware of the challenges, very available to explain everything in detail, but very conscious about the "challenges" they face everyday. A must visit... but prepare for reality!

The project was funded by Ecofac (European union) in the 90´s. A great place to discover the various species in São Tomé : medicinal, ornamental, imported and endemic. Make sure you learn the difference between white and red porcelain roses... Check also the "orchid" garden.... Some people love it, while some others would have hoped something more organized... Anyhow, it´s a great place to learn about nature ! Closes at 1 pm... and only open on requests on Sundays !

This place left me with very mixed feelings ... part of me was about to cry and another was enjoying the rich flora. I personally love gardens and gardening. The visit was extremely interesting thanks to the passionate guiding of our guide. On the other hand, the current condition of the garden is simply disastrous. What was once a fantastic project is becoming a wild jungle in no time. One can blame the Ministry of Tourism in Sao Tomé for doing nothing to maintain its attraction assets in a good condition. But the main responsible are the European project initiators who initiated and started something without ensuring the long term sustainability of the project ...

Very amazing botanical garden with a lot of species and nice Flora. The guides are really nice and professional and know a lot about the island and it’s plants. So nice that I took a lot of pic. The island doesn’t have a lot of places to visit so try to visit all the places from North, south, East and West; don’t stay in town only.
