High Altitude Safaris in Welgevonden Game Reserve

Welgevonden Game Reserve spans 37,000 hectares of high-altitude wilderness within the Waterberg Plateau of Limpopo. Established in 1993 through the consolidation of dozens of private farms, it remains one of the largest private conservation areas in South Africa. The reserve is entirely malaria-free, making it a frequent choice for families who prefer to avoid prophylactic medication while searching for the Big Five. Unlike many public parks, this private reserve prohibits self-driving, ensuring that vehicle density stays low and wildlife encounters remain intimate.

Arrival Logistics and Access Protocols

Reaching the reserve involves a straightforward 2.5-hour drive from Johannesburg via the N1 north, but the final stage of arrival is quite different from other South African parks. You cannot simply drive through the gates to your lodge. All visitors must park their private vehicles at a secure, 24-hour monitored parking lot at either the Main Gate or the East Gate (depending on your lodge's location).

Strict Gate Transfer Times

Lodges typically operate on a rigid schedule for guest collections, usually between 12:30 and 13:00. If you arrive late, you may face a wait of several hours or a steep surcharge — often exceeding R1,000 — for a private transfer. The drive from the gate to the lodge itself serves as your first game drive, often lasting 45 to 60 minutes in an open-air vehicle. It is a detail most first-time visitors overlook, resulting in rushed drives from the airport, so leaving Johannesburg by 09:00 is a prudent move to ensure a stress-free arrival.

Road Conditions and Navigation

The route via the R33 and R517 is well-paved and manageable for standard sedan cars. You do not need a 4x4 to reach the entrance gates because you will not be driving on the reserve's internal gravel tracks yourself. Navigation is generally simple, though cellular signal can drop significantly once you turn off the main highway toward the Waterberg massif. Many local rangers suggest calling your lodge when you pass the Kranskop Toll Plaza to confirm your arrival time and ensure your guide is waiting at the gate.

Biodiversity in the Waterberg Biosphere

Welgevonden is part of the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, a region characterized by ancient sandstone formations that date back nearly two billion years. The topography here is rugged, featuring deep ravines and flat-topped hills that reach elevations of 1,800 meters. This varied terrain supports over 65 mammal species and a staggering 300 species of birds, including the rare blue crane which breeds in the southern section of the reserve during the early months of the year.

The Big Five and Rare Species

While the Big Five are present, the reserve is particularly noted for its white rhino population and regular sightings of the elusive brown hyena. Because the animals here have never been hunted, they tend to be remarkably unfazed by the presence of safari vehicles. You might find a pride of lions lounging within meters of the track or an elephant herd crossing the road with total indifference to your presence. The absence of day visitors means you will rarely share a sighting with more than two other vehicles, a luxury that is increasingly hard to find in the larger national parks.

Cultural Heritage and Rock Art

Beyond the wildlife, the reserve holds deep historical value. There are two protected sites within the borders where you can view ancient San rock art. These paintings provide a glimpse into the lives of the hunter-gatherers who inhabited these mountains thousands of years ago. Most lodges can arrange a specialized walk or drive to these sites if requested in advance — a perspective on the terrain that many guests miss while focusing solely on the large predators.

Seasonal Shifts and Packing Essentials

Climate on the Waterberg Plateau is temperate but can be deceptive. The dry season from May to July offers the best visibility as vegetation thins out and animals congregate around permanent water sources. During these months, daytime temperatures are a pleasant 22°C, but nighttime lows can plummet to near freezing. (Frost on the vehicle seats during a 6:00 AM game drive is a common sight in June).

Summer (November to April) brings the rains and transforms the brown bush into a vibrant, lush green environment. This is when migratory birds arrive and many antelope species give birth. However, the thick foliage makes spotting leopards significantly more challenging. Regardless of the season, packing a windproof jacket and a hat is essential, as the wind chill in an open game viewer is intense even on warm days. The light in the Waterberg has a specific, reddish quality due to the iron-rich soil, making the hour before sunset particularly rewarding for photographers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Welgevonden Game Reserve open to day visitors?

No, the reserve is strictly private and only accessible to guests with pre-booked accommodation at one of the lodges. There are no public picnic spots or self-drive routes available for those not staying overnight. This policy ensures that the daily visitor count remains low, preserving the exclusivity of the wildlife sightings.

What is the best time of year to see predators?

The dry winter months from May to September are optimal for predator sightings because the grass is short and the trees lose their leaves. During this period, lions and leopards are frequently found near the few remaining active waterholes. In contrast, the wet summer months provide more cover for these cats, making them harder to track through the dense bushveld.

Are children allowed on game drives in Welgevonden?

Child policies vary significantly between the individual private lodges within the reserve. While some lodges are adult-only retreats, many others are specifically geared toward families and offer specialized children's programs. However, for safety reasons, most lodges restrict children under the age of six from joining standard game drives unless a private vehicle has been booked for the family.

How high is the elevation at Welgevonden?

The reserve sits on the Waterberg Plateau with altitudes ranging from 1,080 meters in the northern valleys to approximately 1,800 meters in the southern peaks. This elevation creates a cooler, more temperate climate compared to the low-lying bushveld areas like the Kruger Park. The mountain air is crisp and clean, though visitors from sea-level may notice the slight change in oxygen density during physical activities like bush walks.

They'd had a lot of rain and roads through the reserve were quite challenging. The area is extremely rocky and less than ideal for game reserve. For me the lowveld (around Kruger) is far better for a true safari. Game was limited and a challenge to see Lion and Leopard. Lots of buck and Rhino. Seems as if they don't quite have the balance right. They won't allow going off roads and paths, so at times you may only see animals at a distance. All said, we enjoyed our time. Our guide was terrific, and we did see elephant up close.

The most memorable couple of days spent over the Christmas period at the game reserve. Stunning early morning drives and breathtaking sundowners in the wild. I never expected to see quite so much flora and fauna. Due to the rains everything was bursting with life. The cheetahs and leopards were the only elusive animals we did not come across on this visit, everything else was abundant.
