Rumbek, the capital of Lakes State in central South Sudan, is approximately 377 kilometers northwest of Juba. It sits at an elevation of 420 meters above sea level and serves as the administrative center of Rumbek Central County. Following the peace agreement that ended the Second Sudanese Civil War, Rumbek briefly served as the temporary administrative center of the Government of Southern Sudan before Juba was designated the permanent capital. Despite significant infrastructural damage during the civil war, the town has been undergoing gradual repairs. The main road, A43, connects Rumbek to Juba and Wau, and the town is also accessible via Rumbek Airport. The population is diverse, with the Dinka Agar, Dinka Gok, Bongo, and Jur-Bel communities residing here.
