Exploring the Victoria Falls Snake and Reptile Park

Victoria Falls Snake Park, situated at 325 Parkway, serves as a primary educational hub for indigenous and exotic reptiles. Open daily from 8:00 to 17:00, the facility charges international adults a 15 dollar entrance fee while children under twelve enter for 8 dollars. Unlike the misty rainforest across town, this dry, shaded corridor focuses on the often-misunderstood wildlife of the Zambezi Valley. Approximately 2,500 people visit the site monthly, many seeking to identify the snakes they might encounter on safari or in their hotel gardens. The facility is officially part of the Vic Falls Croc Adventure Park, though the snake collection remains its most diverse biological asset.

Within the shaded enclosures, the collection features over 40 distinct species of snakes and reptiles. The local Black Mamba remains the most sought-after exhibit, though the Gaboon Viper often steals the show due to its intricate geometric patterns and five-centimeter fangs. I find that the Gaboon Viper’s leaf-mimicry is so effective that even seasoned guides struggle to spot it without a pointer—a detail most casual visitors overlook while rushing toward the larger crocodile pits. Visitors should look for the Mozambique Spitting Cobra, a snake capable of hitting a target’s eyes from two meters away with high accuracy. The park uses these dangerous examples to teach life-saving lessons about snake bite first aid and local hospital protocols.

Expert Handling and Interactive Education

Daily Feeding and Activity Schedules

Timing a visit for 14:30 is essential for those who want to see the inhabitants in a state of high activity. This is the official feeding time when handlers provide meals to the larger pythons and monitors, offering a rare look at the striking speed of these cold-blooded hunters. Outside of this window, many of the vipers remain perfectly still for hours to conserve energy in the Zimbabwean heat. Photography enthusiasts typically prefer the 10:00 lighting when the sun enters the side of the glass enclosures without creating the heavy glare common in the late afternoon. Staff are usually available for informal talks during these quieter morning hours, often sharing details about the specific rescue histories of the individual animals.

Hands On Interaction and Safety Training

One of the most valuable aspects of the park is the opportunity for controlled interaction with non-venomous species. Handlers often bring out juvenile African Rock Pythons or chameleons for visitors to touch, which helps demystify animals that many locals and tourists reflexively fear. The educational value here is practical rather than academic—guides demonstrate exactly how to walk through tall grass and why 60 percent of regional snake fatalities are attributed to the slow-moving Puff Adder. This snake relies on camouflage rather than flight, meaning people accidentally step on them more often than any other species. Learning to recognize the specific puffing sound they make as a warning is a skill that translates directly to safer hiking in the nearby Zambezi National Park.

Species Conservation and Regional Context

Indigenous and Exotic Reptile Displays

While the focus remains on African wildlife, the park also houses imported specimens like the Green Anaconda and North American Copperhead for comparative study. This variety allows visitors to see the evolution of venom delivery systems across different continents. The African Rock Python is particularly impressive—reaching lengths over six meters—and the park manages several individuals that were relocated from residential areas in Victoria Falls town. By acting as a relocation center, the facility prevents the unnecessary killing of these apex predators when they wander too close to human settlements. Most people do not realize that these pythons are protected under Zimbabwean law, and the park staff frequently assist the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority with reptile removals.

Facilities and Visitor Logistics

The site is located near the central tourist district, making it an easy 10-minute walk from most major hotels like the Kingdom or Ilala Lodge. While the main waterfall requires several hours of walking, the snake park is a high-density experience that can be completed in about 45 minutes. There is a small curio shop on-site that sells crocodile-skin products and local crafts, and the entrance fee includes a guided tour if you ask for one at the gate. I recommend requesting a guide even if you prefer solo exploration because the anecdotal knowledge about which snakes are currently active in the local bush is invaluable for anyone planning a walking safari later in their trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the entrance fee for the Victoria Falls Snake Park?

Adult international visitors pay 15 dollars for entry, while children are charged 8 dollars. These rates are current for the 2025 season but can fluctuate slightly—checking at the gate on Parkway is always recommended for the most recent pricing.

When is the best time to see the snakes being fed?

Feeding demonstrations occur daily at 14:30, which is the best time to see the pythons and other reptiles moving. Arriving fifteen minutes early ensures a good vantage point at the enclosures before the handlers begin the session.

Is the snake park safe for young children?

All venomous species are kept behind reinforced glass in secure, locked enclosures that exceed international safety standards. Children can also participate in supervised handling of non-venomous snakes like pythons, which is conducted under the direct oversight of experienced handlers.

How long does a typical visit to the reptile park take?

Most visitors spend between 45 and 60 minutes exploring the snake displays and the associated crocodile areas. If you attend a full educational talk or the feeding session, you should budget approximately 90 minutes for the full experience.

Are the snakes in the park local to Zimbabwe?

The vast majority of the 40-plus species are indigenous to the Zambezi region and Zimbabwe. However, the park also displays a small selection of imported species like anacondas to provide a broader educational context for reptile enthusiasts.

Oh my goodness what an experience. The guy in charge was super friendly and very helpful. I even got through one my biggest fears which is snakes, by holding one. I do have to say, all snakes looked very well cared for. Their enclosures were clean and a nice terrain which suited the snakes along with lots of water and water holes, some enclosures even had fans. This is an experience which shouldn't be missed.

Walked here after the falls to kill some time after reading some good reviews. It was even better than we expected and for only $6! Abraham showed us around and was super knowledgeable. We even held some of them (bye Felicia!) and my friend fell in love with George after being terrified to hold it. The chameleon was so cute and it was fun to pick him up and watch him walk around slowly on our arms. If you need something fun to do for an hour-ish come see this place!

We received a wonderful tour by Abraham. He has a lot of knowledge about snakes and other animals. The enthusiastic way of presenting and the good interaction gives him a 5-star award for a tour guide. PS: you will get an opportunity to hold and touch a snake. Very nice place to spend 1,5-2,0 hours (adults, as well as for kids)
