About Targi Tours

Experience the trip of a lifetime. A voyage to the Algerian Sahara is an experience like nothing you can imagine. Camping out under the stars, hundreds of miles from the nearest evidence of civilisation, with no others around as far as the eye can see. Here you are truly surrounded by the awesome scale and beauty of nature. Our guides have years of experience in escorting visitors through the challenging terrain of the desert, and will ensure your trip is safe and unforgettable. Discover history older than the pyramids. Thousands of years ago - long before the mighty empire of Rome, the great pharaohs of Egypt, even the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia - the region that is now a harsh inhospitible desert was home to a lush savanna teeming with life. It was here that our ancestors thrived, carving their mark into the rock all across the Tassili plateau. A UNESCO site since 2001, this region of the desert contains one of the highest concentrations of prehistoric art on Earth. Exploring the traces left by these long-lost denizens of the Sahara, one can piece together an image of what life was like before the fertile land turned to dust. Abundant are depictions of the animals that once roamed here at varios points in history, such as cattle, horses, elephants, giraffes, and of course camels. Later paintings show detailed evidence of an advanced civilisation on this land, portraying soldiers in battle. Our guides are highly knowledgable on the subject of the prehistoric Sahara, and will help to put what you are seeing into context.

We are really glad and thankful for our trip in Sahara with Targi Tours. They took great care of us, all the way from entering Algeria to leaving the country. The big highlight was our 7-day tour in Tadrart rouge were the landscapes are breathtaking and ever-changing and the the staff we went with made the whole trip even better. Everything was taken care of - the food was great - and we could enjoy the experience of being on one of the coolest places on earth with great people. I highly recommend going with Targi Tours!

We did a week-long trip in the Tassili Desert near Djanet with Targi Tour, and it was one of the most beautiful journeys of my life. The expedition was exceptionally well organized, allowing us to fully relax and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes. The guides were friendly, professional, and deeply knowledgeable about the desert, its history, and its culture. Their passion and expertise made the experience even more memorable. Salim and Abdlouahab both speak excellent English and French and were always incredibly helpful and attentive throughout the trip. Our driver and cook, Abdellah, truly exceeded all expectations. Not only did he navigate the desert terrain with great skill and care, but he also prepared delicious, generous meals every day — an amazing achievement in such a remote setting. I can't wait to make the tour with them again.

Excellent
Unforgettable tour of a unique and changing landscape with a brilliant crew. An excellent 5 day tour of the desert with one day either side in Djanet. Great crew and translator, we all got on really well. They opened up the history of the Sahara and the various changing landscapes to us which really fired my imagination. We were met at the airport and escorted for the entire trip. Salim and our translator Abdlouahab both speak perfect English and are warm and very friendly - great guys! I think it also helped that one of our party can speak both Arabic and French which made it easier to connect with the other crew members and made for a more enjoyable, memorable time. Food was ok: it didn't agree with me so well but I was willing to live with it because, well, you're camping in the desert. I should mention the Sahara tea was excellent and I looked forward to it every day. "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." The experience of the Sahara is unique and unforgettable. The desert has many personalities and it will refresh and reset you in a way you perhaps could not imagine. There is a serenity in the desert that had a healing effect on me, the kind of peace that only wilderness can bring. For instance, standing in silence and then hearing the feathered whip of a bird's wing around my head as it chased insects on the cusp of a red dune brought me great happiness. Being alone with your thoughts at twilight, sharing stories around the campfire, having a morning movement behind a dune - these are simple pleasures that you should take time to enjoy. Camping in a desert without light pollution means you never saw so many stars. Seeing rock art from c. 8000 years ago puts you in touch with our human ancestors in a profound way. Also, one of the lads gifted me a big stick that he found at one of our camp sites and I loved walking around with it, imagining I was Moses or Peter O'Toole. Seeing the Sahara like this is a once in a lifetime experience. Targi Tours is a family-run business and they really looked after us. Thank you guys!

I’ve spent 2 weeks with Targi tours deep in the Algerian Sahara and it was truly one of the best experiences of my life. Everything was perfect, from the start to the end, with no logistical or communication challenges. Everyone speaks perfect English and French and made me feel very welcoming. I felt completely safe and at home. Salim and the whole team are local and are experts on the desert, the plateaus, canyons, best hiking/camping spots and where the cave art is located at. The landscapes and nature we witnessed on a daily basis, having campfires, sitting under the clear night sky and listening to the stories of the region and people were all incredibly. The food was also perfect. This was the clear highlight of Algeria for me and I would 100% recommend Targi tours to anyone, without hesitation. Wonderful experience overall, 10/10, looking forward to coming back.

We had a great time in the desert with Targi! We really didn’t know what to expect going into the tour and it was better than we could’ve ever thought. We did 4 days in tadrat rouge (highly recommend this part- it is a great combo of seeing ancient paintings and engravings and wild desert landscapes) and a side trip to an oasis. We had AMAZING, fresh food too and felt incredibly safe and cared for the whole time. The highlight was definitely our guide Abdul and driver Abdullah. We learned so so so much from them - history, turag culture and had so many cool conversations about all sorts of topics. Abdul is incredibly curious and knows the desert inside and out. It felt like we could ask anything and made the experience so much more meaningful!! They were attentive when we asked to walk or stop and check out certain spots- they even helped us spontaneously ride camels when we got so excited about them. Salim was also super responsive and is really passionate about giving his clients the best experience possible - it meant a lot. Couldn’t recommend Targi enough. Biggest thing we wish we knew - there are no ATMs in Algeria where you can use a foreign card so make sure you bring enough cash for the whole trip. The visa Salim helps with isn’t actually a Visa but a visa approval form so you will have to get and pay for your actual visa in cash at the airport. This kinda screwed us because even though we brought extra cash, we thought we’d be able to get more at ATMs in Algeria and the visa was expensive so we barely had enough cash to pay for everything. Lessons learned. Also we recommend bringing toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Go to the desert with Targi!! We hope to be back!!
