Debre Libanos is one of Ethiopia’s most important Orthodox Christian monasteries and has played a significant role in the country’s religious history. During your visit, you will explore the monastery complex, including the church associated with Saint Tekle Haymanot, the historic Church of the Cross, and the religious schools. You will also have the opportunity to visit the nearby sacred cave and spring, whose holy water attracts pilgrims. After visiting the monastery, take a short walk to the historic Portuguese Bridge, a famous landmark spanning the Gur River. From the bridge, you can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and the impressive waterfall that plunges approximately 600 meters into the gorge. The area is also home to the Gelada baboon, an endemic Ethiopian species easily recognized by the distinctive reddish patch on its chest. With some luck, you may have the opportunity to observe these fascinating animals in their natural habitat.
