Hiking Kgale Hill: Routes and Tips for Gaborone’s Highest Point

Kgale Hill stands 1,289 meters above sea level as the most prominent peak overlooking Botswana’s capital, providing the most accessible high-altitude vantage point in the Gaborone area. Reaching the summit takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes for a moderately fit climber, with the trail gaining about 300 meters in elevation from the base near Game City Mall. Access remains free of charge, though hikers are responsible for their own safety and equipment while navigating the three primary paths that crisscross the granite slopes.

Choosing Your Route Up the Sleeping Giant

The Cross Trail and Steep Ascent

The most popular path starts near the southern fence line of Gaborone and is identified by the large white cross positioned on the upper reaches of the hill. This route requires a fair amount of physical effort because the terrain consists of large, irregular granite boulders that require occasional hand-over-hand scrambling. Parking near the KFC at Game City Mall is much smarter than leaving your vehicle at the isolated trailhead, as the mall parking lot has active security patrols (a necessary precaution in this specific area). The view from the cross itself looks directly over the western suburbs, providing an excellent spot for photos before the final push to the actual summit.

The Easier Back Route for Beginners

If the verticality of the front face seems daunting, the track beginning behind the old forestry nursery offers a more forgiving gradient for casual walkers. This path winds around the western side of the hill, utilizing a wider trail that was originally cut for maintenance vehicles servicing the telecommunication towers. While the distance is slightly longer, the surface is more stable and less prone to the loose scree that makes the front descent slippery during the dry season. Experienced locals often skip the main routes on Sunday afternoons when the trails become crowded with social hikers, preferring the earlier dawn hours.

Wildlife Encounters and Safety Protocols

Managing Baboon Interactions

Chakma baboons are permanent residents of the hill and they have grown extremely bold due to frequent contact with human visitors. You will likely encounter a troop near the middle section of the climb where the trees provide more shade and fruit. It is vital that you do not carry food in your hands or in open pockets; these primates have learned to recognize plastic bags and lunch boxes as food sources. If a large male approaches, maintain your distance and avoid making direct eye contact—which they perceive as a threat—while continuing to move steadily along the path.

Security and Group Hiking Strategy

Security is the primary logistical challenge for anyone planning a visit to Kgale Hill. While the area is not inherently dangerous, isolated hikers have occasionally been targeted by opportunistic thieves on the less-frequented back trails. Joining a group—such as those that gather at the base around 06:30 on weekends—is the most effective way to ensure a trouble-free experience. The summit wind can be surprisingly sharp—bring a light windbreaker even if the Gaborone heat feels oppressive at the base. Cellular reception remains strong at the 1,289-meter peak, which allows for emergency calls if anyone in your party suffers a sprain or heat exhaustion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hike Kgale Hill?

There is no entry fee or permit required to climb the hill as it is currently open public land. You should however consider the cost of secure parking at the nearby shopping center rather than parking for free at the trailhead.

When is the best time of day to start the climb?

During the summer months from October to March, you should begin your ascent no later than 06:30 to avoid the peak sun. Afternoon temperatures in Gaborone frequently exceed 35 degrees Celsius, making the exposed rock faces dangerously hot.

Is there water available on the trail?

No water sources or taps exist on Kgale Hill, so you must carry at least 1.5 liters of water for the round trip. The dry air and physical exertion can lead to dehydration much faster than many visitors anticipate.

Are there any specific gear requirements for the hike?

While you do not need professional mountaineering equipment, sturdy shoes with rubber soles are essential for grip on the smooth granite surfaces. The descent (especially via the northern face) can be hard on the knees if you aren't wearing shoes with decent cushioning.

How do I get to the trailhead from Gaborone city center?

The hill is located about 5 kilometers south of the city center and is easily reached via the A1 highway. Look for the Game City Mall landmark; the hiking start points are located just across the road from the mall southern perimeter.

Always a great hike up Kgale Hill. Easy enough and a great workout. Hike with friends as its safer than hiking it alone. Always make way for the baboons if they are also on the same trail as you. Be cautious of your surroundings for snakes and scorpions. Enjoy the view when you reach the summit!

Nice and easy hike - beginner level, kid friendly. Beautiful views from city, dam and landscape with South Africa on the horizon. Careful with baboons near parking lot. Bring water, stay hydrated. Please don't litter, so sad to see trash everywhere. On the way down from the hill pay attention when to leave paved path otherwise you will end up at the quarry.

Highest peak of the Gaborone City. A view of the Country's 1st Biggest Dam is Clearer with all its angles visible. The City's view is also much amazing from this side which of course gives angles to the South & South western part of the City which entailes the Urban & industrial places. It's also amazing to be there on a drizzling/ rain or cloudy day... It can remind you of Cape Town's Table mountain
