Andravona: Madagascar's Remote Lagoon Village

Andravona is a Vezo fishing village on Madagascar's southwest coast, roughly 120 km north of Toliara and about 10 km north of Salary, sitting between Mikea National Park and a turquoise lagoon. The settlement is tiny, the road in is sand, and the nearest airport runway (Andavadoaka, FMJL) is 44 km away — which is precisely why the beach still looks the way it does.

What draws travelers here is a specific combination: a shallow tidal lagoon that empties hundreds of meters at low tide, a strip of spiny forest backed by baobabs, and Mikea Lodge, a ten-bungalow camp that has been the area's only upmarket base for years. There is no town center, no ATM, and no grid electricity beyond what the lodge generates.

Where Andravona Sits and What Surrounds It

The village falls within the Soariake Marine Protected Area, a 40 km stretch of coastline running from Tsandamba in the south to Andravona in the north. Six villages border the MPA: Tsandamba, Ankaramifoaka, Salary Nord I, Salary Nord II, Bekodoy and Andravona. This matters for visitors because the reef you snorkel over is community-managed, not a national park with a ticket booth.

The lagoon and the tidal rhythm

The lagoon is the defining feature and it changes character twice a day. At low water the sea pulls back so far that Vezo fishermen walk out with pirogues in the shallows and sell their catch on the sand. By evening the water returns almost to the lodge wall — guests who stayed in October 2024 noted it can turn rough when the wind picks up. Plan snorkeling around high tide rather than fighting the flats.

Mikea National Park and the forest people

The Mikea forest begins immediately inland: thorny scrub, baobabs, and a hunter-gatherer people of the same name who once lived almost entirely within it. Day walks into the forest are arranged through the lodge, and a local guide is essential — the tracks are unmarked and the heat is serious. The forest is also where the Mikea Discovery Museum sits, a small institution in Andravona that made news in May 2025 when taxidermists Bruno Martin and Nathalie Lenglet unveiled a reconstructed Aepyornis, the extinct elephant bird.

Getting to Andravona and What It Costs

There is only one practical route: fly to Toliara (TLE), then take a 4x4 for roughly four to five hours north along sand and dirt track. A standard sedan will not survive it. Tour operators running the western coast route quote the drive as 4 hours; independent travelers report closer to 5 with stops.

Road versus boat

Some itineraries approach from the north instead — Belo sur Mer to Andravona by motorboat takes about an hour, or around three hours by 4x4. The boat is faster and far more pleasant, and between June and September you have a reasonable chance of dolphins alongside. If you are coming from Toliara, the road option is the only one.

Accommodation and rates

Mikea Lodge runs ten tented bungalows of about 40 m² each, with open-air showers and toilets, plus a separate camping area for up to 50 people with shared facilities. Third-party booking sites list nightly rates from around USD 150 to HKD 609 depending on season and platform; treat any figure as indicative and confirm directly, since rates shift and fees are subject to change. A second property, Maminaro Lodge, also operates in Andravona, giving the village two hotel-restaurants in total.

MPA fees

Visitors to the six Soariake sites pay a fee to the MPA management committee, collected in collaboration with hotels and the regional tourism office. The amount is not published consistently online — ask at the lodge when you book, and expect it to be bundled into activity charges rather than sold as a standalone ticket.

What to Do, When to Go, and How Long to Stay

Two nights is the minimum that makes the drive worthwhile; three to four is better and matches what most tour operators build in. The 12-day Baobabs and Beaches loop, for instance, allocates days 3 and 4 to Andravona for nature walks, a boat trip and beach time.

On the water

The signature outing is a boat trip to Andravona Island for snorkeling over colorful reef, with whale sharks possible in the right season and a beach picnic of grilled fish afterward. Sea kayaking, kitesurfing, jet ski and diving are all offered in the area. Sea cucumber farming has been trialed in the village since 2017 across three pens totaling 18,000 m², supported by WCS — an unusual thing to see firsthand and a genuine livelihood project rather than a tourist demonstration.

On land

Walks along the dunes above the village give you the classic view: fishing pirogues, the emerald lagoon, baobabs behind. Quad excursions and visits to the baobab forest are bookable through the lodge. The spiny forest walk with a Mikea guide is the one I would not skip — it is the only way to understand how anyone lived off that ground.

Timing

The Atsimo-Andrefana region averages about 25°C, with a dry season from May to November and rain between November and April. May to November is the window: the Tsiokatimo southerly wind keeps things bearable, and the roads hold up better. July and August bring the coolest nights. December through March is hot, humid and hard on the track.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Andravona from Toliara?

Fly into Toliara, then take a 4x4 north for four to five hours over sand and dirt road. There is no public transport to the village, and a standard car cannot manage the track — arrange the transfer through Mikea Lodge or a tour operator.

Is there an entrance fee for Andravona or the lagoon?

There is no gate fee for the village. The surrounding Soariake Marine Protected Area charges visitors at six sites via the management committee, usually collected through hotels. Fees change, so confirm the current amount when you book.

What is the Mikea Discovery Museum?

A small museum in Andravona focused on the Mikea people and the region's extinct fauna. Its centerpiece is a reconstructed Aepyornis, the elephant bird, completed by French taxidermists Bruno Martin and Nathalie Lenglet and unveiled in May 2025. Access is arranged locally rather than through an online ticketing system.

How many days should I spend in Andravona?

Two nights covers the island snorkel trip and one forest walk. Three to four nights lets you add kayaking, a baobab excursion and a full day of doing nothing on the lagoon, which is the actual point of the place.

Can I snorkel or swim in the lagoon at any time?

The lagoon is tidal and nearly empties at low water, so snorkeling works best around high tide. Swimming is straightforward at the lodge beach, but the water can get choppy in strong wind, as guests have reported in the evening hours.

What facilities exist in the village?

Very few. Mikea Lodge provides restaurant, bar, WiFi and generator power; the village itself has no ATM, no fuel station and no pharmacy. Bring cash, sun protection and any medication from Toliara.
