San Marcos Garden: Aguascalientes' Historic Heart
The Jardín de San Marcos is a walled 19th-century garden in the Barrio de San Marcos, about a 10- to 15-minute walk west of Plaza de la Patria in downtown Aguascalientes. It is free to enter and generally open daily from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, making it an easy, low-commitment stop whether you have an hour or an afternoon. The garden covers roughly 160 by 88 meters — a compact rectangle you can circle in 15 minutes — yet it anchors Mexico's largest annual fair and holds enough detail to reward a slower visit.

What to See and Do Inside the Garden
The Kiosk, Fountains, and Bronze Sculptures
Four entrances face the cardinal directions, each marked by a pink cantera stone balustrade with ornamental urns. At the center stands a cast-iron kiosk inaugurated in 1891, surrounded by four corner fountains added in 1887 and about 90 iron benches along the gravel paths. Beneath the kiosk, fountain-and-light shows run in the evening — a detail worth timing your visit around, since the effect is easy to miss in daylight. Scattered through the grounds are whimsical bronze statues depicting everyday Aguascalientes life; they are popular photo props, and children tend to treat the garden as a small sculpture trail.
Trees, Birds, and a Quiet Morning
Mature ash and jacaranda trees shade most of the garden, and the planting is varied enough that something is in flower even in February. Local birdlife is active in the early morning, and squirrels are common along the paths. If you want the garden at its calmest, arrive between 6:00 and 8:00 AM, when runners circle the perimeter and the kiosk area hosts exercise classes. By mid-afternoon on weekends the benches fill up; the north side near the Templo de San Marcos tends to be busier because it draws the church crowd.
Seasonal Events and Guided Walks
The garden is the symbolic gateway to the Feria Nacional de San Marcos, held each spring — usually from mid-April into early May. During the fair, the surrounding streets fill with stands, music, and several million visitors over the run of the event. Outside fair season the garden returns to being a neighborhood plaza with cafes and arcaded portales along its edges. The city has also run short guided eco-botanical walks (about 20 minutes) focused on the garden's plant species, and a self-guided program called "Si este jardín hablara" uses 11 QR codes placed along the paths to tell stories about the sculptures. Availability varies, so check locally rather than planning your trip around either.
Visiting Practicalities
Location, Hours, and Cost
Address: Jesús F. Contreras s/n, Barrio de San Marcos, 20070 Aguascalientes. The garden sits directly opposite the Templo de San Marcos, an 18th-century church completed in 1765. Admission is free, and there is no ticketing system — you simply walk in through one of the four gates. Hours are most commonly listed as 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, though some local sources cite a 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM window; the earlier opening is the safer assumption for morning walks. Fees and hours can change — check the official municipal tourism site for current details.
Getting There on Foot, by Bus, or by Taxi
Walking from Plaza de la Patria takes about 10 minutes: head west past the cathedral, continue along Moctezuma, then Venustiano Carranza, and keep going straight. That route passes souvenir and clothing shops, which makes the walk itself worthwhile. Several city bus routes stop within a 5- to 8-minute walk, including stops on Allende Oriente and General Emiliano Zapata. If you are driving, street parking in the immediate blocks is limited and metered lots nearby charge around 15 pesos per hour — during the fair, expect to park several blocks away and walk.
How Long to Stay and When to Come
Most visitors spend 1 to 1.5 hours here, which is enough for the kiosk, the sculptures, and a drink at one of the surrounding cafes. Budget two hours if you plan to sit and read, or if you are combining the garden with the Templo de San Marcos next door. For weather, November through April is dry with daytime temperatures around 22–28°C. April and May bring the fair and the jacarandas in bloom but also crowds; October and November offer mild weather and the Day of the Dead events nearby. My own preference is a weekday evening in the shoulder season — the light show runs, the benches are free, and the garden feels like a neighborhood park rather than a fairground.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an entrance fee for San Marcos Garden?
No. The garden is a public space maintained by the city, and admission is free for all visitors. Guided tours and wine-tasting experiences sold by outside operators are separate and typically cost around US$40–44.
What are the opening hours?
Most listings give 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, seven days a week. Some local sources mention a shorter 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM schedule, so if you are planning an early-morning or late-evening visit, confirm with your hotel or the municipal tourism office.
Can I bring pets or take photographs?
Pets are generally allowed, and photography is permitted throughout the garden — the bronze sculptures and the kiosk are the most photographed spots. There is no formal permit required for casual photos, though commercial shoots may need clearance from the municipality.
How do I get there from downtown Aguascalientes?
Walk west from Plaza de la Patria for about 10 minutes via Moctezuma and Venustiano Carranza. By bus, several routes stop within 5–8 minutes of the garden on Allende Oriente and General Emiliano Zapata; taxis and ride-hailing apps are also straightforward and inexpensive for the short trip.

Beautiful very green little park with many statues and quiet areas to sit under the shade.

A quiet spot in the center, trees vye with giant bougainvillea hedges for your attention perfuming the shady park

Beautiful and serene garden with lots of seating, a pretty central gazebo and lots of doves. Well landscaped with a variety of long flowering trees and shrubs that keep the birds and butterflies coming in.

It's a beautiful place and very enjoyable if one loves nature. My wife and I had so much fun!😊

Very beautiful plant life, a lot of birds and even a squirrel or two, got to visit during Feria de San Marcos, so it was packed, but it was a very enriching experience.
