Shopping and Dining at Sam Levy's Village Harare

Sam Levy's Village serves as the primary retail hub for the Borrowdale suburb in northern Harare, situated approximately 10 kilometers from the city center. Established in 1990 by the late businessman Sam Levy, the complex deviates from standard mall designs by utilizing an open-air layout that mimics an English country village. Visitors find brick-paved walkways and a signature 20-meter clock tower that has defined the local skyline for over three decades.

Architectural Heritage and Modern Expansion

The English Village Aesthetic

The original section of the village relies heavily on a distinct architectural style featuring red-brick facades and gabled roofs. This area houses long-standing tenants like the Ster-Kinekor cinema, which typically operates four screens showing international releases. The lack of a roof means weather plays a role in your visit—though the covered walkways provide sufficient shelter during the October heat or January rains.

The Village Walk Addition

The Village Walk represents a significant modernization of the site, introducing glass-heavy contemporary architecture that contrasts with the older brick structures. This northern extension added dozens of high-end boutiques and expanded the available floor space by several thousand square meters. You will find that the atmosphere shifts here, moving from the cozy, somewhat nostalgic feel of the main village to a high-gloss retail environment. This section also hosts several of the city's more upscale cafes where the local expatriate and business communities often conduct morning meetings over coffee.

Practical Navigation and Visitor Essentials

Parking and Access Strategies

Parking remains the most frequent challenge for visitors, especially on Saturday mornings when the lot reaches capacity by 10:00 AM. The central parking area is notorious for its tight turns and constant vehicle movement. I recommend bypassing the main entrance gate during peak hours and heading toward the peripheral parking zones near the supermarket anchors. While the security presence is high with private guards patrolling most blocks, keep your vehicle locked and valuables out of sight as a standard precaution in any major city hub.

Banking and Services

The retail mix covers everything from international grocery chains like Pick n Pay and Woolworths to boutique jewelry stores and specialized outdoor gear shops. Most retail outlets close strictly at 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM, but the dining scene keeps the area active until 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM. Many local residents treat the village as a social square rather than just a place to buy goods. The seating areas near the fountain provide a neutral ground for people-watching, which offers a better glimpse into Harare's middle and upper-class life than almost any other location in the capital. The village also functions as a financial center, containing branches for nearly every major bank in Zimbabwe, including international names like Standard Chartered and Nedbank.

Entertainment and Social Hubs

Cinema and Leisure

The Ster-Kinekor movie theater remains a central draw for evening crowds, often serving as the primary entertainment venue for the northern suburbs. Movie times are generally updated weekly and can be found on their digital platforms or at the box office near the main fountain. On Tuesday nights, ticket prices are often discounted, making it the busiest night for the cinema.

Dining and Cafes

Dining options vary significantly in price and style, ranging from quick service outlets to sit-down Mediterranean restaurants. For a quieter meal, look for the establishments tucked away in the upper levels or the far corners of the Village Walk. These spots avoid the heavy foot traffic and noise of the central corridors. Most restaurants allow for outdoor seating, taking advantage of Harare's temperate climate which stays between 15 and 28 degrees Celsius for much of the year.

A secure, safe and fairly spacious shopping experience here. Bumped into celebrity cleric Passion Java who was surrounded by some heavy, broad shouldered security types as he enjoyed time out with his missus. That aside, this village is really upper class. There is Besty which displayed excellent furniture. There is that lighting shop, solar electrosales hardware, swanky restaurants including Buffalo Creek which incorporates Spur, more restaurants offering fine service. Around the village, there is a car dealership too. Definitely reminiscent of a slice of the UK.
