Mount Entoto and Panoramic City Views
Your tour begins with pickup from your hotel or another agreed location in Addis Ababa. Drive uphill toward Mount Entoto, one of the highest points overlooking the capital.
From the mountain, enjoy panoramic views across Addis Ababa while your guide introduces the city’s geography, growth and historical development. Entoto is closely associated with Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu, who established their imperial residence in this area before Addis Ababa expanded below the mountain.
Continue your cultural exploration.
National Museum of Ethiopia
Visit the National Museum of Ethiopia, one of the country’s most important historical institutions. Its collections provide an introduction to Ethiopia’s archaeological discoveries, ancient civilizations, imperial heritage and artistic traditions.
The principal highlight is the famous fossil commonly known as “Lucy,” or Dinknesh in Amharic. Discovered in Ethiopia’s Afar region in 1974, the approximately 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis specimen is among the world’s most celebrated early hominin discoveries.
Ethnological Museum of Ethiopia
Continue to the Ethnological Museum, situated within the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie on the campus of Addis Ababa University.
The museum presents Ethiopia’s remarkable cultural diversity through traditional clothing, household objects, musical instruments, religious art, ceremonial items and displays representing communities from different parts of the country.
You may also visit preserved rooms connected to Emperor Haile Selassie, offering an additional perspective on Ethiopia’s modern imperial history. The museum provides an excellent introduction to the cultures and traditions that visitors may encounter while travelling around the country.
Addis Merkato
Next, visit Addis Merkato, widely regarded as one of Africa’s largest and busiest open-air commercial areas. The market is divided into different sections selling spices, coffee, grains, textiles, baskets, household products, traditional clothing, jewellery, recycled materials and many other goods.
Walk through selected areas with your guide and observe the lively rhythm of local commerce. Your guide will help you navigate the busy surroundings, explain the different sections and introduce you to some of the products traded in the market.
Traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony
Complete your cultural experience with a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. Coffee holds an important place in Ethiopian hospitality and social life, and the ceremony is much more than simply drinking a cup of coffee.
