This 6-day Machame Route trek is an adventurous journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, taking you through diverse landscapes from the lush rainforest to the alpine desert. The route includes important acclimatization sections through Shira Plateau, Lava Tower and Barranco, helping your body gradually adapt to the increasing altitude. The trek continues through Karanga and Barafu Camp, before the final summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, you descend through Mweka Route to Mweka Gate, where you will meet your vehicle and transfer back to Moshi. Route: Machame Gate → Machame Camp → Shira 2 → Barranco → Karanga → Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi. Duration: 6 Days / 5 Nights Difficulty: Challenging Highest Point: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m Accommodation: Mountain camping Start: Machame Gate Finish: Mweka Gate → Moshi
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After breakfast, you will depart from Moshi and drive to Machame Gate, the starting point of your Kilimanjaro adventure. Upon arrival, your guide will complete the park registration and entry procedures while the mountain crew prepares the trekking equipment and supplies. Once everything is ready, you will begin your hike through the beautiful montane rainforest. The trail is surrounded by tall trees, lush vegetation, moss and a variety of bird species, creating a peaceful and scenic environment. Your guide will maintain a slow and comfortable “pole pole” pace from the beginning, allowing you to conserve energy and gradually adjust to the mountain environment. You will stop along the trail for a packed lunch before continuing toward Machame Camp. As you gain altitude, the forest gradually becomes less dense and the landscape begins to change. After approximately 5–7 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Machame Camp, where the mountain crew will have prepared your tents. You will have time to relax, enjoy the surrounding scenery and take in your first evening on Mount Kilimanjaro. Dinner will be served at the camp, followed by a briefing from your guide about the following day's trek. Destination: Machame Camp Trekking Distance: Approximately 10–11 km Trekking Time: 5–7 hours Habitat: Montane Rainforest Overnight: Machame Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
After breakfast at Machame Camp, you will begin your second day of trekking toward Shira 2 Camp. The trail gradually becomes steeper as you leave the dense rainforest behind and enter the moorland and heath zone of Mount Kilimanjaro. The vegetation changes noticeably, with shorter plants, heather and open landscapes replacing the tall rainforest trees. As you gain altitude, the scenery becomes wider and more dramatic, offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountain slopes and, weather permitting, Kibo Peak. Your experienced mountain guide will maintain a slow and steady “pole pole” pace, with regular breaks to rest, drink water and enjoy the scenery. You will have lunch along the trail before continuing toward the spectacular Shira Plateau. The Shira Plateau is one of the most scenic sections of the Machame Route. The open landscape, volcanic formations and views across the mountain create excellent opportunities for photography. After approximately 4–6 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where the mountain crew will have prepared your campsite. You will have time to rest, enjoy the surroundings and acclimatize to the increasing altitude. In the evening, you will enjoy dinner at camp, followed by a briefing from your guide about the next day's trek. Trekking Distance: Approximately 9 km Trekking Time: 4–6 hours Habitat: Moorland & Heath Overnight: Shira 2 Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
After breakfast at Shira 2 Camp, you will begin one of the most important acclimatization days on the Machame Route. The trail gradually ascends from the Shira Plateau toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,600 meters above sea level. As you climb higher, the landscape changes from moorland to the dramatic alpine desert zone, characterized by volcanic rocks, limited vegetation and impressive views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Your guide will maintain a slow and steady “pole pole” pace and monitor everyone throughout the hike. This day follows the important acclimatization principle of “climb high, sleep low.” You will reach a higher altitude at Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp for the night. After spending some time around Lava Tower and having lunch, you will begin the descent toward the beautiful Barranco Valley. Along the way, you may see the distinctive giant senecio plants that grow in this high-altitude environment. As you approach Barranco Camp, you will have spectacular views of the famous Barranco Wall, which you will tackle the following morning. After approximately 7–9 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Barranco Camp. You will have time to rest, enjoy dinner and prepare for the next day's adventure. Trekking Distance: Approximately 10–11 km Trekking Time: 7–9 hours Highest Point: Approximately 4,600 m Habitat: Alpine Desert Overnight: Barranco Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast at Barranco Camp, you will begin the day's trek with the exciting ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. Although the wall looks impressive from the campsite, it is a hiking section rather than a technical climb. Your experienced mountain guides will assist you through the steeper sections and ensure that you maintain a safe and comfortable pace. Once you reach the top of the Barranco Wall, you will be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across the Barranco Valley and the surrounding slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. This is also an excellent opportunity to take photographs and appreciate how far you have progressed on the mountain. From the top of the wall, the trail continues through a series of ridges and valleys as you gradually make your way toward Karanga Camp. The landscape remains within the alpine desert zone, with rocky terrain, sparse vegetation and impressive views of Kibo Peak. Your guide will continue to monitor your pace and condition throughout the trek, allowing plenty of time for rest, hydration and acclimatization. After approximately 4–5 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Karanga Camp, where you will have lunch and time to relax. The afternoon can be spent resting, hydrating and enjoying the spectacular mountain surroundings. In the evening, you will have dinner at the camp and receive a briefing from your guide about the following day's trek toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. Trekking Distance: Approximately 6 km Trekking Time: 4–5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Overnight: Karanga Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast at Karanga Camp, you will begin your ascent toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. Today's hike is relatively short but takes you into a higher and more rugged environment as you approach the upper slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail continues through the alpine desert zone, where vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and the landscape is dominated by volcanic rocks and dramatic mountain scenery. Your experienced guide will maintain a slow and steady “pole pole” pace, allowing you to conserve energy and continue acclimatizing to the increasing altitude. As you climb, you will have impressive views of Kibo Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The surrounding landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, reminding you that you are approaching the final stage of your climb. After approximately 4–5 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Barafu Camp, located at around 4,673 meters above sea level. This is the final camp before the summit attempt. After lunch, you will have time to rest and recover. Your guide will then conduct an important summit briefing, explaining the schedule for the summit night, expected conditions, clothing, hydration, pacing and safety procedures. Your mountain crew will also make sure that your camping arrangements and summit equipment are ready. You will have an early dinner and should try to get as much rest as possible because the summit attempt will begin around midnight. This evening is an exciting moment as you prepare for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Trekking Distance: Approximately 4–5 km Trekking Time: 4–5 hours Altitude: Approximately 4,673 m Habitat: Alpine Desert Overnight: Barafu Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your 6-day Machame Route adventure. You will wake around midnight, have a light breakfast and begin your summit attempt under the stars. You will start the climb slowly toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The ascent is demanding, but your experienced guides will maintain a steady “pole pole” pace and closely monitor your condition throughout the climb. Regular short breaks will allow you to rest, hydrate and conserve energy. After several hours of climbing, you will reach Stella Point at approximately 5,739 meters. From here, you will continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, you will have time to celebrate your achievement, take photographs and enjoy the incredible views from the Roof of Africa, weather conditions permitting. After spending some time at the summit, you will begin your descent toward Barafu Camp. Here, you will have a short rest and enjoy lunch before continuing down toward Mweka Camp. The descent provides a dramatic change in scenery as you gradually move from the alpine desert into the moorland zone. Upon arrival at Mweka Camp, you will have time to relax, enjoy dinner and recover after this long and memorable day. Trekking Distance: Approximately 15–17 km Trekking Time: 12–16 hours Highest Point: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m Habitat: Alpine Desert & Moorland Overnight: Mweka Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate → Moshi
After breakfast at Mweka Camp, you will begin your final descent of the Mount Kilimanjaro adventure. The trail takes you through the beautiful montane rainforest, where the vegetation becomes increasingly lush and dense as you lose altitude. The descent is generally more relaxed than the previous day's summit climb, giving you an opportunity to enjoy the forest environment and reflect on your Kilimanjaro achievement. Your guide will continue to accompany you and maintain a comfortable pace until you reach Mweka Gate. After approximately 3–4 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Mweka Gate, where you will complete the final park exit procedures and officially finish your Kilimanjaro trek. You will then meet your waiting vehicle and transfer to Moshi. If you have luggage stored in Moshi, you will have the opportunity to collect it before continuing to Arusha. Upon arrival in Arusha, you will check into your hotel and have the rest of the day to relax and recover after completing your Kilimanjaro climb. This also marks the transition from your mountain adventure to the safari portion of your Tanzania journey. Trekking Distance: Approximately 10 km Trekking Time: 3–4 hours Habitat: Montane Rainforest Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Final Destination: Arusha Overnight: Arusha
