Staying at Kiboko Bay Resort on Lake Victoria Kisumu

Kiboko Bay Resort offers a unique glamping experience on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kisumu, featuring 9 permanent luxury tents and a single deluxe cottage. Positioned roughly 7 kilometers from Kisumu International Airport, the property occupies a former quarry site that provides an unobstructed view of the world’s second-largest freshwater lake. Most travelers visit this specific site to see the resident hippos that graze near the shoreline during the twilight hours. The resort sits at an elevation of approximately 1,131 meters, which generally keeps the air cooler than the humid city center located 3 kilometers away. While many Kisumu hotels are standard concrete structures, the raised wooden decks of these tents allow you to hear the lake water lapping against the shore throughout the night. I find that the tents further from the main restaurant offer a much higher level of privacy for those sensitive to the sound of evening diners.

Luxury Tents and Lakeside Living

Room Options and Deck Views

The accommodation consists of nine en-suite safari tents built on elevated timber platforms and sheltered by large thatched roofs. Each tent is equipped with modern amenities including a refrigerator, tea and coffee making facilities, and a private terrace overlooking the Winam Gulf. There is also a deluxe cottage that features an air-conditioned bedroom and a private Jacuzzi for those who prefer more traditional walls over canvas. If you are choosing between the two, I recommend the tents because the sound of the lake wind against the canvas provides a sensory connection to the environment that the cottage lacks. These units are strategically angled to maximize the view of the stars and the distant islands of Ndere and Moboko.

Managing the Lakeside Climate

Living directly on the water requires some practical preparation regarding insects and temperature. Every bed is draped with high-quality mosquito netting, and the staff usually performs a turn-down service to ensure the nets are properly sealed before sunset. Because Lake Victoria spans over 68,800 square kilometers, the weather can change rapidly with sudden breezes cooling down the afternoon heat. I suggest keeping your terrace door zipped shut during the late afternoon to prevent the interior from becoming a magnet for local lake flies. The resort also maintains a swimming pool and a baby pool which serve as necessary relief during the peak heat of the day when the sun reflects intensely off the lake surface.

Wildlife and Marine Activities

Boat Safaris and Hippo Watching

The most popular activity at the resort is the boat excursion onto Lake Victoria to view the hippo pods. These trips typically cost around 3,500 Kenyan Shillings for a half-hour session that can accommodate up to five guests. While morning tours are great for birding, the sunset boat ride is visually superior because the orange light hitting the water creates a better backdrop for photography. You can often see hippos submerged just a few meters from the boat, though the experienced captains maintain a safe distance. Beyond the hippos, these boat trips provide a perspective of the Dunga fishing village where local residents still use traditional wooden vessels to harvest tilapia and Nile perch.

Proximity to Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

One of the tactical advantages of staying at this resort is its location within jogging distance of the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary. This small but well-maintained park charges a modest entry fee and provides a home for rescued impalas, zebras, and several primate species. Many guides suggest taking a taxi, but the walk along Dunga Road is actually quite pleasant and allows you to see the local flora up close. The sanctuary also serves as a critical birding site where you can spot the rare Papyrus Gonolek and the Red-chested Sunbird. If you arrive at the sanctuary gates early in the morning, you will likely have the walking trails to yourself before the city crowds arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the distance between the resort and the airport?

The resort is located about 7 to 10 kilometers from Kisumu International Airport depending on the specific route taken through the city. A standard taxi or hotel transfer typically takes 20 to 25 minutes to complete the journey.

Can visitors see hippos without taking a boat trip?

Yes, hippos frequently come close to the shore of the resort to graze on the grass during the evening and early morning hours. Guests can often spot them from the safety of the raised wooden decks or the restaurant terrace without needing to go onto the water.

Are the luxury tents equipped with air conditioning?

The nine permanent safari tents rely on natural ventilation and the lake breeze rather than air conditioning units. Only the deluxe cottage features a fully air-conditioned bedroom to manage the tropical humidity of the Kisumu region.

Is the resort suitable for professional meetings?

The property features conference facilities capable of hosting up to 400 guests for seminars or weddings. These venues are separate from the main accommodation area to ensure that business events do not disturb the quiet atmosphere of the residential tents.

What are the standard check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is typically processed after 14:00 while check-out must be completed by 12:00 to allow the housekeeping staff to prepare the tents. Some flexibility may be available during the low season if you contact the management in advance.

This place has seriously deteriorated. I remember visiting here in 2015 & 16. Now in 2025 what has happened? Walked in with no greeting from staff, in fact one member of staff were on their phone. It took over 10 minutes to get a drink from the point of ordering and wait for it....50 minutes for a plate of chips.....we had to request for salt etc. Waitress that served us was friendly.

Great beach front, with amazing views of the lake and zenith, especially early mornings and late sunsets. The sounds of birds and views of fishermen resting on their boats and casting their nets is breathtaking as much as it's calming. Great place for family time when busy but also great for solitude and calmness.
