The 5-Day Marangu Route is one of the most popular routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route offering overnight accommodation in mountain huts rather than tents.
The route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeast and takes you through beautiful rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the spectacular high-altitude environment surrounding the summit.
Although the 5-day itinerary is relatively short, it is physically demanding because it provides less time for acclimatization. Good preparation, a steady walking pace, hydration, and following your guide’s instructions are essential.

Day 1: Marangu gate – Mandara hut
Altitude: 1,860 m → 2,720 m
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Itinerary
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate, the entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park.
After completing registration and park formalities, you will meet your mountain crew and begin your hike through the beautiful montane rainforest.
The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation, towering trees, ferns, and abundant birdlife. You may also have the opportunity to spot monkeys along the trail.
The hike is relatively gradual, allowing you to settle into a comfortable walking rhythm. Your guide will encourage you to walk slowly — “pole pole” — which is an important part of acclimatization.
After several hours of hiking, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, where you will check into your mountain accommodation.
The evening is spent relaxing, enjoying dinner, and preparing for the following day's hike.

Day 2: Mandara hut – Horombo hut
Altitude: 2,720 m → 3,720 m
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Itinerary
After breakfast, you leave Mandara Hut and continue your ascent toward Horombo Hut.
The trail gradually leaves the rainforest behind and enters the moorland zone, where the vegetation becomes more open. Giant heathers, grasses, and distinctive Kilimanjaro plants begin to dominate the landscape.
As you climb higher, the views become increasingly impressive. Depending on weather conditions, you may catch your first clear views of Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak, two of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones.
You will continue walking at a slow and steady pace, taking regular breaks for water and rest.
After approximately 5–7 hours, you reach Horombo Hut, located at around 3,720 meters.
Enjoy dinner and rest at the hut while your guide briefs you about the next stage of the climb.

Day 3: Horombo hut – Kibo hut
Altitude: 3,720 m → 4,703 m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Itinerary
Wake up early, have breakfast, and begin the day's hike toward Kibo Hut, your final overnight stop before the summit.
The landscape changes dramatically as you leave the moorland behind and enter Kilimanjaro's alpine desert zone.
The trail crosses the broad Saddle, a high-altitude desert-like area situated between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you approach Kibo.
The day's hike is steady rather than technically difficult, but the increasing altitude makes walking more challenging. Your guide will maintain a slow pace and monitor everyone for signs of altitude sickness.
Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you will have an early dinner and prepare your summit equipment.
Because the summit attempt begins around midnight, you should go to sleep as early as possible.
Your guide will explain the summit schedule, clothing requirements, hydration strategy, and safety procedures before you rest.

SUMMIT DAY
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
You will wake around midnight, have a light breakfast, and begin the summit ascent in darkness.
With your headlamp on, you start climbing slowly toward Gilman's Point.
The trail consists largely of steep rocky terrain and scree. The altitude makes every step more demanding, so your guide will maintain a very slow and controlled pace.
The goal is to reach the crater rim around sunrise.
Gilman's Point – 5,681 m
After several hours of climbing, you reach Gilman's Point, located at approximately 5,681 meters above sea level.
From here, the trail continues along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
Continue around the crater rim toward the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro — Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 meters.
Standing at the summit of Africa is an unforgettable experience. Take photographs, celebrate your achievement, and enjoy the incredible views when weather conditions allow.
Your guide will ensure that the summit stay is kept reasonably brief because of the extreme altitude.
Descent to Horombo Hut
After reaching the summit, begin your descent.
You return along the trail toward Kibo Hut, where you take a short rest before continuing down toward Horombo Hut.
The descent is much faster than the ascent, although you will likely feel tired after the long summit day.
Arrive at Horombo Hut, enjoy dinner, and get some well-deserved rest.

Distance: Approximately 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Itinerary
After breakfast, begin your final descent from Horombo Hut.
The trail takes you through the moorland before returning to the lush rainforest encountered on the first day.
As you descend, the air becomes warmer and oxygen levels increase, making the walk progressively easier.
Continue toward Marangu Gate, where you officially complete your Kilimanjaro trek.
At the gate, you will complete the necessary exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate if you successfully reached the designated summit point.
